Best device for Coreelec in 2024

Do not understand your question?

Merged from cpm thread?

The X96X10 PRO S928X-J 8/64 CoreELEC Dolby Vision FEL 7 is converted to profile 8.1

Maybe that answers your question

Playback is fine

Only the base layer is converted. The enhancement layer is lost. This is why the s922 chipsets are so coveted.

Yes
This is known

From post by Portisch looks like odds are 0 %percent FEL DOLBY VISION in the future SoC
Going forward.

Iam spoiled
Have Ugoos Am6b Plus and the
X96 X10 PRO

A post was split to a new topic: Dolby Vision, FEL/MEL Discuss

Yeah and this is why none of the future chipsets remotely interest me. I need something which plays my UHD collection correctly. The 928 simply does not.

Getting back on topic, it strikes me that the headline of this thread is too general. Defining what the best box is for coreelec largely depends on your use case. If you use it for streaming from dodgy sites, your ‘best box’ is likely to differ from those that use it solely to play UHD remuxes. If your TV supports Dolby vision your best box will differ from someone who’s tv does not.

I use it solely to play my ripped ultra hd collection to my Oled, so in my case the best box is clearly the Ugoos AM6B+ (or one of the other boxes based on the 922 chip). There isn’t really anything else worth considering simply because they don’t accurately play back many of my rips. I use coreelec solely because I can use it to play P7 FEL (along with the rest of my collection). I was actually about to buy a shield pro until I found out about the AM6B+ and coreelec.

Agree with that. The Am6b+ is the only alternative for me for the same reasons.

And you dodged a bullet with the Shield Pro. It really struggles with 4K remuxes, especially high bitrate DV ones. At least mine constantly crashes Kodi or buffers or stutters a lot. Can’t thank the developers of CE enough for being able to display my remuxes in all their glory on the Am6b+.

It’s not just you. My Shield Pro constantly choked and stuttered on 4K remux, almost to the point of needing a restart before playing any 4k remux content.

I think it is a memory leak because when stutters on 4k remux happened, even browsing the Android homepage would be extremely slow/laggy.

Now that it seems that we’ll never have FEL in a post 4.9 kernel, I hope the CE team will consider supporting NG for longer.

That’s an ongoing discussion and nothing is definitive. Things change in a heartbeat, probably a few weeks ago the answer could be yes, right now I truly think that NG will finally end with ce-21.

I hope, its not.

But when the omega will be the final for NG, we need/can use that for years.

Yes, right now it looks like NG ends with CE-21.
The old kernel is not compatible anymore with new sources and do require more and more work around. So it will require a freeze of current system sources what equal a end with CE-21.

But as you said already Omega is still not final and it will take years until it gets EOL.

It really comes down to the Users Need

This last year with CoreELEC and 4.9 kernel advancement Dolby Vision!!!
And dont forget 3D Working also!!!
Unreal!!!

Not many would even thnk about the Ugoos 922x-j and other 922x-j.

We have Samsungs TV’S in Family Room
So i need the Ugoos and CoreELEC/cpm build.

On the TCL TV for Dolby Vision playback we use the X96X10 PRO S928X-J (needed a replacement for the Kinhank G1)

This Hobby is addictive
Can never have to many Boxes !!!

I’ve been waiting to see what was happening with fel for a while now,I had hope with s928x but thats now gone,I can’t decide between the ugoos amb6 or X96x10 so I’ve ijst been using my odroid n2,ive nearly ordered the amb6 a few time but it’s the future support for the box that’s stopped me,how long will omega last?

I don’t stress about future support really. My am6b+ plays everything I need it to now. I don’t see the format of UHD releases changing. If you buy a UHD player (disc based) it’s very rarely updated. It just does what it does.

The last few nightlies have actually broken FEL playback so I’m using a release from the beginning of October. I don’t intend to update from that. I don’t need anything more from Kodi so no need for me to update. I actually think Kodi tries to do too much (for my needs). This makes it cumbersome and prone to being broken by constant updates. I bought the AM6B+ to play my local media and it does this perfectly. What is there to update?

This has been my question as well.Technically CE NG does it and the cpm build caters to others already and does what they want.So why pressure developers to update a older platform hampering development.Bug fixes can be worked on given logs can be provided but what more people want beyond this has puzzled me

It’s just different people use coreelec for different reasons.

I guess people who are wanting a high quality media player find it difficult to understand why support would pivot to devices which cannot playback a fairly large amount of Dolby Vision movies. For people who use coreelec as a high quality media player for their Dolby Vision TVs the newer devices are simply incapable and (in their eyes) not really worth supporting. They wouldn’t dream of purchasing any of these devices any more than someone would consider buying an Ultra HD disc player which is incompatible with a big chunk of the available library.

Personally I don’t care though. I don’t have any use for coreelec beyond what it already does for me. So the developers can bash on and develop it however they see fit (that’s always been their right tbf!). I appreciate that there are plenty of people who use kodi for ‘other’ purposes and plenty who don’t have a Dolby Vision TV.

It’s a bit funny though how lots of those wanting “high quality media” have to be told what they’re seeing.

if you can go back after seeing the difference between the kinhank and the X96X10 PRO S928X-J, what would you pick. would you have paid the extra for the X96X10 PRO S928X-J from the beginning or kept the kinhank g1?

this is starting to remind me of people who collect games consoles over the years. In the future (10 years from now) when fel media stops being made, you’d have a box that could play the older fel

yeap, that’s probably the case for most of the user base that uses media boxes specifically for FEL. 4K remuxes with FEL will/should be the best quality available for a lot of movies for a looong time, basically until (or if ever) new media standard replaces it (then the cycle starts again)).
