Best device for Coreelec in 2025

Same here. Don’t care for any future Kodi updates for AM6B+, same as I don’t care about future updates for my Sony UBP-X700. They both play everything I need and will keep on doing this until they release white smoke

Not sure what you mean by that? The difference between FEL playing back correctly and not can be pretty stark in some cases.

If i could time travel
I would not have clicked on firmware update in Kinhank G1
And would be using custom firmware.

Never would have purchased X96 X10 Pro

I have the “Dune Homatics Box R 4K plus” with S905X4-K processor, not the S905X4-J.
For the version with S905X4-K i must say, that it unfortunately doesn’t work very well with CoreElec.
I don’t know and therefore can’t say wether the “K”, or “J” version makes a big difference

This are the issues i have with my Dune and CoreElec:

Good thing first: TV box boots up fine, Kodi shows up as expected.
But when i start a 3D Movie (regardless if it is from an ISO or a backup directory created by MakeMKV) it plays OK only for a few minutes.
Then playback stops and the Box freezes. Leaving me behind with a totally disturbed image in multiple colours.
Or sometimes the image disappears and leaves a black screen while the movie is still running (you can tell by the scroll bar and the audio).

Also when the movie is still being played back it stutters.
And I can’t get rid of the Soap Opera effect although I set Dune’s output to 24 frames and also the TV’s input to Cinema mode.
The issue with stuttering and Soap effect also happen when watching 2D videos in CoreElec.
Also scrolling forth and back might cause CoreElec to freeze.

And finally BluRay menus don’t work although I’ve installed the BD-menu addon from the repository.

Which version of CE are you running? CE-21-NE or CE-21-NG?

If you don’t require DV P7 FEL support, try the NE version.

Also, try a nightly instead of stable if you didn’t already do that.

And how is your box connected to the network? Ethernet or WiFi? And did you perform a speed test?

i tried
CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-20.5-Nexus-Generic.img.gz
CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-21.1.1-Omega-Generic.img.gz
CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-22.0-Piers_nightly_20241024-Generic.img.gz
CoreELEC-Amlogic-ng.arm-9.2.8-Generic.img.gz
if my memory serves well the last in the list didn’t work at all.

the box was connected via wifi but i don’t think that this is what causes the problems.
I tried to watch the movies from a decent USB HDD. (WD Elements 18TB)
And also tried a USB3 memory stick.

On the other hand when starting the Box not with CoreElec but from its native system everything plays and works fine.
But of course only with 2D movie ISOs or MakeMKV movie folders.
No stuttering, no freezing when using the scroll bar, disc menus show up.
Streaming from Prime video or Netflix works fine too.
But since the main purpose of the Box is for watching 3d movies it is of very little to no relevance to me whether the native system works fine with 2D.

I would try the latest NE Omega nightly instead of Piers.

Or like I said, if you require DV P7 FEL, the latest NG Omega nightly + appropriate dovi.ko file.

thanks,
so the latest NE omega would be:
CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-21.1.1-Omega_nightly_20241105-Generic.img.gz
is that correct?

PS: should i take “sc2_s905x4_sei_smb_280.dtb” or “sc2_s905x4_4g_1gbit.dtb” for generic devices from the device trees’ folder?

I always installed “sc2_s905x4_sei_smb_280.dtb” till now

well, nevermind.
I just tried both files.
Both give me the same problems like described.
Unless somebody doesn’t come up with a solution within the next 3 or 4 days i shall send the device back and try to find one that really works

Yes and yes

20241105 is the latest nightly and SEI is correct, I use that one too on my Dune Homatics 4K (albeit the NG version).

ok, then i might give it a last shot with the NG version…

What’s so bad about the x96 x10? I was thinking of buying this box

update:
i tried the NG version.
This seems to be significantly better in regards of stuttering during playback.
But it’s still very unstable.
Scrolling can cause freezing or even crashing and restarting CoreElec.
And disk menus also don’t work. (just to be clear: the BD-menu addon is of course installed)

A post was merged into an existing topic: Nightly builds (NEW)

Nothing is bad
Box is Excellent

What are you referring to?

I am a little bit confused on FEL supports on S905x4. I know S905x4 supports FEL playback on CE-ng. S905x4 also gets dovi.ko for CE-ne and will get dovi.ko for CE-no. However, it is not clear to me if S905x4 supports FEL playback on CE-ne and/or CE-no?

it only supports FEL on NG.

The only kernel where FEL support is possible at the moment is ng. So the support for all the other kernels is not on the table due to Dolby licencing limitations, or more directly speaking, they don’t want to.

Thank you! Then, probably CE team could consider support ng longer since FEL can only be play back on ng at the moment.

I would kinda understand this if AM6B+ wasn’t in production anymore or if new boxes brought so much more to the table as being a no brainer.

As things are, respectfully, I don’t understand what it’s being chased in wanting to devote resources to less capable boxes, to the detriment of more capable ones.
Performance is not night and day, it’s always 7nm production process. AV1 is even less relevant than FEL is, as far as I can tell, even after investigating it.

I am not a developer, only thing I can do is donate (but you don’t accept donations unless I’m mistaken, kinda new to CE).
When I got into CE after S922J became THE wonderbox, the last thing I was expecting was support for it to be dropped.

I know I probably sound like whining but it’s just I keep on failing to see the logic in all this.

In any case, really, thanks for the time and effort you all invest and have invested in making CE a reality.
