Can you confirm if the hd44780.so provided by CoreELEC 8.99.1.1. and LibreELEC 9.0 include the latest compiled hd44780.so driver?

No, unfortuntely support for a lot of new displays (VFD, OLED) is missing. At least this was the status a couple of months ago when I’ve opened a similar thread.
