FireTV 3rd gen Cube - SoC T7 POP1-G (A311D2 variant)

I read somewhere that the Fire TV Cube gen3 supports 5.1.2 audio with the stock software. Does anyone know if CoreELEC can handle 7.1.4 audio on the Cube?

3rd gen Cube just went back on sale for $90. There’s no new firmware from Amazon blocking the unlock yet, it’s a good time to buy.

Yes in CE, you get full passthrough so 7.1.4 is possible as far as I’m aware.

I answered this question on XDA but to reiterate here, that’s only a concern in Fire OS where DD+ Atmos is decoded to Dolby MAT. CoreELEC passes that format through so nothing is altered.

On Amazon.it it is 109 €

Is it worth getting the amazon fire tv cube if I have the mecool km2 plus, or should I go for the homatics box r 4k plus? The Hometics Box R 4 K Plus is around £30 more expensive but only supports microSD installation of CoreElec

Personally I prefer using the 3rd gen Cube over the s905x4 SEI boxes (but I’m biased). On the Android/FireOS side the Cube is noticeably smoother in navigation, apps and streams load a little faster. Alexa is a much better assistant than Google Assistant, and she’s hands free. Most complaints about FireOS don’t apply to a rooted device.

On the CE side again the Cube is going to be a little noticeably smoother. Maybe less dramatic than the Android/FireOS side? With the Cube you can either do full eMMC or USB installs, and bootup is much more customizable. Choose which OS to boot to, whether USB devices supersede FireOS/CE, use the same BT remote between FireOS and CE, overclock if you want, etc.

The biggest advantages of the s905x4 SEI boxes is USB3 and 4GB RAM. It does have Gbit Ethernet, but the importance of this over WiFi5/6/E and USB2+Gbit Ethernet is highly over-exaggerated. If you have a huge video library the extra RAM is more important. If you are USB booting CE, USB3 is more important.

The Cube 3 is currently $89.99. Do you think the price will drop even further on the 6th?

I don’t think so. Amazon normally discounts all their devices a week ahead of their Prime Day sales, prices don’t go any lower during the actual Prime Days.

I am getting ~585Mbps on Wi-Fi 6e in CoreELEC with this device now. GUI performance with my library is lightning fast. Over the weekend, I picked up a second from Amazon with trade in of an 8 year old 4K fire stick that barely worked for $57 + tax. In terms of bang for your buck for CoreELEC + certified streamer, this device is a no brainer.

Hi there, is there any stuttering when playing UHD Remux files due to the 2 GB of RAM?

No. CoreELEC is very efficient. 2GB is plenty.

I’ve been using the am6b+ for a while, with my Harmony remote, everything works perfectly. I’m now trying this on my Cube and I like the performance but the power options are killing me. If I shut it down or just suspend it, the only way to turning it back on is manually, by pressing the button on the device, nothing happens with the Harmony, neither with the original Fire Tv Cube remote. I’ve used the patch on the Fire Cube Toolbox but no luck there either. What am I doing wrong? Any help will be much appreciated.

Wakeup requires using one of the predefined IR codes in the bootloader. Option 1) program your harmony remote with any of these 6 NEC IR codes:
0xef10fe01, 0xf20dfe01, 0xba45bd02, 0x3ac5bd02, 0xef10fb04, 0xe51afb04

Or Option 2) boot FireOS, and through ADB copy & paste this as one command:

echo 899s449s63s165s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s168s60s165s60s168s60s168s60s168s60s165s60s168s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s168s60s55s60s55s60s55s60s168s60s168s60s168s60s168s60s55s60s168s60s168s60s168s60s3947s899s226s60s > /sys/class/irblaster/irblaster0/send

The Cube will emit 0xef10fe01 with it’s IR blasters, for your Harmony remote to learn.

With the stock Fire Remote, the POWER/VOLUMEUP/VOLUMEDOWN/MUTE buttons can all be manually programmed for any IR code you want. Follow this guide to program them including setting any of those buttons to 0xef10fe01.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. Teaching the stock Fire remote worked 100%, quite easy. The Harmony options, both, didn’t work, unfortunately. The cube emitted the codes, Harmony saved them but when pressing those IR commands nothing would happen. :sob:

In case it helps programming, 0xef10fb04 can be broken down into the command and address.

NEC
Address: 04FB
Command: 10EF

Also IR poweron only works from a CE shutdown and suspend, not a FireOS shutdown. Install the wake_from_poweroff.zip (magisk module) to enable IR wake from FireOS shutdown.

Test and try yourself.

You can’t hurt anything/ you’re not going to brick the Cube.

Hi, is it possible to use a USB hub on this Cube 3 port? Would it work well for connecting two external hard drives? I’m looking to buy an Acasis USB hub, but I don’t know if it will work.

@YadaYada Thank you once again, I’m mainly interested in the Coreelec side of it. I hope someone with an Harmony can chime in and, in the meantime I’ll try whatever I can to make it work. I really can’t part ways with my beloved Harmony!

@GILIARD I don’t see why not. I’ve connected a TP-Link usb hub to overcome the 100mb ethernet port, like this I get around 400mb. Didn’t try the three usb ports from the hub, as I share my files elsewhere within my network.

Thanks, which TP-Link model do you use?
