AM6b+ Blu ray ISO Menu & 4k Playback Issues

Hello, I was hoping to get some help. Maybe I’m missing a setting or another plugin to try out. I just want to stream ISOs to kodi, have functional menus and to play 4k Dolby Vision. I followed the guide and installed CoreELEC, Blu ray menu java plugin as well as go through the settings. Increase cache and chunk size to max. I have a NAS running TrueNAS, I use NFSv3 (heard v4 is buggy, also noticed no difference when I tried it) since it seems to be quicker (quicker navigating on kodi and loading movie, SMB loads on everything). I’m using the original remote, have to use mouse function for some movies. The specs of my NAS should be fine, I also watched to see if there was too heavy of a load on my server but I have 8gb ram free and cpu usage stays about 2% so I doubt the issue is my nas. I’m just trying to stream not transcode or anything.

For my Blu ray menu issues, its spotty and I notice a trend with certain brands being consistently a problem. Regular blu ray menus mostly work with some inconveniences.
-Eureka and Powerhouse Indicator releases, when I play anything from the menu I completely lose control (no UI, cant pause,rw,ff) and have to back out and restart the menu to watch different special features. Cant pause/play/rw/ff movie.
-Error4444 and some Shout Factory (Big Trouble in Little China works Perfectly, not Space Truckers though) releases (i think there were other companies, forgot to take note), I cant bring up the UI unless I use the original remote and use the Mouse function to double click (or quadruple), which the ui comes up and I’m able to use remote buttons to select what I need.
-Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke, as well as All Vinegar Syndrome Partner label movies I have tried all have the menu show up in the intro before its actually loaded. This also happens with some 4k menus (Ghostbusters). This is probably more cosmetic issue since everything else works.

-4K Menus and playback (will talk about later) basically don’t work. Some more mainstream releases work fine except for HDR making the menu darker than it should be such as Who framed roger rabbit and Ghostbusters.
-Criterions Princess Bride 4K kind of works, buggy and slow, but the adventures of baron munchausen 4K don’t work at all.
-The Fifth Element 4K Studio Canal Region B release doesn’t work. I can boot up the menu and its functional, just dark from HDR, but the movie wont play at all even if I try to play the movie directly instead of going through the menu. But Cutthroat Island from Studio Canal Region B menu works and movie plays both through menu and directly, but typical 4k playback issues (will discuss later below).
-Escape from New York 4k Shout Factory, when I get to menu its a black screen but I can hear the music and can select play movie. Movie plays but cant FF/RW or skip chapters because audio will go out of sync.
-Eureka menus work, but same with regular blu ray, I lose all control when I watch movie or special effects.
-Some Vinegar Syndrome 4Ks work, China OBrien, where as other like Freeway can play if I play directly but through the menu the movie has no audio. Also some visual artifacts of chunks of colorful blocks appearing at the beginning of VS logo intro and when movie starts.

All 4k movies are basically unwatchable for me. Very few work perfectly (maybe 4) except for the menu being darker than it should. Most of the time whether I can get it to play through the menu or if I directly play the movie, it plays but I am unable to pause,FF,RW or skip chapter because audio will go out of sync. There is also a lot of stuttering and speed ups as if some hit FF for a second. Finally I have tried a couple 4k movies listed above as BDMV but have same issues.

I’ve had a few issues. It’s actually best if you don’t try to access the blu-ray menu directly. Instead use Kodi Simplified to access the real blu-ray menu. It’s still not perfect and I have a couple movies where the menu still doesn’t work. But almost all the ones that didn’t play when accessed directly, are now working the real blu-ray menu is accessed from the simplified menu first.

Blu-ray ISO especially menu is really buggy in Kodi as there is only CE with DV support. So someone needs to invest a lot of time to get it working properly…

I sold by my first device because it didn’t handle menus. The latest Dune devices always have to be connected to the Internet. This has been the best device so far but I’m a little worried about further development.

But in the mean time, is it better to use BDMV over ISO?

Thats too bad. Figured there would be better menu support since its the only device other than an chinoppo that can play DVFEL7. Thanks for the help

I don’t think it matters. I use ISO and tested BDMV. It was the same. Maybe a little bit easier to open an ISO. If you want to watch 4K it has to be on local hard drive or on USB drive. Cant stream from NAS, too many issues.

I have heard that about dune. Hopefully the new Zidoo 8k boxes are better.

I don’t think NAS streaming has ever been an issue for me, but I will try a problem blu-ray from a local drive and see.

If you’re referring to the S928x-j you’ll get “awesome” menus and no FEL. So many have to chose between menus and the video itself.

Why can’t the menu’s be replicated on the AM6b+?

This is totally untrue. Many users here stream from NAS with absolutely zero issue on 4K remuxes.

It’s important to remember that there is no reason why support cannot improve in the future.

But that’s not what @Vasco is implying which is why I asked the question.

This has been a Kodi issue for ages. There was some progress and more menus work as they should. But still lots of complaints so we can’t make any prediction as it’s not only up to CE.

Any Kodi box will have the same menu support. If you buy a Dune or Zidoo S928X box, their software might have better menu support, but you will never have support for FEL or multi-channel LPCM.

But why did you write above “If you’re referring to the S928x-j you’ll get “awesome” menus and no FEL” ?

Is the S928X-J better at BD menus than the S922X-J in CE?

Your are correct by the way that it’s mostly a Kodi issue and not a CE issue. BD-J menus and the incorporation of JRE and libbluray in Kodi is “experimental” at best

I tried the new beta version of the Dune HD app under Android on the Dune Homatics 4K Plus and menus seem to work a lot better now. The latest beta also adds BDMV/ISO support over network shares. But unfortunately no full Profile 7 FEL suppport of course.

It’s obviously better in handling menus, but since there is no FEL, the decision is yours; do you need better menus, or FEL?

The question is “why” is it better in handling menus.

Like @Enet said, why is it better?

Is it just because single-threaded performance of the CPU is better? I would assume that the the code base for handling BD-J menus is the same for all CE versions?

Because if the Zidoo mention. That’s it.

jumping in on this thread in case anyone can help. I have a test disc which I have to navigate via the menus. On the Ugoos I am using the OS MC remote/USB dongle as my remote and it works perfectly for Kodi. I have opened the menu of my full-disc backup but it’s not responding to the remote. Grateful if anyone can point me to a potential solution.
