Any way to speed up listing of a samba folder?

I’m using an X96 X10 S928X and it’s accessing a NAS using samba.

I have a music folder with 1,500 files and folders.

The content of the source is set to “None” as I don’t want to use the database as most of them are not tagged properly. I’m happy with just a big list of folders.

The problem is that Kodi is quite slow to list the files, it takes maybe 20 seconds to fetch the list.

My windows PC can list the same folder in a second or less.

I don’t think it’s a network issue as I’ve tested using iperf and it’s 500Mbps on the wifi.

It’s the same for video folders as well.

Is there anything I can do to speed it up, or am I just expecting too much from this little box?

Have you tested this trick of mounting the SMB shares to a local folder?

My music share(NAS) contains 179,858 files and 7,225 folders using NFS mount.
My device is a odroid N2 wired network 1Gb.
NAS = Netgear RN104

Opening folders with more than one hundred files inside takes a few seconds. Opening album folders containing up to 20 files is quick - takes just a second

I mean it’s literally one single folder that contains 1500 album subfolders.

How long do you think that would take your device to open?

Maybe you just need to organize your folders a little better.

I have a main folder “music” which is mounted via NFS mount.
There are some subfolders like mp3, flac, hires etc.
Subfolders containing other subfolders/albumfolders

Open any folder is very quick, only folders containing files need some time.
Folders containing up to 20 files = 1 second
Folders containing up to 100 files = a few seconds

My folder “mp3” contains 4.425 subfolders, containing 88.687 files.
Top100charts folders need 3 seconds to open
Album folders need 1 second

I don´t have folders containing more than 100 files

So, NFS was the answer.

Moved to NFS instead of smb, and now even the largest folders open in about a second.

Damn, I missed this post.

I might try it out later on just to see if it is any faster that way.

But NFS is definitely fast enough.
