AV1 decode on S905x4 - Amlogic-ng and Amlogic-no

I see a lot of posts regarding Dolby Vision and video ucode versions. I don’t have any Dolby Vision or HDR videos - only SDR videos. I have two S905x4 boxes with HEVC, x264 and AV1 videos. (HEVC and x264 videos playback perfectly using hardware decoding on both boxes).
One box has video ucode of 3.49 and plays back AV1 SDR videos using hardware decoding on both amlogic-no and amlogic-ng perfectly.
The second S905x4 box from a different manufacturer has video ucode of 3.33. AV1 plays back using hardware decoding on amlogic-ng but only audio playback occurs on amlogic-no.
Is this normal? Seems that AV1 SDR videos should playback correctly with hardware decoding on amlogic-no regardless of video ucode version. It plays back perfectly on both boxes if using amlogic-ng. Is this a problem purely because of the change in amlogic kernel from 4.9 to 5.15? Thx

PS. This is only a question. I’m not concerned about the lack of AV1 playback on the 3.33 ucode box. Just wanted to know the reason why if possible. TIA

Firmware and software needs to be in sync.
Newer software need newer firmware.
Minimum 4.1 is best for CE-NO.

Ask your vendor for a firmware update.

For AV1 at least, the ucode version cutoff is somewhere between 3.43 and 3.49. 3.49 works, 3.43 doesn’t (CE-NO).

In case there is an Android firmware with ucode 3.49 available for you, and your vendor has no plans of updating farther.

Can I ask you to tell names of the S905X4 boxes that you have indicating their ucode, please? This will help people including me to buy something more useful. Thank you.

I have a TOX3 that has ucode 3.49 and plays AV1 with hardware decoding perfectly.

Actually, I also have a G7 MAX S905x4 device that is on ucode version 3.33, and that plays AV1 10-bit videos perfectly with hardware decoding on. These are all SDR videos 1080p. Running CE 21 Amlogic-ng.

Try the same in NO…

Doesn’t run on 22-NO. I think for that kernel (5.15) you have to have ucode of 3.49 or higher for AV1 hardware decode. Still, I’m very happy with 21-NG where it runs perfectly.
