Best device for Coreelec in 2022/2023

Agree only 4 months left in this year
Which has been Best Device/ Machine for you in 2022/23 ?

Happy Testing

We will see what kernel 5.15 does bring. AML does say it support G12B and SM1 as well, untested.

Also right now there show up S5, S928X(-J) on the marketā€¦

As you I was also looking for a replacement for my old X96Air (s905x3).

I tested the new beelink gt king II (A311D2).
Very fast and good but does not support HBR audio yet and no Dolby Vision.

Since I have no need for Dolby Vision but I do have for Dolby Atmos and HD audio codecs with HBR I decided to try a ToX3 (s905x4) and it works great. Faster than old x96 but slower than beelink but with all support I need. And I can use my hd-ma and true-hd audio and Atmos

First of all thank you very much CoreELEC team. I installed your OS on a Banana Pi M5 some time ago and everything works charming out of the box, really great stuff. Also the documentation how to perform the installation is very useful.

Regarding the topic, for me the Banana Pi M5 is one of the best models in Mid 2023 to buy for CoreELEC and those are my reasons:

  • You can actually just buy it and get it in under a weekā€¦
  • Price point <90ā‚¬ but still with GbE, USB3 and 4k decoding
  • Itā€™s an development board, there is no vendor lock or situations you canā€™t escape
  • Supports many other scenarios as well once not needed as HTPC anymore

Before I had a Nexbox and stopped counting the hours I spend to get LibreELEC running, searching the forum for new (of course unsupported) firmware or translating Chinese websites to find a newer Android firmware. So happy I found and bought an alternative and that CoreELEC existsā€¦

Was tempted myself today as amazon uk has the dune in stock, but ive waited this long so il jst wait for the ugoos am8 and id imagine odroid are atleast in the design stage for the S928x soc

Hello, you can buy, because Tencent 5x is also a 928x chip, it seems that the Tencent team and coreelec team cooperate to adapt.
@Hash70

A post was merged into an existing topic: Amlogic S928X

Iā€™m looking for a new device to run CoreELEC on.
Any advice is highly appreciated!

Requirements (no particular order):

  • bluetooth or wifi remote controler (no IR)
  • 4K
  • fully supported by CoreELEC
  • Amlogic-NE (preferably)
  • price range around 100 euro
  • available to buy

There are 200 posts above you answering that. Itā€™s all subjective.

Iā€™m thinking of buying ugoos x4q extra, I have a question can coreelec be installed?

For the same price, buy a Homatics instead and it will be good for streaming too.

Box no good then?

The device is very nice, I have one. CoreELEC is running well with no major setbacks. The Android kernel is not the same as ours so youā€™ll need someone to pass you the dovi.ko module so DV works in CE.
It always comes to what use case you have. The homatics has all the licences in Android for the streaming apps, for personal library use theyā€™re similar. The Ugoos has a nice large storage.

Thanks for the great information Iā€™ve already ordered the device will ugoos work with coreelec

Hello, I saw support for DV shipped for Homatics box, rocktek g2ā€¦
Do those boards support HDR10+ ?
Which one should I choose ? Rocktek g2 seems pretty good.
Thank you !

Rocktek G2 is Amlogic device similar to Homatics and Dune

I am happy with the Rocktek G2, it doesnā€™t have an IR but I use an USB HID remote with CE leaving BT for Android. From the four similar S905X4-J DV devices price is pretty important distinction and the G2 is often available on sale with free shipping in the US (right now $110 USD).

I just purchased x4q extra can coreelec be installed and will dolby vision work as the chip is S905X4-J

You had your answer here. The answer is yes to both if you can reach someone that provides the dovi.ko module for the 5.4.210 kernel (like the one found in homatics)
