Any DV licensed Amlogic device running CE-NG can play DV FEL (s922x/z, s905x2, s905y2, s905x3, s905x4, likely several others). The AM6+ is not unique in this regard.
One could argue that the Minix U22XJ Max is better than the AM6B+ since it matches all the specs, AND has an unencrypted bootloader.
One could argue that any of the s905x4 boxes are the best because they can play DV FEL, and also have AV1 HW decoding.
Aw ok. I didnât realise. What does the unencrypted bootloader add? AV1 isnât really relevant to me. I just play lossless rips. Thereâs no need for me to use it.
I have an Apple TV which I use for any other streaming use. Itâs very slick and capable. My Ugoos is solely my Plex client for movie playing only but Iâm more than happy to pay out if thereâs something better for my use case.
These SOCs use video HW decoding, Plex video playback of bluray rips isnât a challenge for any of these boxes.
CE is a minimal OS with low hardware requirements. The s922x/z is significantly faster than the s905x4. However, in use under CE, the difference is not that noticeable.
An unencrypted bootloader allows use of the bl301 injection tool. Itâs a marginal difference, like many of the differences between all these boxes.
Apparently all hopes are finished for the S928X-J, Minix team could not get FEL to work, they finished by going down to HDR:
" Patching FEL Dolby Vision support (requested by some of you before, we seriously fight for this) - DONE, FEL will be played as HDR"
" Here is an update of our work in progress of the 002 firmware:
1.) Adding Auto Refresh Rate Switching module (new users may not realize that MINIX invented this feature on Android boxes) DONE
2.) Auto frame buffer switching (19201080 for resolution within 1080p60Hz, and 38402160 for resolution of 4K or above, this is a new feature targeting enhanced app compatibility) DONE
3.) Disney+ app compatibility (itâs a Disney+ app bug but we shall make it compatible, now it can be signed in using a smartphone within the same network, but its âLog-inâ tab is buggy, haunted by a wrong DPI preset) Cancelled, to fix this appâs flaw would cause many other problems
4.) More advanced HDMI-CEC features DONE
5.) Better remote support in the advanced settings interface (tablet settings interface, not frequently used, but we shall make it better) DONE
6.) Improved Settings description (fixing some spelling mistakes, e.g. passthrough, and adding a few new settings options, etc) DONE
7.) Patching FEL Dolby Vision support (requested by some of you before, we seriously fight for this) DONE, FEL will be played as HDR
8.) Improved AI-PQ/AI-SR demo mode, added a green line for easy visualization of AI mastering/upscaling DONE
9.) Adding âClose allâ running apps tab in the app drawer interface WIP
10.) Split-screen function (need airmouse/mouse to adjust the screen sizes) WIP
11.) Kodi mouse/airmouse focusing issue (it works fine with remote navigation in the current build) DONE
12.) Kodi native passthrough option (no need to manually choose the 2nd passthrough option) DONE"
It depends - there are movies like Saving Private Ryan where discarding the FEL layer ruins the quality, and some movies where the FEL layer seems to contain most of the film grain look. But yes, there are cases where it doesnât necessarily offer that much.
Cheers, could then CoreELEC eventually work on Ugoos AM8/S928X-J as it does on AM6B+/S922X-J, including P7 FEL, real tv-led? Anyways, just to make sure, I have a minix u22-xj on the way to me. Thanks.
The unencrypted bootloader on the Minix boxes, thereâs two of them with the Amlogic S922XJ, the Minix U22XJ and the Minix U22XJ Max, allows you to, for example, have the usb ports always on or turn them off when you turn off the box.
