Best device for Coreelec in 2024

Hello everyone, I’ve come across this box sold by Walmart in the US called Onn 4K Pro which has the S905X4-J/K with DV capability.

Does anyone know if this box has an unlocked bootloader and can run CE? If not, will there be any other way for it to play DV FEL?

Basically, the answer is no, Onn devices are heavily locked down & region internet IP blocked boxes.

Are Tivo’s set-top boxes the same? I have a Tivo Stream 4K (S905Y2-J) and it can be booted using the s905y2_2g.dtb, but it can’t hardware decode videos. Do I need a specific dtb file to unlock the hardware decoder?

It looks like ST-DL P7 files were playing fine through Plex in Android itself back when it launched and it’s confirmed in this old community post: Dolby Vision FEL playback? | TiVo Community Forum

However, I’m not sure if this is still the case with the latest updates to this box. You can try digging deeper in that forum or maybe even try your luck by buying one.

Can anyone point me to the instructions for moving the data partition alone to the emmc as stated here?

Maybe this? Homatics Box R 4K Plus - #278 by vpeter

Right, thanks. Looks a bit complicated and easy to make a mistake. I might stick with a good SD card instead.

Please tell me, is Ugoos AM6+ which has no “B”, any worse than AMB6+? Of course I mean how it works with CoreELEC and Dolby Vision, not the android part.

It is same. B version have wifi 6, becasue this model is from 2021.

I read somewhere that AM6+ may have other SOC revisions, is it not important (for VC-1 software decoding, for example)?

S922X SOC revisions are unrelated to S905X4 SOC revisions. The VC-1/H264 issues in CE-NG (kernel 4.9) are specific to S905X4 rev d SOCs.

As far as I know, all DV licensed S922X/Z SOCs are rev b (no relation to S905X4 rev b).

Hi there !

I am planning on getting the cheapest hardware I can find (second hand, in France) to run CE on. I tried to look on the forums but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Please redirect me if such a thread already exists.

These are the kind of files I’ll be playing :

  • 4K HEVC 10bit HDR / DV (not playing on a DV compatible device, just tone-mapping)
  • 1080 3D
  • 5.1, atmos, DTS audio tracks

So my question is, what would be a good device for playing those files, for a decent price ?

I found an odroid-N2 (with emmc and psu) for 80€, seems reasonable to me. Wondering if this is fine, or maybe this board is lacking some features ?

TOX3 (not tox4)
example only.
