Best device for Coreelec in 2025 (and 2026)

He’s already got a 2nd gen Cube that can run CE, why spend more money buying another device for CE.

thanks for your reply @YadaYada , I just realised he might not be using CE for kodi on FC2, I wonder if he is able to because he’s had it for a while and might have updated it so unable to. But the kodi he’s using on FC2 seems to cause his system to crash. It has 2GB RAM and the movies might not be local (over 6000) . so maybe that is causing the issue. Hmm think more investigation is required. thanks

sorry just seen your reply, I know the SK1 is a beast so I’m sure its not going to cause an issue running CoreELEC. thanks for the link

he ended up getting the SK1 for $182 from Ali, which is a good deal. Can’t really go wrong, he doesn’t have DV (Samsung) so SK1 would be better than the AM6B+ in terms of speed , 4k GUI, and longer support from CoreELEC (ty) than the AM6B+. plus it’s newer from Ugoos which means you’ll get better android support to.

He said the FC3 crashes, but the FC2 doesn’t crash. Considering they both have the same amount of RAM and FireOS version, I doubt RAM is the problem anyway. This sounds like the same guy, who’s FC2 was already unlocked. He was looking for a way to keep using his Echo speakers with his FC3, buying a SK1 is about the most expensive way to do that.

he can get DV FEL on his Samsung TV which is widely known at this point but sure…better Android support? it will be stuck on Android 11, SK1 is money in the bin when AM6B+ can do much more haha.

Looks like iam to late to offer any input
He has gone with the SK1

I lean towards YadaYada reply
If no issues on FC2 and same Ram as FC3
Why add on ?

I do not test the Cube
Has some interesting features
E arc audio return to Cube

Could he have added the FC2 cube as HDMI input instead of buying new Box?

Evening all,

Just thought id chime in with a little bit of info.

Firstly, thank you for the advise you have been giving.

I did need advise in regards to which box was ‘better’

Also, in regards to my Crashes on FC3 and not the FC2, Yes, they both have similar specs, and identical RAM, but the OS in the FC3 uses more RAM when using the studios as a Surround Sound System, this is due to the fact it creates a unique local network amongst itself, as the FC2 uses the wireless router network, this uses significabtly more resource.

Yes, my FC2 is rooted with magnisk etc.

Since firecube 3 cannot run the CoreElec, and this is the CoreElec forum, and the Best device for CoreElec topic, your question irrelevant here,
about cube 2 vs cube 3.

Anyway, my answer : firecube 2 run lot better the CoreElec as the cube 3.

No i agree, there was questions in post above that mention it. So it was for clarity.

I have purchased the Sk1 anyway.

officially maybe but can get DV FEL playback on them if you know how.

Did a video tutorial on mounting network shares with CoreELEC as it provides better, solid local streaming performance (quicker library scans, playback start, just more stable connection). Hope it’s helpful to those interested if you’ve been adding shares using SMB/NFS addresses vs. mounting…

I find it quite distasteful to keep on discussing a box manufactured by a company CE devs have accused of stealing their code without compensation.

This is a very interesting approach. Is there a reason why performance should be better?

Is system (Linux) SMB access to shares more efficient than the one in Kodi? Otherwise I don’t see where the difference could be.

I expected as much, but there does seem to be a performance difference… I noticed quicker start playback of videos, and like I mentioned in the video, quicker library scans. Believe this mount method discussed in the OSMC forum, which is similar, has comments on why this is the case.

I actually did this a couple of weeks ago, and the performance is much better. It’s like night and day in my case.

I also used the automount feature described on the libreelec page. Since my share is on a PC, which is not online 24/7, it automounts the share again when it’s online.

Hi All,

I have read the post below about the best coreelec devices in 2025. However already have a Ugoos AM6B+ box in my main viewing room but I’m now looking for a second box. For this I need SDR only, no passthrough, no streaming apps.

Most of the devices listed in the best of 2025 thread are capable of Dolby Vision and FEL etc and command a price accordingly. Whereas my priority is smooth playback of mostly 1080p and frame rate matching (with my current box I have to change the resolution each time I was to play 25 fps footage) for local NAS stored files only. I’d also like something that feels snappy to navigate the UI and it needs to be compatible with a Harmony remote.

I found this post:

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252916

Which suggests the Odroid C4 or a Ugoos X3 Cube for SDR only. Ugoos seems to have been replaced now by the X4 and I can’t seem to find the Odroid C4. It also mentions the X96 Plus and I’ve found many on Aliexpress such as this:

Does anyone have the X96 Plus or the Ugoos X4 Cube? Anything worth knowing about the performance with Coreelec? Or any other boxes to consider?

Many thanks

Any device that can run CoreELEC should work fine for SDR.

Sometimes for a 2nd/3rd Box you can downgrade to something in the SM1
S905X3 SoC

This is also minimum SoC required for CoreELEC NO.

In Bedroom we have older Samsung 1080p SDR only TV
So we use older Tanix Tx5 Plus Deluxe S905X3 with latest nightly NO
Is Excellent Box!!!
Plays back everything/all media/not quite all obviously …
Can write to internal as Dual Boot
If you care about Android there is slimboxtv ATV 9

It is daily driver for us last 3 yrs minimum and compatible with New Order

Just something to think about
