It’s not really “closed” source. The firmware is available and also the drivers in source.
They are just not compatible with mainline. It’s too specific, hardware focused.
So it will stay forever to give only full support by vendor kernel.
The hardware was and will not mainline, it will ever be a vendor tree.
And Torvalds will never accept such “big” vendor specific changes.
But I heard in background it is worked on 6.12 vendor kernel already…
That’s disappointing if the VIM line goes Rockchip, there’s already the Khadas Edge SBC line for Rockchip. Amlogic SOC development has been too slow the last 5-8 years, Rockchip blew by them, so maybe not a complete surprise. Rockchip announced 2 new chips last summer, the RK3668 and RK3688. Maybe it’s based on one of those.
Just in terms of raw CPU power the S905X5 is ~40K DMIPS. The RK3668 is 200K DMIPS, and RK3688 300K DMIPS.
It’s not that surprising that AMLogic have slowed development. Their primary market is media players and their current chips are more than adequate for that function. Developing beyond what is needed is just wasted money.
Hi, I’m looking for a new device. It has to play DV (not FEL), HDR and support all audio formats as passthrough. As I understand the Homatics Box R 4K Plus should be the best choice to date. However I’ve just found out that there’s a new Homatics Box 4K V2 coming out soon.
Now my doubt is: buy the older device with a better supported SoC or wait for the newer one ? I mean, so much work has been done on fine tuning the S905X4 and I think it has years of future CE releases ahead. I don’t know, maybe buying a device with the S905X5M right now it’s not the right move. I don’t see any advantage and by the way when things like, for example, H266 support will be a relevant thing, at that point my hypothetical S905X4 box will have already played lots of contents
Is my argument valid or I am overlooking something…
Ok, so I’ll try with a simpler more direct question maybe I’ll be more lucky
Homatics Bos R 4K Plus or Rocktek G2 ? So USB vs MicroSD… I’d like the idea of having nothing sticking outisde the box, but I don’t know if the micro sd slot is comparable with the USB slot performance wise. Any experience to share about that ?
Use case dependent, never had any issues with microsd but if you’re seeing slowdowns you can always redirect paths with path substitution. https://kodi.wiki/view/Path_substitution
If it were me and I had issues I would mount the android data folder and redirect the thumbnails cache to the internal emmc.
If you have a DV TV with TV-LED support, then for now the AM6B+ is more stable and better. I’m currently testing ce22 and comparing it with am6b+, so far there are a lot of bugs and glitches when working with DV. We need to wait until all the major sores are resolved. Therefore, if here and now, am6b+ is better. If for the future, then the am9 pro
