Can USB HID remote (eg FLIRC) be used to wake up a device?

Most CE-supported S905X4-K boxes (Homatics Box R 4K, RockTek G3, Nokia 8010) seem to be lacking a IR receiver that allows for wakeup. See a summary here:

So out of the box a wakeup using the remote control is not possible?
I cannot imagine that any streamer box is sold that cannot be woken up using the remote control.

What is the actual situation for the aformentioned devices running Android (A):

(A1) The box can be woken up using the remote, because it actually has an IR receiver and the remote is a IR/BT hybrid remote.

(A2) The box can be “turned on” using the BT remote, but the box is never really turned off. The power-off button just makes the box enter a low-power slow CPU mode.

Finally, if we have the case of (A2) here, would it be possible to retrofit wakeup by adding a FLIRC to the USB2 port and FLIRC would keep to be powered (actually emulating a keyboard, so woudl be wakeup by pressing a key).

The device is never truly turned off since something needs to be power to read the remote. FLIRC is just a stupid way of using USB-HID to read other remotes when you can just by a USB-HID remote.

The only CE way is with bl301 injection on the few devices that support it, try a forum search. Newer Amlogic devices seem to have something equivalent for BT in the bootloader but AFAIK CE doesn’t support that.

In this thread @freddy says that bl301 injection doesn’t work on S905X4 device:

In newer Android the BT power up does work but as I wrote CE doesn’t support that .

would any USB HID remote be capable of waking up the box so that it boots into CE?

None that I’ve tried but do you think the USB ports would be powered? That wouldn’t make much sense.

I don’t know. I think I have seen some BIOS that allows starting the machine when a key is pressed on the keyboard. But I guess that is an entirely different story than a S905X4.

So bottom line would be NO, we cannot wakeup a S905X4 for booting CE using any of these options:

  • IR
  • BT
  • USB HID, incl. FLIRC

If your board supports IR then maybe you could look at this Alternative suspend option for IR wakeup, when bl301 tool not possible

Sorry, you lost me on this one. I don’t see how this relates to the thread topic. Are you talking about HDMI CEC instead of IR and BT remote?

I just found my old FLIRC and no, it cannot wake up a Kinhank G1, so I guess the same result for other devices based on S905X4(-J/-K).

Yes
you are correct
