Cannot play 4K with HD audio to 4K TV via Yamaha RX-A860

Definitely not an issue of HDMI cables (tested brand new very good quality cables from HK1 Rbox x4 to Yamaha RX-A860 & then to TCL 43RC630K Roku TV)

None will play via Yamaha RX-A860, no matter what settings I use for depth or colour,TV just states No Signal

If I plug OE HK1 Rbox x4 to HDMI1 input on TV directly, it plays fine, but of course I do not have any audio (because ARC is on HDMI2)

Yamaha is set to Mode1 already - Selecting the HDMI 4K signal format (4K MODE)

Anybody any ideas?

This is the proper way to connect HDMI cables. Yamaha should then be connected to HDMI2 (ARC) on TV, and passthrough should be selected in Kodi and in TV, so that audio signal passes through whole chain to Yamaha, which will then do what is needed with received untouched audio stream. Of course you have to set proper input (ARC in this case) mode on Yamaha.
This way works for me perfectly on several Yamaha AVs and LG TVs…

How odd, isn’t a proper way to connect multiple units to TV via multiple HDMI Amp inputs, with a single HDMI out to TV (which also work for ARC aerial TV itself back to amp)?
I have always used amp switching with no issues with FHD chain/media

I have 6 devices connected to amp. I do NOT have 6 inputs on TV (to make it 1 to 1)

After redoing the settings for ARC/HDMI in TV, I can get above m2ts/mkv play this way (out to HDMI1 & eARC back to amp), but I lose OSD control of the amp (as that goes to HDMI2), which is not ideal

So what would be an issue with OE via amp that produces this problems?

OK, I see now your situation a little better which I could not see before from my living room; I couldn’t see that you use multiple devices input to your Yamaha, and still don’t see what TV you’re using… My suggestion was for only one device used…
Then, every modern TV should have a setting for audio OUT, something like "Use internal speakers, Use optical output, and Use eARC over HDMI (usually HDMI2)
Since your Yamaha does not pass through proper video signals, and your TV does not pass through proper audio signals, you are stuck with only one solution: use a proper “HDMI Splitter” that splits video signal from audio. Then you connect your box to the splitter HDMI input, your TV to splitter’s video HDMI output, and Yamaha to splitter’s audio output…

Well, every device in chain was mentioned in the original post!

HK1 Rbox x4 to Yamaha RX-A860 & then to TCL 43RC630K Roku TV (this one does not support only DTS-HD audio)

There are few media (in first post) that do not play this way.
Any other 4K media I tried played fine

And as I said, using your suggestion, I can make it work with above media, but lose amp’s OSD control during using HK1 Rbox x4 connected to HDMI1 on TV directly

I would not put it this way: “Since your Yamaha does not pass through proper video signals, and your TV does not pass through proper audio signals”
because one and the other works fine (Yamaha DOES pass through video & TV return audio just fine) in majority of tried media

Just not the ones above

So I would like to understand where the problem lies (likely between Coreelec & Yamaha)
I cannot go to Yamaha & just say xyz does not play (because I do not even know what OE sends that could be a problem, if I knew more I could take it up with them)

That’s the luck with AVR. Best is to get 2-3 in focus and try them out. When it does not work with your needs send it back.

As written on multiple places here with AVR you run only into trouble.
ARC might help.

Vendor from AVR want help you because you will need minimum 1000 people say they same.
Even when you can technical prove the failure it might never be solved.

No, the fault is in their box, in terms of unsupported resolutions.

You play video with 2160p24hz, TV supports 2160p24hz, but Yamaha doesn’t support the resolution (but also don’t remove unsupported resolutions from EDID). That’s it!

Nevermind, I failed understanding the problem.
2160p24 is 4k resolution, so AVR should support it. Don’t know why fails, maybe bitrate/color res…
Worth to check if it works in direct connection to TV.

Make sure that you enable Deep Color on the receiver’s HDMI port where CE is connected.
If you still get no signal, try to force CE to output 4:2:2 in settings.

We are only talking about these few media, any other 4K I tried played fine (without HDR, but that will be subject of another thread) via Yamaha
I can only get output with Auto, any other settings on CE result in either wrong colour/resolution or black screen

While RX-A860 supports Deep Color - https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/794331/RX-A860_RX-A760_Manual_English.pdf , I have no idea where in settings to find it (or if needs to even be configured)

You can try to play a 4K file that works and the one that gives you “no signal” and run dispinfo from SSH during playback. Post both working and non working URLs. Maybe there will be some clue there.
But I’m pretty sure that it’s some configuration thing with your AVR.

When you tried to connect the box directly to your TV, did you use the same HDMI port as the AVR is connected to?
