CoreELEC 21.3-Omega Amlogic-ng Discussion

CE-21 nightly did end.

Anyone having same issue with 3860x2160 screen resolution not opening the full screen?

Yes. I just upgraded my Homatics and the Kodi screen only displays on 1/4 of my TV. The weird thing is that the movies and screensaver appear as full screen but not Kodi. Not sure what to do.

Thank you, Im keeping at 1080 full hd resolution waiting if any fix

Are you leaving GUI at 1080 not 2160?

Will check it, but this happened after the 21.3 update, at 21.2 I was running 4k 3860×2160 without any problem

Obviously not starting a debate or anything, but I believe the CSMC team have worked out FEL for their device (which I think is a custom SOC based on 905x4) using 5.15 kernel. So it’s possible. Whether or not it’s worth it, not sure.

As far as I know they use kernel 4.9, and will continue on that version. And I think the only thing that is custom about their SOC is that AML printed -O on it for them  Otherwise it don’t believe it has any more or less capabilities than an unlicensed s905x4

There has been little discussion about this new implementation on the CoreELEC forum.

C(losed)SMC implements this feature as part of a proprietary binary blob, so “open” source does not apply here. CSMC is in no position to share details about their implementation.

Due to encryption, the provided module can only be used on their own product.

It’s all based on the abandoned and outdated kernel 4.9, not the current Android 14 kernel 5.15.

Please remember that DV FEL is marketed as a “selling point” to boost sales.

It is not true Dolby Vision—only tone mapping.
If it were real Dolby Vision, it would constitute a license violation, and I doubt such a small company wants to risk litigation with Dolby Laboratories. Maybe someone will ask Dolby Laboratories if they provide information about such implementation so it can be used overall, like include Raspberry Pi. The answer would be interesting…

All discussion about “true” and “false” TV Led Dolby Vision become useless to when using tone mapping.

The SoC used does not include such Dolby Laboratories licenses. They may have paid some legitimate fee in the background to avoid trouble over license violations, but I’m unsure what Dolby Laboratories thinks about reverse-engineering and using their proprietary metadata in a commercial product. Doing so would undermine Dolby’s entire licensing model.

I think Dolby has largely given up on FEL and it’s unlikely to sue anyone over its implementation. Even if the other party or CoreELEC implement support Dolby Vision support on unlicensed chips, then Dolby will still get a licensing revenue from the TVs and receivers that the signal has to pass through.

I feel as if the whole UHD format has been DRMed to death and that is why streaming has won. You can’t even play UHD on a computer, in a car, or anywhere outside super expensive devices. Dolby has probably largely written off physical media revenues and gets most of their money from streaming.

Yes, 21.3 final is buggy build. If you will suspend of device during playing of movie, after then is automaticaly wakeup after 1 minute. Last nightly build of CE21NG (20251102) dont have e.g. this bug of wakeuping.

On X3 soc in dual boot mode, when I start Android, the system crashes. Not always. But it often happens. Where should I look for the error?

Ask your vendor where you did buy your device?

I have a homatics box r 4k plus. I need some clarification about upgrading to android 14. If i do that will booting into coreelec 21.3 still be possible?

I read that the new android version causes coreelec to bootloop.

I will reply myself - i think i found the PR to fix this and it is included!

right - but that commit was into the 5.15 branch :stuck_out_tongue: I was curious if it maded to the 4.9 branch - looks like it did.

Thank you

I don’t think so

that was the commit I linked it referred your commit from an older branch:

Also I upgraded my boxes to Android 14 and coreelec 21.3-ng is booting!

LE: seems i was linking to a different commit than you :see_no_evil_monkey: and i put my foot in my mouth.
However coreelec 21.3-ng still boots on both of my boxes - weird!
coreelec 21.3-ng boots only if I do reboot update :frowning:

After doing any work/update on Android, CE must be started with options like for first CE installation; ie by using Android app “Reboot to CoreElec” with option “First Boot”, or by pressing apropriate buton when powering on. After that CE should always start first like before Android update.
