CoreElec and HDR10+ / HDR10 Plus

If it plays in HDR10 then there is no problem to see it… :slight_smile:

Yes but won’t be obvious its not playing HDR10+. From a seperate chat with Sam Nazarko (OSMC), it looks like the solution (to output HDR10+) is fairly trivial?

The solution should be fairly trivial if the kernel had correct HDR10+ pipeline. So in order to get HDR10+, one has to fix the kernel first. This is something that likely will happen in the close future, so stay tuned :+1:

I hope you are right

Indeed, the fact that it does not switch at all in HDR, it makes my films HDR10 + quite unusable, which becomes a problem. While if it switched at least in HDR 10, it would not be a major problem anymore. Especially for those who have no HDR10 + TV anyway. Until a true compatibility of the HDR10 +, it would be nice.

You are definitely not alone. In the meantime, us with a S905X/S912 device, should use it for HDR10+ media. People who don’t have the older devices should use their TV’s internal player.

HDR10+ is generally implemented so it automatically fallback to HDR10 if it doesn’t find HDR10+ support. This would have worked if the implementation in vendor kernel had been complete. Now it currently don’t recognise HDR10+ support and fallback to HDR10. Hopefully that will change in the close future, so be patient :slight_smile:

Just to let you know that with the 20190923 build , I get HDR10 output with a HDR10+ video.

Good job with the tempfix, will do for now :slight_smile:

Finally ?! It’s good news.
we will be able to start our video collection HDR 10 + pending full compatibility.

I have got a Mecool M8S PRO L (s912 chipset) running CE 9.2.0 linked to Panasonic tv HDR10+ capable and the mecool does not allow HDR10+, just HDR10. Same is for the Odroid N2 (latest CE nightly) and the X96max (latest CE nightly).
I only get proper HDR10+ from the Amazon Firestick 4k running kodi or MrMc or Emby
Are there hopes to run HDR10+ on our beloved CE devices?

Very unlikely it will happen for 3.14 kernel. But I think (not sure) that it will eventually work on the N2 using a different kernel that we are currently working on.

Is there any hope to get hdr10+ in this new kernel CE is using?

At this time I think what we’re dealing with is lack of support for dynamic metadata by either Kodi or something else in CE that we’re missing. This might be the same reason why DV isn’t working on supported SoCs.
@cdu13a any input on this?

@TheCoolest
There is a tool that can parse HDR10+ metadata (can be piped through ffmpeg too), I don’t know if this has any use for real time playback or not, probably not.

HDR 10+ works now and my Panasonic TV shows HDR 10* on related movies. Thank you to all devs.

Great news. When will this be included in the stable release?

Is it already scheduled ?

It’ll come out as stable when it’s ready. In the meantime, if you need it right now, use the nightly. It’s fairly stable.

It’s fantastic that HDR+ is enabled but… the problem is that there are no AVR supporting HDR+ yet (or very limited number of them released this year like Yamaha) and it would be that manufacturers might not be interesting in firmware upgrade which enable HDR+ (if even possible) From income perspective it would be rather new models equipped in HDR+ capability.

So the only way to utilize HDR+ in CoreELEC is to connect CoreELEC’s box as suggested in above article:
" What if your AV receiver doesn’t pass through HDR10+ signals?
If your HDR10+ source is a device with dual HDMI output (like most 4K UHD blu-ray players), you can connect your source to the HDR10+ ready-TV through its HDMI 1 output (picture only) and connect your source to the AV receiver through its HDMI 2 output (sound only)."

Correct, but some people like myself aren’t running an AVR, and run a soundbar via ARC, in which case if the TV is compatible then it works. Not entirely sure the relevance. Yes, it’s a shame your setup doesn’t support a feature but for some others it’s great news. Software development shouldn’t be crippled because of AVR support availability.

sammutd88: you are absolutely right, and you misunderstood my point. I’m grateful to the CoreELEC devs… they are doing amazing work and of course it wasn’t my intention at all to express my disappointment because of my AV configuration. I just provided an example that in some situations/configurations CoreELEC is one step ahead of Amplituners manufacturers :slight_smile:
