Yeah, you need eARC both ways, otherwise you’re limited to low bitrate audio. But if you do have that, it’s also a solution.
I haven’t really looked at ARC specs on HDR10+ capable TVs. Mid-range AVRs with 4K passthrough and Atmos support often come with eARC. At least the known brands (Denon X2600H, Marantz NR1710 etc).
Yes, the tv is the problematic part. It is not common even on the 2019 models. Only the more expensive tvs have it. But I use LG tv so all the HDR10+ stuff is non relevant for me.
Maybe in the 2020 models it will be more common. Personally, I wouldn’t upgrade unless the TV supports eARC and all 3 HDR variations. Panasonic has ones with all 3 but not eARC and also I think their OS is not considered very good. And then there is HDMI 2.1 to consider too.
I think it can be a while till there is a set that offers all that for affordable prices.
There are several splitters out there supporting it, yet they are quite expensive. One of the best is 4K Vertex2 18GBps. It really depends on the cost of your setup. In my case, I rather swap the AVR when upgrading to a newer TV next time with HDMI 2.1 and eARC instead of buying a $200-400 splitter
A 400$ splitter makes no sense for me either.
My AVR already has eARC so changing my tv (to an eARC capable one) in the future solve this kind of problem.
Yes, we have kind of stalemate situation: very limited number of TV brands are going to add eARC functionality but a lot of them are capable to handle HDR+ (even those 2 years old) On other hand very limited number of AVR producers releasing their products with HDR+ support but are able to handle eARC. I personally own Panasonic OLED since mid 2018 which is HDR+ ready but when I’m searching for AVR with HDR+ support I can’t find anything except above article about Yamaha (even on Yamaha’s web page there are no AVR RX-A2/4/6/8 yet introduced)
I think it takes time for companies to adapt. I believe the very first HDR10+ UHDs only came out in late 2018 and it’s been slowly growing since. There are studios like Warner that release a lot of titles with support for all 3 flavors now. I’m not sure how much presence it has in the big steaming players but I think they offer titles with them as well.
The whole situation reminds me a little the of battle between Blu-ray and HDDVD.
Yes, movie studios will do what we as customers expecting: speed up hardware manufacturers to adopt… we need to just wait and see. I have already sent a question to Denon reseller in my country where I live asking about HDR+ support… Curious what answer will be (if any ) Have a nice weekend.
Samsung try force this HDR10+, others like LG , Sony support Dolby Vision. The only thing why the HDR10+ live yet, its Samsung. Technically DV has more better brightness, color depth, etc. Once when Samsung will support DV at last, the HDR10+ format will dead.
Rest assured they will all do eventually. No company will let competition get ahead for too long, unless they plan to close up shop. Also, a great opportunity to sell to avid upgraders.
The one thing that stands in the way of DV and plays in favor of HDR10+, is the lack of substantial support in standalone devices like streamers. There is only a handful of streaming devices that support DV, and even that I think is only for streaming services. adamg mentioned GT-King Pro and UGOOS AM6 Plus support DV, but I’m unsure in what capacity as they don’t have official NF/Amz etc licenses afaik.
While not officially endorsing piracy, the manufacturers are aware that the client base for their products consists of quite a few people who do not have an interest to pay for everything they want to watch.
The growing number of streaming services will take it’s toll. No one will want to pay 10 different services no matter how cheap they are + live TV is not dead yet and that requires paying too.
Tim, you seem to know more about what works and what doesn’t then me.
Isn’t it weird that dolby vision tv’s are cheaper then hdr tv’s are? And the 4k tv’s, i always want to grab a tv, so it leaves marks, mostly because the tv’s nowadays don’t have any edges on them. And maybe because the 4k leds are much more sensitive then the 1080p’s are. Btw for like 300 dollars you have a second hand hdr receiver with hdmi 2.0, that even supports dolby atmos.
Buenas tardes , se sabe si los Amlogic S912 podran soportar Hdr10+?
actualmente cuales dan soporte a Hdr10+? , siempre hablando de tener instalado Coreelec , gracias .
