Dolby Vision out of sync through HDMI with Bluetooth audio connected to LG OLED TV

I have an LG C2 OLED TV. I have noticed that whenever I connect any player (Bluray or Set-top box[CE & Android]) through HDMI and watch DV content with Bluetooth earbuds/headphones connected to the TV, the video’s DV metadata is out of sync and causes delayed brightness change at every scene cut. In addition to that, I also see this weird outline for any moving objects in the scene as well.

This issue doesn’t happen if I watch the DV content directly through the Webos player itself and I have watched a lot of stuff that way. The issue also doesn’t happen if I watch standard HDR10 stuff through an HDMI player. It is only weirdly specific to the scenario where the DV content is played through an external player through HDMI and a Bluetooth audio device is connected to the TV. The issue again doesn’t happen in the case of DV content playing through HDMI without any Bluetooth device connected to the TV.

It would be great if someone could confirm this is the case with their TV as well, and if anyone has any idea on why this is happening and what can be done to fix it.

Bit tricky to test that since you are using a bluray player and many perhaps have other boxes like Ugoos or homatics etc

I have BT headphones connected to my LG C2 and with the ugoos AM6b+, play back DV files just fine without any brightness or outline issue.

With BT in general its best to set the LG C2 sound advanced settings to PCM (not bitstream) and also any settings on your boxes or bluray players to PCM, this way you get better compatibility and more important less latency in sound playback since you want the best lipsync performance possible.

It’s worth a try but not sure the above can help, also worth making sure your bluray player is set up correctly, worth defaulting the settings on the bluray player and TV sometimes that fixes issues too.

Thank you very much for testing this. I assume you mean your HDMI Input Audio format in advanced settings is set to PCM instead of Bitstream? In my case, it was set as Bitstream until now. I will change it to PCM and test it thoroughly again.

I firmly believe it has something to do with the HDMI interface of the TV itself since the same issue has happened with both my Sony X700 and the Kinhank G1 device.

Also, do you mind sharing the firmware version of your C2?

Yes the hdmi input audio format, I set all my hdmi sources to PCM. But there is another setting below that one called Digital sound output, I have that set to PCM also.

PCM is the most compatible format and lowest latency for BT hardware, hps/buds and soundbars, its just that it does not pass through dolby digital and dts and other streams.

Its 13.30.85 firmware, just checked that is still the latest firmware also from september, they have slowed down the firmware releases since its probably as good as it gets and is older now.

Have you tried all the sound output settings under kodi settings and system then Audio and Audio output device? sometimes the default one doesn’t always work, I have ALSA AML-Augesound, hdmi mutli ch PCM. There are several other options there so you may have to try all of them one by one and see if you have any success.

Its a tricky issue, maybe it could also be a bug somewhere both hardware or software, so keep testing, testing and testing.

So I have tried setting the HDMI input audio format on the TV to PCM and also set the Audio on CE system settings to HDMI multi ch PCM and disabled passthrough. And the issue still persists.

However, my firmware is 04.40.90 (WebOS 22). This issue was there in the original firmware that the TV shipped with as well. I guess I will test this again after upgrading to the latest firmware.

hmm very odd, I have not really had this kind of issue at all but use to be an Nvidia shield pro user for almost 5 years and recently got the AM6b+ with latest nightly 25th xmas CE build with just the usual defaults.

And I have tried plenty of DV mkvs over the last few years with various BT hps also.

Do you get the same issue with a different pair of BT buds/hps?

Have you set up the TV fully with a good guide, I recommend hdtv LG C2 setup video here

It’s always worth updating to latest firmwares on hps/buds and TVs and also trying different hdmi input ports like hdmi 1 or 2 etc, worth also trying several different hdmi cables and trying it directly from bluray or box and straight into the hdmi ports in the LG C2, no adaptors or extenders etc.

BT headphones/buds are tricky with the c2 or TVs in general, the C2 only supports aptx HD which has high latency, so I use a BT transmitter with aptx-adaptive low latency mode paired with headphones with aptx adaptive low latency, this way my videos and sound are in sync and latency can’t cause issue.

Also worth factory defaulting your TV and re-trying again just in case a setting is causing that glitch.

I think I finally found the culprit, it is the DV picture mode on this TV.

From the day I got the TV, I set the DV picture mode to Cinema Home since I found the vanilla Cinema mode to be a tad too dark for my taste and the ambient lighting in my room. Now with the BT headphones connected, I switched the mode from Cinema Home to Cinema and voila, the issue is no more.

In fact, I also found that the other couple of modes such as Vivid and Standard also have this issue when a BT device is connected. Only the Cinema mode is trouble-free if there is a BT device connected to the TV. I think all these other modes including Cinema Home have some sort of automatic or dynamic processing involved, which is taking a hit/delay if there is a BT device connected as well and the DV source is coming through HDMI (a very oddly specific scenario).

I’m assuming you have your TV set to Cinema mode for DV. Can you test with the other modes(especially Cinema Home) while having a pair of BT headphones connected simultaneously?

Hi, reading your post with interest, I have the am6b+ also and momentum 4 headphones Bluetooth from the am6b+. Does the Bluetooth transmitter with adaptive improve the sound quality. May I ask is it a USB dongle or box and is it connected to the am6b+.
Thank you.

That’s great you figured it out, I have never used Cinema home since its inaccurate, if you see that Avforums video set up he prefers filmmaker mode (most accurate) or Cinema.

Sure it’s dimmer (cinema) but less issues or filmmaker mode is fine for DV or HDR.

I will try and test a DV source if possible down the road just got a lot of things on my plate atm.

The best BT reciever I have used to date is the Eppfun LE audio BT transmitter, this one here

You can get it cheaper but longer deliver from aliexpress here

As long as your headphones support aptx adaptive low latency, its one of the best ones imo and I have tested £300+ BT transmitters, including ifi Zen3 dac
and even that Eppfun LE model is superior in latency and performance.

Hi @Hiteshx86 Did you update your C2 to the latest WebOS 24 that has been rolling out recently?

Not yet, first I have heard of it but yeah see the news on google there is no update on LGs c2 firmware page its just showing the old September one from last year.

I would be weary about installing it, let others do it first since it may disable of change settings too much or have more bugs.

I just tried to change my picture mode to Cinema home and test an DV movie with my BT headphones and I don’t even have the cinema home picture option! Its just Cinema, filmaker mode and isf dark/bright and the basic ones. I am on the september 2024 firmware though so its been that long since I changed the settings I did not note the change.

Not sure how you get Cinema home mode, are you on latest sep 2024 C2 firmware seen here?

I also remembered I had perhaps a similar issue with brightness changing/shimmering during DV content on my CX years ago, but found Cinema mode to fix it, it was the hdtv YT and Avforums c2 set up guide that always put it in Cinema or isf mode, Not Cinema Home so I just stuck with it through out the last several years and never looked again.

Maybe LG removed Cinema home due to inaccurate picture or issues, lots of YT and TV calibrators moaned about it many years ago.

I was playing back a DV source when no Cinema home option was there, I found it maybe was not true DV file.

Re-tried another and its there, ran a few episodes and no issues with picture playback in general with Cinema home mode. Its much brighter though compared to Cinema.

Also double checked the AVS C2 mega thread last 10 pages, and the korean LG site has the new LG web os firmware available, but I do not recommend installing it since its got lots issues, VRR stutter issues, laggy menu, netflix issues etc

I think it may take a good 2-3 firmware’s to fix these issues, but choice is yours.

Some owners reported there was no Cinema mode with the new firmware its been replaced with filmmaker mode?, so something to be weary off.

Either way I prefer Cinema or filmmaker mode, its the 2 modes I used to calibrate my LG C2 with, since its what TV calibrators recommended since they are the most accurate and error free picture modes, so I prefer to stick with that recommendation.

If you see this thread here read the last 10 or so pages since its full of issues and comments regarding the new firmware.

Total nonsense, no mode is added nor removed or replaced. Internet news forums are more and more becoming places for false information. Don’t believe everything you read on internet
I have the new firmware on several of mine LGs without any issues or bugs and have no time to read other people’s lies & misinformation.

WebOS 24 was supposed to bring Filmmaker mode to Dolby Vision which was not there prior. But not sure whether Filmmaker mode has replaced Cinema mode. But both of them are deemed to be the (sort of)same modes even in plain HDR.
