Help with Ugoos devices and setup in general

Ugoos

  • am6+ Amlogic S922XJ

  • plays all audio and video (including dv 7 fel)

  • am8 pro Amlogic S928X-J

  • plays all audio and video (excluding dv 7 fel)

  • SK1 Amlogic S928X-K

  • plays all audio and video (excluding dv 7 fel)

  1. Is the above correct? I read through the am8 thread and wasn’t 100% sure. Are S928X-J/S928X-K basically the same or does Amlogic S928X-K support more audio when compared to S928X-J and S922XJ? Or is that only in Android where as in CoreElec/Kodi that doesn’t matter as it does its own decoding? I plan only running CoreElec so I have no need for Android:
  1. I also was reading that the am8 pro (and sk1?) may never get “Profile 7 FEL” due to licensing issues or module missing from the kernel. So, if that’s the case and I went for the am8pro/sk1 would that mean I only miss out on “Profile 7/FEL” only or is there something I have missed (audio codecs missing also?)

  2. In regards to the “performance boost”, I see it may also come to am8 pro/sk1 if dev manages to get things working. So are devs now starting to move towards the am8pro/sk1 in the coming months and perhaps it would make sense to purchase one of those devices at this stage?

  1. Perhaps “Profile 7/FEL” isnt a big issue for me personally as I can opt for Profile 8.1 like below (although I perhaps I have misunderstood something):

Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, no metadata compression, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, Version HDR10, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, Version HDR10, HDR10 compatible”

Not sure if this makes a difference or not but I finally got a 4k tv (LG G2) and a 2nd hand Sony HT-A700 (7.1.2) sound bar from eBay so just wanted to make sure I have it all right as its quite a lot to wrap my head around. All these Amlogic look so similar its hard to keep up.

  1. With the above setup and the TV doesnt support all the audio formats (while the soundbar does) I was planning on it going
    ugoos > soundbar > tv…is that right?
The LG G2 review on rtings says “”Dolby Vision - Yes” does that means all profiles?

I’m sorry for this wall of text but any advice would be really appreciated. I’m tempted to go for the newer hardware (am8pro/sk1) as I’m so late to the train and I’m worried the am6+ will soon get replaced by one of the newer models.

Sorry if I have posted to the wrong section or asked too many questions in one go. I just didnt want to clutter up the place by asking tons of different questions.

Hi, have a look here.

Thanks, that also seems to recommend the AM6B, just to confirm since there are three, its the: AM6 Plus 2021 (Amlogic S922XJ) is the one to get if AM8Pro and SK1 are a no go?

If you don’t need Fel than you can go with the newer hardware.

  1. CoreElec supports all of the audio codecs. No difference here
  2. No FEL on AM8 Pro/SK1 or any of the S928 socs, purchase on existing functionality today
  3. If you don’t care about FEL then sure
  4. Converting FEL to P8 is not the same thing. MEL → P8 has no loss. FEL → P8 will lose the enhancement layer

There was a hint thrown that FEL for S928X may be possible in the near future. Here’s hoping.

Yeah I was just about to buy the AM6B+ but when on the CoreElec forum I saw a post from one of the admins/contributors saying they will eventually drop the AM6 in favour or newer hardware/cant support it forever since its a side project for them). Perhaps I misread the situation so mean to cause any alarm. I cant find the post now, I should have bookmarked it.

I did keep a note of these however:

^ dont really know what that means but maybe they have a s298x box and might get things working?

There was also a post from the Minix forum about the NEO U8K-ULTRA which uses the newer Amlogic S928X, also perhaps hinting and DV but again who knows. So, I gambled and purchased the SK1.

As soon as I done that I saw another post about a totally different chipset “S905X4-J” that might actually be better supported. Somebody has made a custom firmware, so latest Android TV plus booting CoreElec from usb/ad, where as the SK1 has an ancient version of Android.Since it was so old I just planned on running CoreElec from the emmc

You have all pretty much answered my answer so not sure who to click the solution for. Thanks for all the great advice :+1:
