Lots of skipped frames with DV FEL content with CE NG on S905x4

Hi there,

First of all, many thanks for all the work done by the team, much appreciated.

I recently purchased a Dune HD Pro Vision 4K (S905x4) in order to try Corelec NG (latest nightly 20250606) on it for DV FEL playback.

Unfortunately, after checking everything and having other users confirm the issue on that player, there are lots of skipped frames when playing DV FEL content, even from the local CoreELEC partition on my fast USB3 drive.

This skipped frames issue goes away if you disable DV or enable the P7>P8.1 conversion option.

I’ve asked Ugoos AM6B+ users to test the same test files, and many reported that there are no skipped frames with the S922x.

After a lot testing, I have written a detailed report here, and shared test clips and screen shots to show the issue. There are three test clips available:

Back to the Future (1985) shows little to no skipping, possibly because the opening credits are a long traveling shot with no cuts.

Total Recall (1990) shows moderate skipping on S905x4.

The Italian Job (2003) show intense skipping on S905x4.

It happens with a brand new CoreELEC NG install using the default Estuary skin, so no add-ons or custom skins are involved.

Many thanks in advance for your help, happy to provide further testing, and thanks again for all the great work. That’s the only major issue I found on the system, so I hope it will be fixable on the S905x4.

Just to add that this issue has also been confirmed by an another experienced user as being present on the Dune HD Premier 4K Pro, which uses the same chipset as the Dune HD Pro Vision 4K.

So it looks like this skipped frames issue with DV FEL content affects all S905x4 models.

Yes, this happens with S905X4 boxes, I have one too. Only MKV playback is the least problematic with the latest ng nightly, even as of today. DTDL and BDMV playback is worse, especially when you try to do a FF or RW.

But sadly, the ng builds are no longer getting any active development from the CE team, except for xbmc upstream updates.

To this point I have only seen reports of this with Dune S905X4 boxes so I followed the steps in the linked in the avsforum thread with my Homatics Box R 4K Plus. I used CE-NG 21.2 stable.

Not surprising here but it too suffers from a lot of skipped frames in the referenced titles. It was very noticeable in the Italian Job sample, you can certainly tell when it happens where there is a burst of skipped frames. I would not be able to watch that movie under those circumstances.

I know no log == no problem but given that CE-NG is EOL, I’m not expected anyone to do anything about this at this point from a development perspective.

As it stands I think this is more of an information touch point that anyone considering buying an S905X4 for FEL content needs to be aware of.

Nobody did write where the media is read from!
Local or from network? Only tests from local media are useful!
As mentioned already DV DL is EOL as it’s not need anymore when convert to P8.1 by libdovi.

And there will be no fix in CE-NG anymore as all this code base is out of date a long time already.
We just received newer kernel sources and will update to 5.15.170 next.

The linked avsforum thread in the first post describes that the issue exists regardless of media location including when read locally. My testing was with files in /storage/downloads/.

I realize FEL is tied to NG and is EOL. Again I don’t expect any support here.

I only mentioned my findings because I still continually see discussions both here and on other forums about devices that support all DV profiles including FEL and see S905X4 devices thrown out as an option.

Yes and No. You lose accuracy on some DV FEL’s i.e Saving Private Ryan but that’s what disc players is for, right?

Question for you; if Amlogic release a new kernel source with FEL support will you use it?

:joy: what type of a question is this? CE supported DV FEL in CE-NG when it worked with the source, why wouldn’t CE-NO support it if it was possible?

If you manage to fix the source, that fix will be applied to CE-NO.

I wouldn’t group all S905X4-j boxes.

Tested all 3 files on Kinhank G1 earlier

Used default TV LED setting in Dolby Vision, Tested over local and SMB Share, lastest Nightly

Back to Future 45 skip(SMB 54),40 skips at start if clip then settles down VsyncOff range -10.0 to 0.7. Playback is fine

Total Recall 54 skip(SMB 110)around 45 skips at start then settles down,VsyncOff never moves from 0.0 Playback is Excellent

Italian Job skip 76(SMB 123)right at start huge jitter 65 skip, still VsyncOff eventually settles to -1.0 to 0.6,Playback is poor…Not unwatchable.

Also Tested using Player LED.. results vary..

I don’t think these test files are accurate to full Movie Playback Test….Often at startup is horrible then how’s is the rest of the Movies Playback.

Your observation that the beginning is the worst was specifically called out.

There seems to be more skipped frames in the first few minutes of the titles that show the issue. After a while, you still get some with problematic titles, but it’s not as many.

As far as grouping all S905X4 devices, the sample size reported thus far is small however we’ve yet to see any reports of any S905X4 device that did not behave the same.

Agree

I would like to see someone with the Ugoos X4Q Extra test these files, for comparison

I also Tested these samples on non Dolby Vision Licensed SoC S905X4

The HK1 RBOX S905X4,on Dolby Vision TCL TV they default to HDR10, only 24 to 30 skips per file and playback is fine on all 3

So wait, this seems to be happening on all S905X4 boxes?! If so, it’s strange as there’s no DV to disable in the non -J or -K boxes.
