Using CoreElec 21.0 Omega for my Odroid-N2+. I haven’t changed any settings/updates (that I recall) and the all the main menus are “cut off/zoomed in” a few inches all around. Videos/TV/media all play just fine but it’s as if 2 inches is cut off on all sides when not playing TV/Movies. It’s just all the menus.
I thought it might be my TV but it worked before (and there were no TV updates that I’m aware of). I looked in CoreElec/Kodi menus for anything to change display, but nothing made a difference.
Nothing on TV called “Overscan” or any other variation. The TV is kinda “dumb” and simple for a smart (meaning just modern < 2 years old). Is this something from the Odroid-N2+ side? and the version I’m using (21.0 Omega)? I usually don’t upgrade anything once it’s stable for random issues like this popping up. Should I upgrade CoreElec software?
I’m at a loss of where to look to solve this. All help is much appreciated.
This is 99% a overscan issue. Unfortunately, this is a game of lottery with TV models and brands.
There are some that force overscan when using TV mode (ie: watching regular channels through Analog, DVB-T, etc.) because it was the way to do it since the beginning of TV broadcasting times and some manufacturers keep doing it by default and don’t even allow the change. This may have some minor sense in some old analog parts but useless in DVB-T because overscan isn’t needed anymore.
Some other TVs only disable overscan based on HDMI type content. That’s maybe why you’re experiencing issues with the Kodi menus (no HDMI type specified) but everything works on movies (HDMI type set to movie).
Some other TVs disable overscan depending on the “picture mode” setting of your TV. Look for the menu with “Vivid”, “Normal”, “Cinema”, “True Cinema”, “Games”, etc. because some of these modes, especially those with “cinema” in the name are required to disable overscan to avoid cropping the image.
As said, it totally depends on your TV brand/model and almost nothing can be done outside to prevent it.
Look in your (English) Owners Manual, page 27:
“In DTV/HDMI/Component mode (high-definition), Just Scan is available.”
Set “Just scan” to ON for any/all HDMI inputs.
When watching any signal from any HDMI input, in TV Picture Menu look for “Aspect Ratio” setting to find Just Scan option → set to ON.
WOW, solved it exactly! For those with same issue with this model TV I went in my TV settings, found “Aspect Ratio” (not “Picture”) and “Just Scan” was set to ‘auto’ (maybe a TV update changed this since I never did?). I switched “Just Scan” to “on” → Instant fix.
