MythTV Plugin: Can I display TV subtitles somehow?

Hey everyone,

My 80 year old mother-in-law is visiting us for an extended period of time. She asked if we could turn on subtitles on Live TV to help her. Sure, I said, and then realized this was not as straightforward as I had thought.

The setup is with a dedicated MythTV backend running as a VM on my home server, and a few little SBC’s around the house serving as frontends, all running Kodi on CoreElec.

Going to the subtitle menu during playback, it apparently treats the recording as a standard video file, does not locate any embedded subtitles, and has an option to add a subtitle file, but that’s obviously not going to work well for live TV.

Is there a way to do this, or is the feature just not implemented in MythTV, Kodi, or both?

Appreciate any suggestions.

I have same setup - mythtv backend, kodi/coreelec frontend and could not get subtitles to work directly. I can use subtitles with recorded programs. I get the backend to run ccextractor (Releases · CCExtractor/ccextractor · GitHub) after recording every program, and kodi can then show subtitles from resultant .srt file automatically. For live TV we use the TV directly (not via kodi) as this method only works with recordings. I don’t know if this will be useful in your situation - I never managed to get kodi to show subtitles directly from the .ts file, only after extraction with ccextractor.

I use TVheadend backend and have no problem showing subtitles on RTE and BBC … have not tested other channels.
All CE on backend and at TVs.
So not a Kodi/CE problem it seems.
