Playback stutter with enabled subtitles

Hello,

I’m running Ugoos AM6b+ using latest CPM build T4 and CE21-ng Nightly 20240804 on different cards. On both builds I often experience medium-to-heavy stutter when subtitles are enabled (I watch plenty of foreign movies and TV shows, so have to use them).
I have found some topics regarding this issue for older Kodi versions with mixed experiences from people on how to fix it and the tradeoffs (higher temps, etc), but can’t seem to find related topics and solutions for Omega-based CE.

atm, it seems like switching UI to 720p resolution mostly fixes it (or at least the minimizes it to relatively unnoticeable level), though UI is not very pleasant on the 4K screen on this setting.

I would be grateful for some feedback regarding your experiences with subtitle performance and how you mitigate the issue if you are experiencing it. Thank you!

I run the build T4A on AM6B+ and have NO stutter with subs enabled; the same with all .ng versions. Display is set to 2160p/50Hz and I don’t use any “subtitle fix” in advancedsettings.xml.
Quite contrary when I use any .no version - they all have video stutter when subtitles are enabled.

thx for the feedback. that’s quite interesting…
I will try to play around with different resolutions and see what comes out of it, so far I tested only 1080p at 23.9, 50 and 60, all seem to produce stutter in most files when subs are displayed.
I also did not try any fix with xmls, as they all seem to be suboptimal (esp. temp-wise).

nope, i use ng-builds on AM6, for me it’s just image stutter when subs come up. Most annoying stuff that it doesn’t always happen, like it’s caused by a combination of subtitle type, container type, codec and video mode.

yesterday stutter happened again. seems like it’s not related directly to slow performance during rendering, but to some sort of sync issues. I paused several times during the video, at some point the stutters began when subs where showing, player debug info showed VsyncOff ~ -37-40ms. I performed a seek back and stutters disappeared, VsyncOff became -16ms (pausing did not fix it, only seek). I will try to capture logs if it happens again.

I have exactly that too, I haven’t tested with different media but atm I’m watching Lost (1080p remux framestor) with pgs subs or srt and when I pause and continue sometimes I need to rewind to get it to play correctly again, or when I start for first time it’s not in sync, does not always happen.

running UI at 4K 60Hz.

FYI - What I observe with UI at 1080 24 then not noticing issues, 4K 24 then has some stutter in a repeating pattern, with 1080 24 content.

hard for me to run ui at 24 hehe, atm 4K 60 but will maybe try 1080 120 if I replace my soundbar.

I’m using UI at 1080p@60, my fix before was to use 720p@60, in that case I haven’t seen any problems, but the UI clarity was not the best on a big 4K screen)

Is the issue still present in last nightly? Amlogic-ne or Amlogic-no. There was a issue found with DRM and Kodi.

are you referencing this commit in the xbmc or something else:
[Revert “CDRMAtomic: add support for using DRM_MODE_ATOMIC_NONBLOCK”]
If that’s it, then I still I had the stutter with it a couple of times.
Or is this something else only for NE/NO builds (I’m using NG)?
