Problems with usb drive recognition

i have an external usb hdd drive. this was recognized perfect a couple of weeks ago. i cant remember when it started but it started with the behaviour that i had to wait for about 2-5 minutes until the popup appeared that a device is plugged in. now it needs not only longer but sometimes i have to reboot to get that. now i rebooted, but still i can not access /media/My Book
anyone an idea whats going on? smartmontools say the device is perfectly fine and it also works instantly on my workstation.
