Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is out!

taking pictures from python on an odroid, Google (python uvc capture).

Just because there is less hand holding doesn’t mean the device can’t do it, and possibly do it better.

Well said. personally i am a fan of most of these devices and have multiples of each of them but they all kinda have different purposes and things they do well while others they don’t.

With that said, heres the concern for me looking forward as far as the Raspberries go Strictly in the context of Media players like Kodi.

We all know of whats going on with Kodi looking to 19 but lets look even at what was acheived on 18 and the areas that they worked on. Currently Kodi’s is trying to conform to a common GPU stack amongst a other things. One of those areas is moving a lot more stuff over under the V4L2 support of which Broadcom the last time i looked does NOT support, that coupled with Proprietary decoding along with a few other things are not just issues that can go unaddressed. This was all actually in the Fosdem report Kodi did on Linux and Embedded systems in 2018 while moving to Leia.

With that in mind looking forward to Matrix (19) i think that the Raspberry is going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to development in those areas.

I think everything has its place and without the small amount of exceptions some people playing around may have that from a more center part of the mainstream market i am not sure how many of the plug and players type of buyers that the Raspberrie’s are the right choice even with the low price point they have established.

just to be clear tho… i am not arguing for one side or the other as i have most of them anyways.

Interesting analysis of thermals… Take home message is a heatsink on its own is useless, this thing also needs a fan … And make certain you use real thermal paste.

Feel free to use it. I have not advertised to dismiss RPi’s. Just saying that other SBC’s target the same market. But they cannot fully complete against the Raspberry community which is huge.

That’s why I say it again the Pi4 is a great product and it will be huge especially against cheap AML boxes.

Google: “what is camera serial interface”
Also Google: “CSI vs USB cameras”

You didn’t say csi, and camera interface could mean any interface used to attach a camera. Was only trying to suggest the appropriate terms to use if you did want to look up how to take pictures with the most commonly used way to interface a camera with an odroid board.

I also wasn’t trying to imply that you needed hand holding, was just making the point that just because they don’t provide the same amount of intro level how-to guides that it didn’t mean the board was in anyway lacking in ability compared to the pi for hardware projects, and in fact the odroid boards do have capabilities the pi does not have for some hardware projects.

I seriously considered a Pi 4 but the thermal issues have put a huge dent in that idea.

And the poor 4k playback out of the box makes it look as if it was released too early.

And realistically, once you add in the necessary accessories, it’s value isn’t quite as good as it first appears.

As new products go, the N2 does look better and better in comparison.

2GB R-Pi 4 £44
PSU £8
add a real cheap HDMI adapter so existing cable can be used (really should buy suitable cable) and the total cost to me is €60 plus delivery costs which are usually high.

For that I have a bare board that will power up and show on screen.

No case (and those cheap ones are really cheap looking also)
No display
No remote … last Pi I had I bought a Flirc and recycled an old remote.

Then, although I do not need 4K, I still need a good heatsink (maybe fan too) … remember the R-Pi 4 does not do HW decoding of MPEG2 or VC1 and there is no way to enable it.
(see link below)

If I was a more casual buyer I would go for a Kit … all needed bundled in together which should be cheaper.
Kit I looked at costs £70 … €78 plus delivery … and still no remote and no display.
https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi-kits-and-bundles/products/raspberry-pi-starter-kit?variant=30817948433

What would it cost to add a remote? I have no idea … and no I have no CEC functionality.

I reckon by the time I got it all delivered I would be looking at more than €100 … I have not looked at the new FLirc case to see if that would suffice as heatsink as well as case …

Yes, the R-Pi 4 is for hobbyists.
As such it is a great product with marvellous community support.

As a media client and/or server it is overpriced and lacking in some essential areas.

I will continue, for as long as feasible, to use cheap Chinese devices which come with
OS
Display
Remote
PSU
Case
and generally do all that I need for media use. (Presently using €35 devices)

Cheap in this case is €50 delivered.
Half the price of the R-Pi 4 by my calcs.

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/config-txt/codeclicence.md

On the Raspberry Pi 4, the hardware codecs for MPEG2 or VC1 are permanently disabled and cannot be enabled even with a licence key; on the Pi 4, thanks to its increased processing power compared to earlier models, MPEG2 and VC1 can be decoded in software via applications such as VLC. Therefore, a hardware codec licence key is not needed if you’re using a Pi 4.

What about watching a Live HD TV channel for some time without a heatsink …

@brimur how do you show this video infos ?

Press letter o to view the info on screen in Kodi.

Someone should update that interactive tutorial which is completed by only 65 users!

@MusikJunk might add Panic! prefix?

They should ask what is BTC :money_mouth_face:, but it could take a while until

you change your mind about how you look at things, and see there might be another way to look at it that you have not been shown.

For more than a century, people all over the world have been taught in their schools and universities that a slight degree of inflation is always necessary for economic growth. However, this very inflation results in what could be referred to as a recession every decade or so.

That aside:

In La La Land we like things like PoE and network boot.
