Report about Amlogic S905X4 HK1 RBOX X4

That is a very good question. I have not been really comparing the two systems, since I have been playing with the HK1 exclusively.

Right now, there is issue with a closed caption not displaying properly on this new hk1 device. Tomorrow I will be comparing with the b-link which is running the X3 SoC.

But right now, I am very impressed with the X4.

I know that did not answer your question, but I plan on doing some evaluations down the road for performance.

First time post. Greetings all. Looking into going the coreelec route for high quality audio and video playback. Looking over this thread, device looks promising.

Can someone please confirm s/pdif works and plays audio straight from device to avr with coreelec, would be greatly appreciated. Only test I’ve seen so far is s/pdif from tv connected via hdmi rather than straight from the HK1.

Cheers
Chris

At this point I am not as positive on the this device as @clarkss12. If you want CoreElec a dedicated Amlogic SBC makes more sense to me. Maybe if recovery firmware is available and if you could install to emmc a 4GB 64B machine is definitely reasonably price but at this point neither is guaranteed. From the Android side it is definitely inferior to cheap Android TV devices that have Widevine L1 and support Dolby audio.

Anyway I was not able to get audio out of the a/v jack but it might need a different plug. Testing s/pdif I couldn’t get audio in Android or CE.

Thanks for testing. Ouch, so spdif is a no show with current testing? Could clarkss12 test from his system?

If I were to go another device, would the Minix Neo T5 be fully supported? I had a quick look and only the latest model from Minix had a dedicated device tree/CE image. The T5 fits my price range, I’m only interested in 4K video along with ability to pass non-video hi res audio via toslink.

Cheers for the help.

Been years since I used the s/pdif, so would have to dig through my misc. cables to find one… If I get the motivation to test it, it maybe awhile… Too hard for this old man to climb around, and behind, the entertainment center…

I guess it all depends on what you use it for. I have most of the Google Certified boxes/sticks, including the 2017 Nvidia Shield. But, NONE of my devices support all the audio and video codecs. My shield does NOT support Dolby Vision, but does passthrough all of the HD audio codecs. The TiVo Stream 4k passes through the Dolby Vision, but NOT any of the HD audio codecs.
So what is the use of having a 4K TV that supports Dolby Vision and all of the other HDR and HDR +. And an audio receiver that supports all of the audio codecs, if you don’t have a player that uses those functions…

Besides, my Kodi data is more than 6 gigs, so NONE Of these Official streamers have enough internal storage to install Kodi.

Right now, this HK1 is getting closer to MY holy grail (for my purposes). Of course, most people want a media streamer for their online content. I think having ones own media is dying.
That is just my 2cents.

We’re only starting this journey, spdif doesn’t work now but can be added later, depending on the device. It’s to early to call.

Then this is good news for you

I was reading that a couple of days ago. But, from what I understood, it will only be available in China.

Agreed and I appreciate all the work the CE team has done so far. I am very excited about these new family of devices for CE and moving to new kernels, even if it means my N2 workhorse will die on the newer kernel.

Right now there’s no clear path for the N2/N2+ and the others. Don’t kill it too quicky.

The new Beelink GT-King II will be an awesome machine for dual booting.
The CoreELEC team has worked miracles getting the new Amlogic SoC’s to work with CoreELEC.
Great job!!!

No problem. Will wait and see what comes of this little unit. Appreciate yours and other’s efforts so far. Hopefully spdif gets support down the line.
A friend of mine who lives an age away from me has this HK1, he turned me onto this device. A few hours ago I convinced him to try spdif to a receiver.
I can confirm spdif works at least from the android OS on his box.
He’s not interested in CE Kodi so that’s as far as his help will go unfortunately.

So I have here new dtbs to test.
All for 2g/4g and 100mbit/1gbit. I also changed the gpio of the spdif output so it might working now as well. Please test and report which device does work with what dtb and what functions are working or not working now. spdif, eth LAN, WLAN, USB, uSD,…

sc2_s905x4_2g.dtb (85.3 KB)
sc2_s905x4_2g_1gbit.dtb (85.4 KB)
sc2_s905x4_4g.dtb (85.3 KB)
sc2_s905x4_4g_1gbit.dtb (85.4 KB)

Convinced my friend to test coreelec spdif. He noted that it indeed works with sc2_s905x4_4g_1gbit.dtb. He did a quick test of some hi res audio I shared for him and found that it passed 96khz but it was stuck at 16bit instead of 24 on his receiver. Wav files and flac files, so passthrough and lpcm decode stuck at 16bit.
He can’t test video surround sound as his receiver is 2.0.

As for LAN, his works on android but said the menu switch to turn it on in CE doesn’t go into the on position. Looks like another with LAN issue.
He has the gigabit model.

Hope this helps.

I tried the two 4g dtbs and neither worked. There is a slight difference since the light on the switch stays on with the 100Mb version even when Kodi has no networking. Also I couldn’t add my hub eth1 while the eth0 cable was connected.

with the 1000Mb version like before it goes off duing boot and I get

meson6-dwmac fdc00000.ethernet: no reset control found

Hello, please could you recommend me some good CE supported box with S905X4 (eg. from Aliexpress) with 1GBit network. I want to build a small ultra low power NAS for one USB HDD with 4K Kodi and HDMI CEC support and I think this platform might be perfect for me. Thanks for the advice.

Tested this new DTB >> [sc2_s905x4_4g_1gbit.dtb.
LAN works perfectly:: tested on a 75 Mb/s video…

WiFi:: Router about 30’ direct line of sight.
WiFi 2.4 Ghz, will NOT play UHD or HD videos
WiFi 5Ghz will NOT play UHD videos, But WILL play HD videos.
Under Android, WiFi performance is the same

All USB ports show 5volts.

Did not test the Spdif output.

This DTB and the prior one that I used, powers the device back on after a power off…
