Samsung OLEDs without Dolby Vision

Hi, when shopping for new TV I had originally ignored the Samsung OLEDs as they don’t do DV and lots of my content is DV, playing though my Homatics Box R 4K.

But maybe it’s not that big of a deal?

HDR10+ content availablity is minimal and would Homatics box even play it? They seem to often be files with both DV and HDR10+.

That leaves regular HDR10 which isn’t ideal but I suspect some will say can’t always notice the difference?

Thanks in advance, just wanted to see if should only focus on the LG and Sony OLED TV’s

It depends on your priorities and what you will be happy with. If you buy a Samsung you can become a DV hater :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: and say it is over hyped and unnecessary. I have noticed the difference between HDR10 and DV on my LG OLED (G1 so it’s a few years old now) HDR is generally brighter in the highlights and overall, DV looks more natural and is still bright where it matters. I watch TV in a dark room so I don’t need it super bright. But a lot depends on the TV’s image processing and I’m sure Samsung’s is very good.
I still can’t understand Samsungs logic, surely paying $3 on DV licencing per TV would give them more sales.
I wouldn’t buy a OLED without DV.

Many thanks for your input

Yes the Homatics box plays it, mine does.

Samsung are one of the developers of HDR10+ so I guess it’s in there interest to push that format and not DV.

And it looks like HDR10+ is finally taking off via streaming and in AV1. It’s a rarity but I’m watching a TV series at the moment that is encoded in x265 HDR10+. But for Blu-rays I think DV is still a must.

Not an Amazon show by any chance, they only support HDR10+, no DV.

It’s actually surprising just how many physical UHD disk releases don’t contain DV and only have HDR10. I’d say at least half my UHD disk collection is HDR10 or HDR10+ only.

Given huge brightness and color boosts on OLEDs this year, I decided it is time to upgrade from LG C1 and after reading about all the issues G5 had at the time of release (some are still present), I was really tempted to get an S95F from Samsung, but other than the lack of Dolby Vision I am really not a fan of raised blacks on QD-OLED with any light present in the same room. Though in the end the decision was made mainly because I really didn’t want to lose Dolby Vision support after doing some comparisons of HDR and DoVi content on C1. DoVi presents dark scenes better and colors in general in my opinion with more details and better blacks at the same time, but, yes, you have to compare it side-by-side to notice the difference most of the time. So it’s your choice, but I personally, would probably not buy a TV without Dolby Vision support unless that TV is noticeably better in other aspects.

Since all issues LG G5 had/has are related only to HDR there is a simple fix I use on it. I convert all HDR_HLG, HDR10 and HDR10+ with Dolby VS10 engine to Dolby Vision, which works perfectly, without any issues, on LG G5.

When you buy a premium top tier TV you shouldn’t need to work around any issues, it should just work.

I use VS10 to watch DV, not to work arround issues this TV had (does not any more, after updates fixed HDR) because HDR does not appeal to me as DV does, especially on this LG G5 display..

Well that’s not what your post said

Hehe, it says exsactly that, I use it to watch (all HDR formats in) DV. The only thing missing in my statement is “all HDR formats” which is self explanatory.

Since LG does not suport HDR10+, VS10 takes care of that, by converting it to DV. And since DV on this TV is looking fabulous, it would be a sin not to convert the rest of HDR formats to DV.
