Ugoos AM6B Plus: Doubt about updating to the latest version of CoreELEC

I have CoreELEC Matrix installed on the internal memory of my Ugoos AM6B Plus and I’d like to know the exact steps to upgrade to the latest version of CoreELEC. I’ve read on the forum that upgrading from one version to another (without a clean install) is a bad idea…

Just going from Kodi matrix to Kodi piers is not advised much less CE because database upgrades and addons will likely break between major versions, you’re trying to jump 3 (nexus, omega, piers).
Do the fresh install.

I had the same issue when I got my AM6B+ and installed the dual-boot firmware.

The CE version that comes with the firmware is some 9.x version based on Kodi Leia (18) if I remember correctly.

Anyway, I upgraded it to CE 21, but without skipping any versions. I.e. start by putting the .tar file for version 19 in the Updates folder, reboot and then continue with the .tar for the next version until you arrive at CE21. That worked just fine for me.

It’s not advised so if bugs surface you’ll only know the origin with a clean install. But it’s possible, of course.

What I’m not quite sure about is how to do a clean install when CoreELEC is already installed on the eMMC.

I suppose I’d first have to delete it, then do the installation on a USB drive, and then install it again on the eMMC.

Is that right?

You can just create a USB and boot from it to start. That way you can test it out and leave your current install untouched.

You can then boot into either. Just shutdown remove the USB (Or insert it) and power on to switch between the two.

If you are happy with the new version on the USB, you can run the tool to migrate the USB installation to eMMC.

Thanks. The advice was very helpful.

In fact, I updated to Piers_alpha3 and had to downgrade because some add-ons were causing errors with my Python version.

I’ll keep using CoreELEC 22 on my USB drive until it works properly, and I’ll stick with version 21 on my eMMC in the meantime.

As I said, thanks a million for the help.
