X96 Max (S905X2 and USB HDD)

Hello.

I have X96 Max 4/32Gb (with revision R) running the latest stable CE 9.2.1.

I have external HDD (with PSU) and noticed that it is working very slow, dd says it’s only 2 Mb/sec.
I have tried to optimize the disk, check it’s smart and checked every block. Everything is fine.
On Linux and Windows benchmarks show 34-35 Mb/sec (connected USB2.0), but when I connect the disk to CE - the speed is like it was before, nothing changes.

I have taken another disk (2.5" without PSU), checked it as well, reformatted, connected to CE, and when I try to copy something to it - it hangs.

I thought that the disk is feeling bad, but both disks looks fine on two different computers.
And they act very strange in CE.

The log is showing the second disk, and now I hear clicks coming from that disk. Not sure it’s broken or caused by CE.

I have downgraded Android firmware to 8.1 (I have newer revision and even my ethernet was not working).

Then I have taken the disk which does not tick or something, and it fully verified and checked.

I just copy one big file to it, and speed is going very good, about 25-35 Mb/sec, but then just stuck and I see messages in the dmesg log.

So you see results are pretty random… Sometimes it shows like 60 Mb/sec, then stops for seconds, then resumes copy.

Is it possible that problem can be caused by bad power supply of a box? Even if HDD has own PSU and it was working 15+ hours without problems?

I could not find appropriate PSU for a change.
But could find a UBS3.0 hub with external power 2A.
I have connected both HDDs to it, and plugged into USB3.0 port.

No sounds or ticks from 2.5" disk, but still if it let the box idle, I see “reset” messages all the times coming, every 10-30 seconds sometimes for BOTH disks.

Can it be something with usb controller in the box or something like that? Or better to find another PSU for the box?

Looks like some compatibility and SoC issue.
If it’s repeatable on Android then it’s better to ask vendor.
It was some similar issue on N2, but it was fixed by vendor and amlogic and already included in CE.
So I think we couldn’t help in that case… ask vendor for help.

Also try this hdd on different box and different SoC if possible.

If Hdd have PS then it doesn’t look like PS issue

Both HDDs are WD, one with PSU, one without PSU. Both were working hard on another computers to check blocks and so on.
Having USB resets for both HDDs.

I mean not PC, but another amlogic box…
I have WD 3TB HDD connected via dock station on N2 and it works without issues up to 80MB/s

From latest log it looks like kernel crash…
Upload original dtb to check if sdio speed is slower or not… I will check in free time this week

But it also could be some amlogic bug as I said before

Interesting that with USB flash, connected to USB3.0 there are no problems, works fast and no errors at all.

Not CE, but Android one
I just downloaded Android img for your box and extracted dtb… sdio speed is the same… and this trace is not related with usb issue. So couldn’t help more with this box.
Ask vendor for fixes… It could be some amlogic issue in USB driver

I have an idea that there are problems with USB2, while USB3 (not port, but connection) is fine.
