3D Frame Packed (MVC) output with CoreELEC?

I did provide logs some time ago here in this thread, but I can retry on the weekend (am away until Friday) and update :-). I did test with fresh installs of CE though, no addons, nothing, also straight connection to an LG E6, so not much in the way other than the box itself. But its good to hear, that it has no issues for other people, that’s good to know.

Try new nightlies & let us know if issue is still there.

@anon88882978 Thanks for the detailed explanation. My friend quickly sold the Zidoo box.I have the Blu Ray disc of Gravity, so I will convert it and see if I can live with the errors if not, I will keep an eye out for a Dune box on eBay.

Hey,

Ist just came home and tested directly. It still crashes every 3 to 15 min randomly back to the home screen. I am using the latest nightly with some addons/skin and in my testing today I had my AV receiver (3D capable) inbetween the Ugoos and the TV.

In any case, since the behavior is exactly the same as like 2 months ago, where I tested with a fresh install, no addons, no skins directly attached to my LG E6, I don’t think, that the EDID, skin or addons are the problem.

This is the crash log: https://paste.coreelec.org/SoftieTalkies

I was running the movie from my Server via Samba, directly mounted in the underlying Linux during boot. However, I also tried this with files from internal storage last time with the same crashes, so I don’t think, that this is the problem either. Also 4k, HDR, DoVi and anything else I throw at it is no issue via a mounted Samba folder.

I am happy to try out more things, but at a glance, I can’t even see, why CE crashes in the first place from the log. If you or a dev could point out, what the problem could be or what additional logs could be beneficial, I am happy to help :-). Maybe, my Ugoos is just faulty?

Try these settings:

& whitelists all resolutions with ‘sbs’ at the end.

Hi @Ferdinand of anyone have a sample m2ts 3D file, I tried this method but no go via usb directly to an lg c6. Thanks

Hey,

I did exactly that, no dice. Still crashes the same way. All settings set identical and all resolutions with sbs in it are whitelisted.

Can you send a snippet of the file or is it any 3D file?

It is every 3D MVC file unfortunately. No matter if its in MKV, iso, BDMV container…

The BDMV are straight rips of a disc, no changes whatsoever, with MakeMKV. The MKVs are remuxed from theses BDMVs, again, no changes to the streams, just repackaged as MKV. Files play fine in forced 2D (ignoring the MVC stream).

I am beginning to suspect my box just being faulty… Don’t have a second one to try though.

Hi :-),

a question for you: You said, your AM6b+ works fine in 3D for full movies with MKVs (basically my setup, but on a TV, not a projector). Are you using normal CE (latest nightly) or any specific version? Or a CPM version? I am asking, because @Mozy (post from Sept. 21) suggested, that they also had instabilites, which were fixed by either using an old version of CE (20240817) or switching to CPM T8 and everything seemed fine.

Im on cpm A10 & also tested its T8 and 3D always worked. It’s looking like a faulty unit as only yours is not working. Let see if @anon88882978 can confirm. The devs could help but they’re so busy with the hd audio sync issues & developing NO, NE & so many boxes with other issues. I hope we get to the bottom of this for you.

3D MVC works for me on nightly and CPM.

I dont know where to put this and have choosen this thread.
Best Wishes for Christmas and Happy New Year to everybody .
Particularly to Portisch and the excellent CE Team. Thanks again for your patience and your works.

Ditto. Love using my AM6B+ w/CE, including enjoying 3D w/it. CE is the best thing to happen to Kodi :).

Thank you CE devs, appreciate all you guys do… Happy Holidays.

With latest stable CE-NG on Ugoos AM6B+, I’m experiencing issues with 3D MVC playback… starts fine, but suddenly stops playing like 15-20mins into the movie. The files play back fine with my Dune HD Real Vision 4K Plus. Anyone else?

Hey @anon88882978,

I believe @brennbaer reported the exact same problems.

As you and maybe all in this thread know, I am also having issues for a long time now. My issues are similar to the ones you are describing: Depending on the movie, CE stutters, freezes and kicks back to the home screen anywhere from 3 to 20 mins of total playtime in the movie, no matter if you let it run continuously or skip somewhere.

I know I sound like a broken record on this, as I have talked about this maybe 3 or 4 times now. However I spent the last two weekends testing a lot of things, and I mean a lot. Alas to no avail however, as I could not resolve the issue. I quickly summarize my current thinking and what I tested and did not work, maybe it helps someone. All my tests were done with fresh installs of CE, direct connection to my 4k passive 3D TV (LG E6 55 inch).

All was based on the hypothesis, that CE 3D MVC playback works in principle, as others in this thread reported no issues whatsoever. I have experienced this stuttering/freezing issue in any and every CE-NG nightly, also in the CPM builds and frankly, it has never worked for me at all beyond these first 3-20min depending on the movie.

Observation: It often crashes frame-perfectly, but sometimes within a few seconds, sometimes even half a minute window for a specific movie file, so it seems to not be completely deterministic.

What I tested and did not work:

Potential culprit Harware:

  • Bought a second Ugoos AM6b+ to rule out hardware defect → Exactly same issue on new box, this was my strongest suspicion
  • Changed HDMI cable(s) to certified one(s) → Same issues
  • Tried to manipulate the EDID via SSH and restarting Kodi as well as buying a HDFury Dr. HDMI to inject different 3D capable EDIDs to rule out my TV’s EDID → Same issues
  • Tried local files as well as via network → No changes
  • Tried shorter files to rule out filesize → No changes as long as file was long enough to trigger crash
  • Tried SD card and eMMC for CE → No changes

Potential culprit Movie-Files:

  • Tried different ripping software (default MakeMKV), tried DVDFab ISO, MKV and BDMV → Same issues
  • Trying to move the MVC stream below the AVC stream in the stream order in TS Muxer and create new ISO (this was mentioned in I think 2018 for simmilar issues in a different context) → No changes
  • Trying to recreate/insert the SEI and VUI data as well as SPS/PPS for the streams in TS Muxer → No changes
  • Tried MKV, ISO (only movie and full disc incl. menu), BDMV → No changes

And lastly potential culprit CE itself:

  • Tampering with the marginal buffer in the parameters of the MVC decoder (going deep and into not well understood territory here, but I became desperate) via SSH (default: 8), below 4 and above 12 becomes very unstable (this was done due to a forum post and this being an issus with h265 decoding a while back, where the resulting behavior was similiar enough to give it a test) → inbetween same issues
  • Tried at least 10-15 different CE builds, from the very early 3D ones to the latest nightlies and CPM builds → All same issue
  • Tried virtually any setting under the sun, from whitelisting all SBS/TAB/FRP resolutions to forcing different bit depths and YUV4xx, allowing for setting the frame rate on startup or not → No changes
  • Changing the buffer/caching of CE itself under Services/Caching → Appears to have an effect on the issue, increasing the buffer from the default 20 MB up to 512 MB led to a much earlier stuttering/crashing, so interesting behavior indeed although counterintuitive; lowering the buffer or disabling it however did not increase the time to crash.

I went through all logs I could get my hands on, but couldn’t decipher why it crashes in the first place. At some point the stream stalles, the MVC decoder seems to reinitialize and the buffer is flushed and then it either continues a few seconds until freezing again, going to a black screen or some green artifact mess and then crashes back to home screen. I noticed that the log output sometimes becomes garbled, but this could be normal due to a freezing software? Have no experience, if this is normal. Could also point to some memory corruption which then affects the log files written? Don’t know.

I gave up yesterday (funny that you have problems now one day after) and bought a Zidoo Z9X Pro 4k, which, as well as the older Dunes have Realtek chipsets and apparently play MVC natively from their Android OSes without know issues.

If I remember anything else I tested, I will update here. I kind of accepted the fact, that it will not work (for me) with the Ugoos and that i am mostly alone with this problem, so not worth investigating from the devs as there are bigger fish to fry. I briefly entertained the thought to dive into the code myself (either CE or ffmpeg) and try to get a software decoder up for MVC. But this would be (for me at least) a monumental task which would take months at least. Time I dont have right now.

Wow, thank you for the detailed reply. Thought it may have been my box. Hope a dev who worked on 3D, believe @Portisch replies.

I also ordered a Z9X Pro yesterday. Already have a Dune Real Vision 4K Plus, but wanted another 3D player/backup as AM6B+ w/CE had been that for me. Also have a cheapo TOX3 box coming from China to see if the same issue exists on S905X4.

Let me check on OSMC forum to see if any Vero V users are seeing issues. Believe CE and OSMC use the same, or similar mechanism for 3D. Same underlying code.

Edit: Doesn’t look like this issue is being reported w/Vero & OSMC.

Looks like we need to give up on CE for 3D :(. Tried 21.2 NG on two of my AB6B+ units, and both now don’t work for 3D MVC playback (unsure if it’s the same for SBS and TAB). About 4 mins into the movie, playback abruptly stops. Doesn’t matter which title. Seems like there isn’t any interest in 3D… back to Dune and Zidoo.

It’s a shame to have such a good feature

Because 3D is dead in home cinema.
Just the TVs need to break down…

When there is no clear instruction how to reproduce with what sample what happen there will be no time invest, no.

We are not here to try everything and don’t have even time to invest in a dead horse. Maybe one day again…
