Amlogic S905X4

The Ugoos X4 devices have been released recently. I was thinking about getting one. That would be my first device of such type - also the first time I would be using CoreELEC, so I’m wondering how the usual procedure is with new devices:

  • Will CoreELEC support these devices only if someone from the team decides to buy one?
    or
  • Is the team approaching the manufacturers after release with the request to send them samples? (Someone on the FreakTab forum received one, it seems)
    or
  • Are these devices supported already, maybe, because they are similar to some other supported devices?
  1. Normally no;
  2. We approach or we are approached;
  3. No

There’s no support at the time for S905X4. It will come in the future, possibly (and probably).

Does anyone have an inside info on a possible S905X5 SoC. It has been quite a while since the S905X4 was released and the VVC/H.266 video codec was ratified 16 months ago so i was hoping that we might get a new SoC that can hardware decode that. Maybe arm cortex a510 cores too, those provide a 35% performance increase.

I bought three of these without looking at the forum to see if it was supported. They’ve been sitting around for three months unused. If someone from development wants one I’d be willing to donate it, since I’ve been using coreelec for years and I’ve never donated to the project monetarily. I know you guys need more than just the physical box, but if it’s helpful let me know.

X96 905X4 is available in China now, with local price at around $43 for 4+64 spec. I checked local forum for user’s review, shipped with Android 11 with of course ugly launcher and without google suite.
No hardware spec or teardown as of now, X96 series have a bad reputation for changing wifi/ethernet/BT chips under the hood, so might be some kinks for CE support in the future?

FYI:
S905X4 (SC2) maybe do have a locked hardware video decoder and therefor it can not be used without the necessary TDK/SDKs by signing NDA. As CE is a open-source community this might happen never. We got the device booting and Kodi GUI shows up and sound works normally. This is current status we have and the development is on hold now until we can find more information.

Status by 11/2021 if you want to use CE on the device:

DO NOT BUY S905X4 DEVICES AS THEY ARE MIGHT BE NEVER SUPPORTED AT ALL

What about S905W2?

Tvboxs with this CPU are cheaper, but also support the new video codec AV1.

It’s based on G12A and do not support AV1 in hardware.

There are ARM Cortex A35 and Mali-G31 in description. It’s not S905W4. Wifi maybe amlogic.

As always said here and I have been beaten to point it out. We always support a new SoC because major SBC manufacturers supported us. Those cheap vendors are useless for us they don’t help and don’t care.
This time SBC vendors didn’t bring out new boards and as you see there is nothing possible. Think about that next time before you buy the cheapest of the cheapest.

And as S905X4 is dead I will close this Thread.

Greetings,

I’ve been waiting for Ugoos (due to their reputation) to release the X4 family devices using S905X4 (due to AV1 support), but now that those are out, it appears that S905X4 is dead and won’t be supported at all due to a locked video driver or something.

Now I’m a bit lost and would like to ask, what box / SoC with AV1 support should I look at, which is supported by CE? Any recommendations?

Get a SBC with S922 Soc, they can easily decode software the AV-1 format.

As a CE user I want to appreciate team CE’s great work and efforts!
This is really good news! So maybe I will buy a S905X4 in the near future when my X96MP broke down :kissing_heart:

I personally would not go with S905X4, it will come only with locked bootloader. So no internal install is possible at all. But booting from µSD and USB is possible.

Will the coming x4 support generic x4 boxes?

Apparently the tanix x4 box comes pre rooted, so the bootloader should be unlocked.
