Amlogic S928X

No, S5, S928X, Amlogic.
We are in direct contact with Tencent and try our best to get support for CoreELEC.

Is the s928x really an upgrade to the A311D2? It only has 5 cores, vs 8. The s928x has one A76 core, but the A311D2 has 4xA73.

It’s single core performance is going to be better than the A311D2 but the multicore performance is worse.

It depends on your use case. Right now, for media center, we have a problem with some part of the audio (true-hd, an example) in A311D2. If all works in S928X that’s an upgrade. If it’s the -J SoC you have DV support, another upgrade.
In the other hand, the A311D2 is a “workhorse”.

Oh I was talking generally, not specifically CE. I had thought of the A311D2 as being the successor to the S922X, and that the S928X was to be the successor to the A311D2. But the S928X seems to be one step forward and one step backward. If had to choose between the two the S928X isn’t a clear winner, and I’d personally lean more towards the A311D2.

The S928X feels more like the successor to the S905X4, even though there is already an X5.

S928X does have Valhall GPU, not Bifrost anymore.
This one of the main changes.

The s928x is definitely not the generational leap i thought it would be,disappointed it only has 1 a76 core aswell, but i my use case corelecc seems to only use 2 cores the most

Strange it doesn’t support h.266 but s905x5 does.

Are there any early builds for the AM8 that I can try? I tried using the 20.2 NE build and the 21.0 nightly, with the dtb extracted from android (dts attached below). The latter doesn’t seem to work, while the former seems to just be stuck at the amlogic boot logo. Any debugging/info that I could provide?

devicetree.dts (120.9 KB)

No, still at work.

My device is still on the road.

Where did you guys buying those?

Never mind, ugoos.store have them for 180€

Having had the device for about a week now, I thought I’d post on some of the issues I encountered with it. I hope that newer builds from Ugoos/or builds of coreelec can address some of these.

  1. 4K 120Hz: There seem to be some issues with the included HDMI cable when set to 4K 120Hz. Sometimes when powering on the device/waking from sleep, I just get a black screen and need to power cycle. Changing to an Amazonbasics cable seemed to fix this. With this cable, I was able to get 4K 120Hz with YCbCr 444 10 bit with HDR enabled, so I presume this means it supports the full spec of HDMI 2.1?
  2. Dolby Vision at 4K 120Hz doesn’t work. There is a info in the settings that says that dolby vision won’t work at 100Hz or 120 Hz display modes currently. Launching a dolby vision video (with kodinerds kodi build) when set to 4K120 results in the device going to HDR mode and the image being divided into 2 halves (left and right) with different/weird colours for each. setting the resolution down to 4K60 or 4K24 results in dolby vision workng. The wording in setting seemed to indicate that “dolby vision is unsupported currently”, so maybe a new sw update will fix this? The reason I bring up 120Hz a lot is that you’d not need to use AFR with this refresh rate, as 120 is an integer multiple of all common refresh rates.
  3. Bluetooth Issues: There were reports on 4pda about 2.4Ghz wifi not working properly when a USB 3 device is connected. I think bluetooth also uses the same frequency. I plugged in a USB 3.0 flash drive and felt like I was having issues with the remote sending/recognizing inputs. Changing over to a USB 2.0 flash drive seemed to improve this issue. However, even without any USB devices plugged in, there are times where the remote feels a bit sluggish and I’m able to completely prevent it from working if I block the remote with my body. This is probably the most irritating issue for me so far.
  4. Non 16:9 videos on youtube (2:1 or 2.21:1 for example) get decoded weirdly. I’ve noticed this with both Vp9 and H264, on kodi and smartyoutubenext. The screen gets split into 2 halves (left and right), and the video on the right side appears to be vertically sifted down by a certain percent.

Other than the bluetooth issue, the rest aren’t too dealbreaking for me right now and I hope that newer software fixes these. The device has been flawless otherwise and seeing android/kodi run so smoothly at 120Hz on my TV has been a very enjoyable experience.

I’m about to order Ugoos AM8 to replace my AM6B plus.
Does AM8 also support Dolby Vision “FEL” like AM6B plus? Can anyone confirm this with Novaplayer or Monsoon’s kodi build?

The Bluetooth remote control works perfectly for me, even in gyro mode, the mouse pointer works without any dropouts. Even if I put my body in front of it.
It may be a stupid question, but have you installed the antennas?
I am really very happy with this box. Everything works directly in Kodi DTS, DTS-HD, and after I set RAW instead of IEC in the passthrough settings also True-HD Atmos, without any dropouts.
I can’t test Dolby Vision because I have a Samsung OLED.
I’ve had the Ugoos box for 3 days now and I’m really very satisfied, and as I said everything works perfectly and the performance is great, even in Android 11

The bluetooth issues are intermittent. I’m sitting on a couch in front of the TV and try to place the remote behind my back. Sometimes is works fine, but sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes blocking the front of the remote completely prevents it from working, while other times it works fine. I do have the antennas plugged in.

@Mark If you have a short clip I can test, please link me to that.

You can download BL_EL.mkv here.

For test, you need to use android apps such as Novaplayer or
Monsoon’s kodi build.

Just play the “BL_EL.mkv” file(do not seek or fastforward) and check this woman visible (she starts to appear at 84 sec). Thank you.
fel

With monsoon’s kodi build, the woman doesn’t appear in BL_EL.mkv. My TV goes YCbCr 422 Dolby Vision mode (sink led?), there doesn’t seem to be any option in the settings to change it to source led. Not sure that matters.

Also, fastforwarding/seeking seems to work without crashing. Again, not sure this matters.

Thank you so much. I hope Ugoos can support FEL in AM8 through firmware update.

FEL support is dead.

Hi, Does this device support coreelec? I hope it does, I think will be better than my dune hd homatics box…!
