Best device for Coreelec in 2024

Doesn’t HDFury have a device that can sync with LEDs? Would expect them to fully support TV-led.

The page you linked to actually already tells you no:

Support SDR/HDR and LLDV content. (No support for normal DV yet)

Yeah i can technically understand that Tv-led is more complicated/expansive than LLDV, as in LLDV essentially everything is already in a easy to process/scan format, since all the heavy lifting happened in the player already.
Tv-led is also the only “special” format that behaves this way, with its proprietary RGB tunneling.

Yet there are 20$ sticks that can do LLDV and also have enough power to decode the Tv-led RGB tunneling. I suspect that this is maybe a license issue with Dolby or that a cheap SoC that can transform/decode the Tv-led signal is hard to come by?

Whatever the reason, at least FancyLED should add a “*” to there “Dolby Vision” compatible claim for the LED-Box, so make it clear that only LLDV is supported. So that advanced customers get the hint that DV processing is probably subpar, as i have yet to see a player that does “perfect” LLDV compared to the newer TV’s that all do a very good job in TV-led mode.

Fancy just responded to me and regurgitated exactly what you said. I think you’re right about the license.

The best device for me is an up-to-date Box (e.g. 905x4) with good overall performance with

  • unlocked bootloader for CoreElec
  • AV1 and DolbyVision support (on ATV and CE)
  • full hardware support in CoreElec
  • decent ATV boot option (Android 11 at least) with Netflix, Disney+ etc certificates for 4K/HDR (widewine L1 and google certif)
  • decent remote (preferably BT not IR)
  • affordable (<100€)

The list becomes short if not empty. The Kinhank G1 was a hot candidate untill KH locked the bootloader…

The title is Best device for Coreelec. No one thinks the best device for Coreelec can also be the best device for certifies apps. If you want one device that can do both, you certainly aren’t getting the best device… for neither, not Coreelec and not certified apps.

I also have an TOX3 as well as my G1.
TOX3 doesn’t have DV but works superbly and is fairly priced on AliExpress.
DV isn’t an issue for me as I use HDR (Samsung tv)

This is not true. You’re rationalizing the software requirements of Coreelec to any given hardware, or, the software requirements of ATV to any given hardware. Either is a oversight akin to “heavier-than-air” flight being impossible, the desired condition is not zero-sum.

Yes, you can have 1 device that is the best at ATV and simultaneously Coreelec, there’s nothing stopping this. By the law of averages it is increasingly forth coming, if it hasn’t happened already (I haven’t kept track of all the devices).

It hasn’t happened. I keep track of all devices. The best device for legal, certified apps is the Apple TV 4K, good luck installing Coreelec there. Maybe we can dispense with Coreelec and use Infuse? Yep but then we’d lose the height audio channels. All the Android TV options have some sort of limitation, just look at the most powerful one, the Nvidia Shield: No AV1, VP9P2, red push on Dolby Vision. When you find this one device that can do everything the Apple TV 4K and a Ugoos/Minix with s922xj with Coreelec do, let me know, please!

The Homatics Box R 4K Plus (and its cousins) comes really close though. It fulfills all of @kszaboa 's requirements, except the price.

Only downsides are that it is not as snappy because of a slower SoC and the ATV 12 firmware that supports AFR and DTS-HD is still in beta.

I just read in the Homatics Telegram group that they have finally released a new beta (v7954) that they are hoping could become final.

is apple tv better then google tv streamer? is there a other better reason to go for apple besides certified apps?

The new google streamer uses the same soc as an old fire tv stick, this is ridiculous for the price they ask for it, even a nokia 8010 has a better quality/price relation imo. I only use apple tv for streaming, all streaming, certified apps mostly. Besides the streaming, it barely any bugs, faster and more fluid than anything out there, the match frame rate always works and has been working for a long time. It’s just a no worries device.

Comparing TOX3 and G1, other than DV, any major differences you notice @bazzle?

I assume Google and Netflix and Co are the factors trying to stop this to happen, not technical limitations  As far as I understand these content providers try to force closed systems to prevent webrips, and this means preventig booting CE. If you do not play by these rules as manufacturer, you do not get a L1 certificate for the streaming apps. Something like this happens with Kinhanh G1 now.

the day they locked it out, I sent them a message letting them know of coreelec developments.

I add one more item to m list: ability to install CE to EMMC
Which cannot be done on 905x4 afaik. I sticked in the fastest SD-card into my G1 and I am quite happy with the GUI, even if my good old Beelink GT King installed on internal was quite convincing

just ordered a 2nd Kinhank G1 before the stock with unlocked bootloader is sold out

There is a procedure to move the main storage partition to the Android /data partition using a couple of commands in SSH:

mkdir -p /media/data
mount /dev/data /media/data
mkdir /media/data/coreelec_storage
systemctl stop kodi
rsync -ah --info=progress2 /storage/ /media/data/coreelec_storage/
umount /media/data

mf
vi /flash/config.ini

# add this line at the end of the file
coreelec='quiet toram disk=FOLDER=/dev/data'

# and reboot

# check everything was done correctly with command
mount

# before
# /dev/sda1 on /flash type vfat (ro,.....)
# /dev/sda2 on /storage type ext4 (rw,noatime)

# after
# /dev/sda1 on /flash type vfat (ro,,.....)
# /dev/data on /storage type ext4 (rw,noatime,resgid=1065)

# I also add this line in /storage/.config/autostart.sh
# to unmount storage partition from USB stick
mountpoint -q /media/STORAGE && umount /media/STORAGE

Just to double check: does this overwrite/break the android tv installation?

It does not. I used this on my Dune Homatics and can still dual-boot to ATV without issue.

Hi, my TOX3 runs from emmc but I forgot how I did that. I remember visiting a Russian website with information. Still it runs flawlessly and it updates software almost daily.

Apart from that AV1 files are sometimes giving black screens in the middle of a movie (sound keeps running) and subtitles are “blinking”. This also with: https://relkai.coreelec.org/Amlogic-ne/ce-21/CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-21.1.1-Omega_nightly_20241015.tar
