Best device for Coreelec in 2025 (and 2026)

AM6B+ is the one.

The AM6B+ is quite old now. I don’t know that the AM8+ or AM9 are that much better but the reason my AM6+ stopped working was a failed update that basically bricked the Android OS. Every attempt to reinstall the update failed too. At least it had no effect on CoreELEC. What I find attractive about the AM9 is the OTA updates instead of having to sideload them.

Another thing I intensely dislike about Ugoos is their total commitment to providing no service to their customers. You only have to look at their blog detailing all their updates to see not a single question asked by customers has ever been responded to. Indeed, a week ago, I used their messaging system to ask a question. Despite receiving an automated confirmation that they had received my question and would respond within 24 hours, I am still waiting.

Right now at this date, S6, S905X5 is recommend in CPU power and power usage.

But today there is no DV device available.

Best to wait for 2026 releases then?

Nope.. Best to wait for 2030 releases :winking_face_with_tongue:

I just bought an AM6B+ because in OP, it seems to be the best device lol.
Maybe I shouldn’t do that finally !

I’m able to test a Dune HD 4K (with CE-NO), and it didn’t work as expected for now from what I have in mind compare to my other device with Kodi Android.

When my AM6+ did work, it was very good. As I said, it still works provided I run it with CoreELEC. I am sure the AM6B+ is an excellent box but if I have to buy another box now, I would prefer something more up to date. After all, Since the AM6B+, there has been the AM7, AM8, AM8 Pro, and now the AM9.

Why? Give me reasons rather than just an accusation, please.

If you use the android part of the box then none of the ugoos devices are better than a shield, but if you’re using coreelec then the am6b+ is the best device out because of its ability to play DV FEL.

If you want a device that runs android I don’t know why anyone would use a non android TV box.

You should be able to unbrick the Ugoos Am6b easily, then flash latest slimboxtv, runs excellent!!

As to a new box ,it all depends on your media Library, How many FEL titles do you have, and uf you want/need playback, then stay with Ugoos

Here are a couple Maybe checkout Ugoos x4q pro S905X4-j

And X96X10 PRO S928X-J

Happy Testing

My box is an AM6 Plus. It is older then the AM6B. How can I unbrick it?
I don’t know what you mean by flashing the latest slimboxtv and I have no idea what FEL titles are?
Most of my usage is streaming from YouTube and Amazon Prime, although I have converted my DVD collection to H264 mkv format. I also have a few mp4’s. I do not have a TV, the box runs through a Bose sound system to my projector.

There are test points you can bridge to force maskrom mode/so USB Burning Tool will recognize device/ There are tutorials, maybe even here, or Google it.

Slimboxtv is an alternative to factory firmware, if you are not familiar with.

Dolby Vision FEL is all the rave currently, and the Ugoos Box is the Best for playback..If you don’t care about Dolby Vision FEL, then look for an alternative.

The Ugoos Am6 is limited to Android 9,if you use u-tube and Amazon prime, probably better to grab a new Box with latest Android 11 and up.

you recommend S905X5 over a S928X? I thought S928X has higher CPU power and power usage difference is negligible in terms of cost over a year. thanks for your continued support

Hi, currently I own an Ugoos AM6B Plus, every of my use-cases work as expected, including DV FEL on CE-ng. There is a tempting opportunity to get a sealed, origin packaged, well-priced Amazon Fire TV Cube 2nd gen. Can anybody think of any good argument why I should buy it? I understand it requires more configuration, unlock the bootloader, etc. - it is not a concern, as I am an IT engineer. I can only think it could be a good backup/secondary device. Please convince me to buy it / not buy it. Thanks!

Hmmmmmm, Do you have 2 Dolby Vision Display/TV/Monitor?,They both do the same FEL Profile 7,use the same CoreELEC NG kernel, maybe is overkill if only can be used on same Display

Of course if you like the challenge of setting up the Cube,Then the Excellent Work Prome3us has done over at XDA is well received!!

That being said I have 3 machine for Dolby Vision, Playback and only 1 Dolby Vision Display!!

Happy Testing

Honestly I think you’d be better off buying another AM6B+, if you need a second box or a backup for the first.
