Best device for Coreelec in 2025 (and 2026)

AM6B+ is quite expensive right now, Aliexpress have their biggest sale tomorrow but right now it’s at $186, from the sounds of it @atld has the Fire TV Cube 2nd gen lower than $100 if he said it’s well priced (I’m guessing $80), so if it’s sealed then with his IT engineering background, it’s a no brainer. the Fire TV Cube 2nd gen is slightly faster than the AM6B+ and it has full android and probably half the price, so I’m not sure where your recommendation is coming from

And no gigabit Ethernet, and has just 2gb ram.

One well configured heaviest skin with some widget, and total freeze.

I keep forgetting about the 2GB downgrade, I take back what I said. 2GB is too little with decent skin, heck 4GB is too little for a friend. also forgot it has no Gig ethernet. yeah the AM6B+ > Fire Cube

I guess I’ll comment on this. Few devices use more than 2GB in CE-NG. Back when people were posting screenshots of their video player stats layouts, there wasn’t a single screenshot of anyone using more than 2GB ram. Maybe it makes some people feel better to have 4GB RAM and never use more than 2GB.

Regarding the difference between ~300Mbps (Gbit adapter connected to USB2) and 1000Mbps, it does not matter for video playback. Blu-rays average 60-80Mbps, a couple are closer to 100Mbps, a few might momentarily spike to 150Mbps. The difference between starting a video is literally ~0.2-0.3sec. Switching video resolutions and refresh rates takes 1-2seconds on some TVs.

Despite these differences, this reviewer who owns both 2nd gen Cube and AM6+ felt that both UI and video load times were slightly faster on the Cube.

People also mention that the AM6+ has WiFi6, but kernel 4.9 doesn’t support WiFi6? Even in kernel 5.15 WiFi6 is limited on the AM6+. People have reported up to 556Mbps with WiFi5 on the Cube. Maybe this is possible on the AM6+?

Both unlocking and installing CE to the eMMC are performed in one step, with one script. No USB/SDcard flashing, then setup, then eMMC transfer necessary.

4gigs RAM I think is the minimum nowadays as more recent versions of CE will inevitably will need more horsepower meaning more RAM as is life.

I agree, i currently have a SK1 and where i use library for my media and widgets in total idle from boot I am currently using 3gb, when refreshing the skin AF2 and watching media this will easily go past 6gb ram

It’ll be different ram usage on a box with 8GB and the box with 2GB only. Both exactly same setup.

Yada is right. 2GB is enough for anything. If you plan to use NG even better cause older kernel put less stress on a system.

It’ll be interesting to see peoples RAM usage so we have an objective conclusion to see if 2GB is enough. also users should state what skin they are using and if they are using Addons primarily or KODI Library (Or both as adamosborne83 uses)

regardless of other peoples RAM usage, atld could easily find thee answer he’s looking for by just checking the RAM usage on his AM6B+, if he’s using less than 1.5GB, then RAM is no concern

2GB is definitely enough to run heavy skin with lots of widgets.

Widgets, yes i would agree, but if you are using a large library 6000+ movies, scrapped from movie database python, then 2gb ram is not enough and will cause issues and crashes.

This claim is based on personal experience with 2GB in CE-NG? Or is it solely based on an Android-based device running Kodi with a 5.4 kernel?

The SK1 with 8GB device in CE-NO does not inform you how a 2GB device in CE-NG functions. If it did then 4GB wouldn’t even be enough as you said since you reach 6GB used. And we already know 4GB is enough for a large library?

Just because RAM can be filled doesn’t mean it needs to be, it’s also reclaimed when it’s needed.

the Homatics is at a good price right now

$105.71 minus $17.00 (use code GB9955 UK exclusive I think you’ll have to see if you get a code in product page) minus $1.06(107 Coins, just log in a few days to collect coins)

ALSO

A good CoreELEC box without DV for cheapest price.

Where do you have this price? Can you PM?

pm sent, it’s their big sale of year, everything reduced and good coupons, depending on your country.

I remember the days that a CE install would never go above ~800 mb.

Glad I bought the 4gb models, because nowadays a very basic install with no library, no memory hungry skins or any other add-ons . Just playing local and TV media uses a lot more.

Checking right now, just watching a show memory usage is 2,2 GB. Checked with an Odroid N2+ running Omega, Piers uses even more.

Something is wrong with your system or you have background tasks or maybe huge IPTV lists. Testing Piers on my N2 with a local NextPVR backend and Kodi playing live TV with Estuary it under 750M on Piers and even adding a second web client using ffmpeg transcoding it is showing under 950M

Martin

You are correct.

I checked and this instance is doing more than I described. Tvheadend and some other things are also running so I stand corrected. I should start labeling instances

PS: I stay away from so called ‘iptv services’ so that’s not a factor

Whats currently the best Device for CE-NO 22 Piers?

SK1/AM8 if you want to use it with local library and default estuary skin.

I still say N2+ if you don’t need the fancy stuff, although it’s growing a beard
