The media is distributed over 7 HDD’s all connected to the hub. At the moment, the hub is connected to the AM6 Plus via what I believe to be a USB 2.0 port. I may be wrong about that. I will need to check, but I am not at home until later tonight. The AM6 is connected to a Bose Lifestyle sound system and the projector is fed from that. Everything other than the projector is in a fully-open rack at the back of the room. CoreElec scans each drive to make up its library.
I regret I have no idea what the bitrate is. Can it be seen in CoreElec’s settings?
I will admit I tried to purchase the AM9 Pro on Amazon yesterday. It is supposedly in stock but I got an error message saying they could not sell it to me at this time, but they could sell me all the other junk I put in the basket. So, I popped across to AliExpress and bought the AM6B+. To be honest, for my purposes, it will probably be all I need. If an AM9B+ is ever released, maybe I would upgrade, but I reckon they will move straight to the AM10 next.
they won’t release any “B” model, the AM6B+ was just the AM6 Plus with WiFi 6, if you only use CE fine but I would go with AM9P if dual booting Android for good to have apps, Android 14 with possibly newer versions down the road, AM6B+ stuck on Android 9.
that’s a simple equation, 7 > 1 so yes you need the hub
as i eluded to in the last post, usb 2.0 use practically useless in 2026
my loose research shows the am6 only offers usb 2.0 so you would be correct
if usb 2.0 “almost” handles it ok then usb 3.0 should be no problem
assumptions made: bitrate is relatively medium (bluray ish), causes of 3 frame stutter actually due to usb transfer rate, hard drives in good condition without errors, stutter not caused by bitrate spikes in VBR which in turn cause CPU spikes … and others
short version:
usb 3.0 is at least as-fast-as a mechanical magnetic drive (*in spec) so try to keep everything 3.0+, single usb 3.0 port means hub required
primary differences
4 core am9 pro vs 6 core am6b+, the head to head am6b+ is ~10% faster
am6b+ is more mature and still supports emmc install
expectation is better media browsing on am6b+ because loading posters
proven, tested, supported device that is still slightly faster than something much newer without the worry that some android 16+ update is going to block coreelec
10% doesn’t sound like much but when you’re already in a league of under powered devices it’s a nice bonus
yes but 10% it’s not that much when you think about what CPU cores the AM9 Pro is using, the A510 cores are small cores successor to A55 while A73 was big cores released in 2016, A510 more efficient, 6nm vs 12nm, using ARMv9 instead of ARMv8, so more modern, and as the price is about the same I would go with the newer and more modern hardware AM9P offers if buying new, or if you want to save money the Xiaomi TV 3rd gen box is fine considering the low price.
which is more important more mature and more well supported or just more modern?
ok. your opinion is now disregarded if you think a xiaomi device without a lan port and only USB2.0 is fine and would choose it over something with at least a lan port and usb 3.0
as I said for the same price I rather buy newer and more modern hardware, and about mature AM9P will get mature enough as it’s being worked on so I don’t understand that part, and I already have two AM6B+, AM9P, three Homatics and now also the Xiaomi box for my parents, it works fine you know there is usb gigabit port if needed, CoreELEC does not need multiple USB ports.
And what want you made there?
That one, a stock android too, without any certification.
No full streaming no anything.
Total unnecessary.
The two full equal..
I personally not recommend.
Better to wait a little, when the new homatics s905x5 come with all certification.
as I said it’s still newer and more modern OS, 120Hz UI is nice, also security updated newer kernel, Android 9 is not supported by Google anymore so depending on what apps people use they might not work in future, I don’t care about certification as I don’t use streaming services.
you talk like it’s a good box
homatics / rocktek are better if all you want is “good enough” and they support FEL
all you’re looking at is “what’s the least amount of money i can spend and still get something usable”
while i’m actually trying to recommend good products
no I won’t buy some more as the price increased, I bought one when it’s still was low, one is enough and for family and friends I’ll buy the Xiaomi TV box if nothing else can compare for the price/performance, but for now the Homatics boxes still works for them so no need to buy anything.
as I said for the money it’s doing fine, the others are more than double the price atm and they have worse SoC than the Xiaomi, and for my parents it’s good enough, I’m using the AM9P/AM6B+.
Yes I had similar issues on an earlier box with 3 HD’s. I ended up getting a NAS wit its own HD’s plus 2 more external and now it streams to CE at speeds I cannot fault over connected ethernet cable.
