Big surprise coming soon

Big surprise coming soon – thanks to real open source hard work! :tada:

Hey everyone,
After months of dedicated development by the CoreELEC team and the open source community, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news:
Dolby Vision FEL (Profile 7 Full Enhancement Layer) now works on ALL CoreELEC-NO supported devices that have a Dolby Vision licensed SoC (including s905x2, s922x/z, s905x4 and similar).

This is proper, hardware-accelerated Dolby Vision – not some workaround or fake trigger. Real FEL playback, full metadata handling, and the image quality it was meant to deliver.
This didn’t happen overnight. It took clean coding, and collaboration in the open – the way open source is supposed to work. No hidden blobs, no proprietary tricks locked to one project.
(And yes, for those wondering: this is very different from the closed-source style implementations that try to cheat their way around things. Kodi is open-source and it deserve adanced features to also be open-source available to everyone. Real progress comes from transparency and community effort.)

If you’re rocking a DV-licensed Amlogic box on CoreELEC-NO, stay tuned and keep your builds updated. Big things are happening, and this is just one of the nice surprises ahead.
Big thanks to everyone involved in making this possible – devs, testers, and the whole community. This is why we love open source!

I started to believe this, until someone pointed out to me that it’s April 1st today

This would be big if true!

I could even choke crashes in kodi 22 alpha every time you refresh widgets with skin other than estuary :joy:

Ha ha, I’d forgotten it’s the 1st of April today…

This would not be funny if it is an April Fool.

Why ?

Team CE is no friend of FEL because it´s only to use pirate stuff

Excited for good things to come — CoreELEC is going to be great again!:star_struck:

If true.

That is partly true, but there are also plenty of people who create their own rips from physical discs so they don’t need to shuffle discs and muck around with disc players

And this is the case where it get illegal as all physical discs are copy protected.
So you need to “crack” this protection to make a “backup” - illegal.

Only a backup, like a 1:1 clone of the disc is legal. But you can’t do anything with it as it’s encrypted…

I think the legality of removing encryption also depends on the local laws of the country that you live in. Some countries say “you bought the disc, therefore you own it and you can do anything you want with it as long as you don’t distribute the unencrypted media ”.

But let’s not get into any political discussions here

So if you aren’t watching your own ripped media then what are you watching?

Nope, only the free sample EL_BL.mkv

So you only ever watch free samples… You don’t use Kodi/CoreELEC for watching movies or TV shows.

This is great! I hope I can get my hands on this build soon!

Are you joking? Today is the 1 April but may be is not the case to carry over with this joke as the subject is really important to many of us. Thank you.

Is there a build at our disposition to test this? No. Will there be a build available anytime, soon or not? Who knows, things keep evolving and the Team keeps surprising all of us. The sky is the limit. As long as there’s a fire inside our devs we’ll keep bringing down the walls in front of us.
