CE-NG Dolby Vision (+FEL) for DV-licensed SOCs (s905x2, s922x/z, s905x4)

Is this Kinhank G1 OTA update forced or is it voluntary?

If it’s voluntary (not forced as on Amazon Fire Sticks) I could never understand the urge some people have to update something that is working OK, especially seeing recently how some updates mess-up systems that are working perfectly without the update…

I made a new account on facebook. I informed Kinhank of the situation, pleaded my case why it’s a bad marketing and financial decision to keep boot loader locked now that we have FEL working and gig ethernet.
basically said they are missing out 3x the sales going forward at the minimum (imho) and asked them to re-consider their decision.
if anyone else wants to let them know they also want access and intended to buy/run coreelec on their device but has now decided not to buy a G1 then you can also voice your concerns. If they see genuinely how much excitement their was for this box, they might give us control back. worth a try…

this is their facebook page

Just a practical question : if I don’t care about the ATV functions and will only use the Kinhank G1 for CE then the bootloader lock doesn’t really matter right ?
Unless you get one with the updated locked bootloader from a vendor, you can continue to use it with CE as it’d never get the update.

Yes, it will work unless you update the firmware.

New devices come with original FW that existed at production date, and new updates are then issued OTA.
If this Kinhank G1 OTA update is NOT forced, as on some devices, but is voluntary, just don’t update, and you should be OK with any device you buy now.
At some point in future all new devices will ship with this new FW version, and then who knows what will be…

Thank you for taking the time to respond, much appreciated.

Even if the update was forced, since you never boot to ATV, you’d never get the update, so as long as the use case is CE only, the update would never brick the box, correct?

Thank you.

I suppose so, and it turns out that, at the moment, the missing CE Power option “Reboot to eMMC” is not a bug but a welcome feature :grinning:

they don’t mention is the updates will revert the option to load third party systems
but at least we have their attention. next update will be crucial

With nighty 240904 and new sc2 sei dtb, ethernet is still not working.
Cant get ipaddress from dhcp, need to enter manual. After setting up ip, can ping but cant ssh.

with latest nightly and added support for the devices, is it OK to apply CPM T6 afterwards or do we lose the new supported devices?

You can try and always go back to the current nightly if things don’t work.

yeah but I want to use CPM version because of the better DV features, does his version change the dtb?

What is worrying is that other manufacturers than Kinhank could do the same thing and easily block/lock the bootloader of there device…

If it does you can easily copy working dtb.img over the non working one.

Just don’t be the first one to test new update

Or like me assume that screenshots of new G1 firmware posted on this forum mean that CE will run with it

I go the password and unfortunately it doesn’t work. The OSD keyboard didn’t work for me either, had to use a remote with keys or attach a keyboard. Edit: turns out I need to use their BT remote to access the OSD keyboard but it didn’t help the invalid password I was given.

Ask if they will release Original Factory Firmware from January 2024
Image file, or OTA

then can flash / recover /restore
