CE-NG Dolby Vision (+FEL) for DV-licensed SOCs (s905x2, s922x/z, s905x4)

Nope, otherwise would be -K

This is only for Android. There is no limit for CE.

Slightly off topic but since it was brought up…

Since there is licensing for the Dolby and DTS audio formats on the Android sides, I’ve always been curious, how is there no limit on the CoreElec side? Dolby seems like the type of company that wants to collect money for everything that touches their formats.

I remember reading there is an e-fuse for the Dolby Vision, seems safe to assume there is no such equivalent for Dolby audio.

I’m assuming there are open source linux libraries that allow processing and passthrough of Dolby/DTS audio?

It is physics: What is convolution reverb, how is it created and used?

From internet: DTS-HD / TrueHD etc. is a virtual format. It is send in IEC frames towards the AVR. Those frames are transmitted via 16 bit 192 khz and 8 channels. You cannot hear that sound (fancy noise) on analog output as it is a digital stream and the audio confguration is only used to match the bandwidth.

I don’t know if it’s known whether the Dolby/DTS audio licensing refers to decoding, encoding, both or whether passthrough is included. If it’s for encoding, that doesn’t happen in CE, but it does happen on the Android side.

The security efuses list Dolby and DTS audio capabilities. I believe they are only status fuses, but it makes the most sense to me that all SOCs are manufactured the same, with all features enabled, and then efuses are used to disable features/licensing not paid for or requested by the vendor.

soc changed box with slimbox fw.s905x2-j/k wifi5 100m cebox is about 200rmb with free dilivery in china.

Which percentage is that from China’s whole population?

It has nothing to do with the user base. It is widely known that Kodi’s operation is very user-unfriendly. It is only through the relentless promotion by CE enthusiasts that so many people have joined the CE community. Moreover, with a growing number of merchants now offering SoC replacement services, the difficulty and cost for CE NG users to upgrade their set-top boxes have been decreasing.

Really? And why is that? You install Kodi, add some sources, watch. Why this could be rocket science?

Then, that’s not homatics box. Cheap Chinese replica. When the soc other why you think, it will be working as the original?

Cheap, can’t expect too much, 200 CNY(28 USD)

another rare soc can fel ,s905d3-k0n

It would be more of a surprise if you could find an NG era DV licensed SOC that can’t play DV FEL. The kernel code and DV modules are mostly the same for all s905x2 to A311D SOCs. I don’t think anyone believes that DV FEL is limited by the hardware, it’s limited by software, as we see with the s905x4 that loses DV FEL playback in kernel 5.4.

There is DV support even in the s905x SOCs, if you can find a DV licensed s905x, that would be a truly rare find.

DV licensed s905x2 SOCs were not rare, TiVo had several devices with them, and there are a lot of these devices. The s905D3G which is essentially the same as the s905D3 also supports DV FEL playback It’s in the chromecast, which has sold millions of units.

Finding devices with DV licensed NG SOCs was never hard, it was hard finding devices with there SOCs that weren’t locked down and could boot CE.

So it still to get FEL working, on S905X4 (Homatics) we should use CE-NG 21 build with posted dovi.ko in initial post, right?

Yes, you’re absolutely right. What’s needed is the unencrypted Amlogic chip. Currently, on China’s Xianyu second-hand marketplace, some merchants purchase batches of brand-new, unused unlocked chips. They then select Amlogic set-top boxes of good quality to replace the chips, and flash the Slimbox Android firmware onto them—this is how a second-hand DIY set-top box comes into being.

Since second-hand boxes cannot play Dolby Vision are quite cheap, the main costs lie in the brand-new chips and labor. That’s why these DIY boxes are so affordable. The prices are usually around 200 RMB for the S905X2-K/J, 300-400 RMB for the S905X4-K/J, and 500-600 RMB for the A311D-K/S922X-J.

Hi , looking for a new local streaming box , currently have Dune HD Pro Vision 4K Solo , was disspointed in the GUI of the dune fairly bland and ugly ( i like pretty looking GUI  ) so started looking at Zidoo , and came upon posts about full FEL support , this lead me down the rabbit hole of which chipsets do and dont , anyway after about 2 hours of reading it brings me to here  , the first glimpse of CE was based on the Ugoos S922X-J , but then i saw this post that lists newer chipset that support FEL , a few questions to help me claify

from reading ( sorry if not true ) the S922X-J is not true dual FEL as it uses some of the information from second to make better than MEL image

so question is the newer S922X-J and S922X-K chipsets

is it still the same state its not true FEL ??

is it better to go with the newer chipsets or is the old S922X-J still the best for FEL support ??

Thanks

Mike

opps sorry was ment to be the newer chipsets

s905x4-k and s905x4-j

Those all support the Dolby Vision profile 7 Fel lossless mode. The newer socs little underpowered, the S922 has better performance.

But for the dv p7 fel , you need use the CE NG version.
