Ugoos AM6b(+) HDMI signal drop/no picture issue

The 3rd gen Cube supports NTFS natively. NTFS drives can be mounted with root on the 2nd gen Cube, since the NTFS driver is already present in the stock kernel.

oh excellent, wasn’t aware of that then that makes the cube an excellent choice since you have the streaming services and certified also.

Do you recommend the 3rd gen cube or 2nd gen cube brand new from amazon? I will need to do some research

Depends what you need. From a hardware perspective the 3rd gen is better, but it can’t boot CE. Lossless audio playback in FireOS is only supported on the 3rd gen. There’s only temp root for the 3rd gen, enough to set a custom launcher. However Amazon has run out of stock of the vulnerable units in many locations.

The 2nd gen can be unlocked (to enable CE booting), but it’s no longer in production and can only be found new on eBay. Regarding NTFS, any drive can be mounted with root, but it’s contents will only be visible to apps that have been granted root access. A magisk module like this would have to be created for the 2nd gen to make the drive visible to all apps.

Sorry I didn’t mean to get too off topic.

thanks, still its interesting if other boxes don’t have the hdmi signal drop, maybe @ jbaevea may give us a review if his 2nd gen cube fairs well.

I think ill wait a bit, see how I get one with the homatics box.

I have not got ant HDMI signal drop in the last couple weeks since I reloaded Ugoos and CE and set both to 12bit/422. I haven’t got time in testing the cube 2nd gen yet. Will report back.

I haven’t had time to but will try later, I took my AM6+ box apart and was right they stuck a nasty thick thermal pad between the cpu and other chipset, it felt like most of the heat transfer would have got blocked. I have re-pasted thermal padding and now my cpu temps dropped a lot like 20-30c.

I can’t be 100% if the hdmi drop was due to this, but it’s never good to have a hot cpu or chipset, you can get throttling/cut offs or other hardware issues.

This maybe why the more the AM6+ is used over a few weeks or even a few months the hdmi signal drop issue lessens since the thermal pad wears in more or the hardware burns in better to lessen the issue.

I will try and post pictures on the AM6+ thread or separate thread.

Hi, I had similar issues with my ugoos AM6b and my onkyo nr7100 receiver. In my case the issue was some kind of incompatibility with HDMI 2.1.
It seems like a handshake issue where it just can’t negotiate with the device accordingly, even if I forced 10 bit depth and 4.4.4 subsampling.
If you can, try with a HDMI 2.0!
With HDMI 2.0 (20gbps) I was able to play HDR 4k@24/30 at 4.4.4 without issues and have the UI at 1080p/120 at 4.4.4.

Posting a reply in this thread because this problem had me pulling my hair out.
I was seeing the exact issue described by many. Playback of ALL content (including DV) was working except for HDR10.

My hdmi signal would drop and I wasn’t able to re-acquire it short of stopping the playback and returning to the Kodi menu.

My setup is an AM6b+ wired via hdmi to a Yamaha VX-383 AVR that was then wired to a 4k dolby compatible TCL 65 inch tv.

I was able to solve this issue

Going into settings → player → videos and disabling refresh rate switching stopped my signal dropouts entirely.
I’m unsure if the bug lies with the ugoos’ chipset or the actual AVR firmware, but something in the process of switching video refresh rate of 4:4:4 video with a bt.2020 colorspace and ONLY those specific conditions caused a desync that the setup couldn’t recover from.

Again, disabling refresh rate switching fixed my particular issue, but I have to do some testing to determine if this will cause stuttering in video playback from the imperfect fps division.

I have another hdmi cable coming in the mail I’ll do some testing with, and I can try manually enforcing different hdmi standards in the AVR/TV to see if I can make re-acquiring the picture more stable.

Dear all,

I am having the exact same problem as lot of people on this thread! I brought my Ugoos AM6B+, set it up last weekend following the AVS guide/YouTube video, etc. Installed PM4K, set that up, tried a DV movie (the reason I bought the box), and it played GREAT. A few days later (today), I sit down for the evening to enjoy some serious DV content with my setup (DV TV, good HDMI cables, decent AVR, all compatible). I sample a few movies, they all played straight away, looked great, (even a profile 7 movie!) I was so relieved it was all working perfectly. THEN… I paused what I was watching, took a bathroom break and when I came back my screen was black. It’s in sleep mode, I thought. I pressed the OK button and the sound came back on, but the picture didn’t. I pressed some buttons, I could hear the ā€˜click’ of the menu each time, but my screen was still blank. I reset the player, STILL blank screen. I unplugged it, left it for a few minutes, plugged it back in and the Kodi/Coreelec menu came back. I put it down to a random glitch, went to resume my movie, as soon as I pressed play ā€˜black screen’, but I could still hear the audio again. Long story short, I repeated this process several times and the same thing happened. The only way I could get it to play was to turn off the ā€˜hardware chip encoder’ option (thing), but then the video was VERY choppy and poor quality and unwatchable.

I’ve spent the last few hours researching the issue, (waste of an evening) and I STILL can’t get it to work and the screen only comes on power up about half the time. I’ve tried nearly all the suggestions already on this thread, I’ve done a clean install, I’ve upgraded to the latest ā€˜nightly build’, I’ve changed the UI resolution, turned off ā€˜change refresh rate’, changed bit depth, cleared the whitelist, etc. etc. etc. and nothing has worked. The most annoying aspect is that after my first setup, it ran beautifully, (for about half an hour). I hadn’t changed anything that point, on the player or my setup, so I know my setup is ā€˜good’. The problem came out of nowhere, and even the ā€˜taking out and putting the HDMI jack back in’ did nothing to restore my picture. I have tried watching another KODI channel and that played fine, but every time I try to watch DV content, I get a black screen.

PLEASE can someone help me to fix this issue? Should I change builds? Are there new settings now that are good, or at least ā€˜more likely’ to work? I’ve even tried Jellyfin as an alternative to Plex, and same result. I feel like the problem is possibly in the EDID handshake, but I’m using the cable that came with the player. I also read something about pressing certain buttons to get the picture back to menu?? Can someone please specify which buttons exactly? I was given the UR02 remote with my order. I’ve also heard some people comment that maybe the machine needs to ā€˜burn in’, but if I can’t watch anything on it, how am I supposed to do that? And why should I need to do that, when it worked straight out of the box, once I did my initial setup (briefly).

One point of note is that when my box starts my picture auto swtiches via the TV to ā€˜game optimizer’, which has a variable refresh rate setting (could that be throwing off the hz?) I have, of course, changed to cinema mode (but I still have Filmmaker mode enabled), but no dice. Is there any chance these settings could be causing interference? (Even though they are all the same settings that worked initially?) My setup is a LG G2, with Sony STR-790 and my Ugoos runs from my ā€˜bluray’ slot on my AVR with passthrough audio to AVR and passthrough video to my TV btw. As I said, it worked great initially, but then I suddenly got a black screen, and sometimes it stays black even when I reset the box (but I can hear clicks when I press remote buttons), so I know it hasn’t crashed. I have strong WiFi too.

Sounds like this is a problem for a lot of people. If anyone can give me some advice for things to try, or even better, a fix, I’d be really grateful. Many thanks for reading.

You didn’t try a different HDMI cable? First thing I did was throw the one that came with in the bin…

Have you tried plugging directly into the TV instead of going via the AVR?

A new cable is a good suggestion.
And, if it works with your setup, plugging in to TV is also.

But, assuming they don’t work for you - it’s definitely an HDMI sync issue. I have set up my remote to have a fix that simply directs the AVR to change input to something else then immediately back to Kodi again - this triggers a re-sync and all is well. It’s definitely a bit irritating but it only happens about once a week or so here, if that. So a problem we can live with given that is a one button, approx 5 seconds fix (and yep, mostly seems to happen on pauses or occasionally just after stopping a movie (UI comes back but is lost a few seconds later) - I wonder about the screensaver (I use the picture slideshow) somehow exacerbating things…)

Anyway, just chiming in - the remote macro I mention is pretty handy…

Quick update: My results from testing so far:

- External HD to TV via USB: works fine (including DV, except profile 7 which gets converted to HDR)

- Ugoos direct to TV: same problem with DV.

- Ugoos direct to TV (with external HD attached via USB): Plays 1080 fine, plays HDR fine, plays MOST 4K HDR fine, but a couple of non-DV 4K titles gave me black screen again (odd). When this happened, I lost the use of the menu, and couldn’t hear any ā€˜clicks’ when I pressed buttons on remote. Machine basically crashed, and I had to reset it.

- The switching HDMI to another display and back never worked, except once when I got a black screen on startup, switched HDMI and when I changed back, the menu screen came back up.

- Using my best 8K cable to connect straight to TV, so changing the HDMI cable has not made any difference either.

- I also tried the recommended settings from the post above, and still no difference.

DV runs fine from external HD to TV, so I’m sure the problem is either with Ugoos box, or there’s a bug somewhere in the software. The most odd part to me is still that it ran fine over several videos for the first hour or so in the original setup, but now I’m getting black screens constantly.

Advice for future steps given the new info. please? This is starting to drive me nuts! Many thanks.

Just reinstall the CE, and try without any plex addon.

The AFR need set to on at start stop.

Use 1080p 60Hz for the GUI, no any whitelist.

Hi @bossanova808 Can you please share your remote macro? I small howto what you did in Keymap Editor would be excellent and much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It’s a Harmony remote macro (to my AVR) to make it switch inputs and back again. Doesn’t touch Kodi at all, sorry.
