XGIMI Horizon Ultra 4K projector

Hi,
I’m running CoreELEC 22.0 Piers beta1 set to automatically download nightly updates. CE is giving a DV error concerning the Android DV kernel module.

I asked Ugoos support about the firmware version and got this reply:
“Hello, We only have Android for our Ugoos devices. Maybe you asked CoreElec ROM, you need to go to CoreElec website to check. Our latest firmware version 0.5.4n2 is Android system only. Thanks.”

I thought this may be due to my plugging the AM6 into a PC monitor, so I plugged it directly into my XGIMI Horizon Ultra projector. I do not get that error with the projector, however when passing DV content through it, the projector’s DV settings says adjustments are only available when DV content is used and will not permit access to those settings.

I am trying to narrow down whether this is caused by CE, the AM6, or the projector.
CE is set to use adaptive HDR.
In CE expert mode, all 4 display settings are disabled.

Use Dovi for CE-NO (5.15_2.6_dovi_patched_fix_fel.ko)

I have that one on my PC and copied it to the CE installation on the SD card, but I’m not 100% certain that this was the correct way to do it.

Did you also rename it to dovi.ko ?

Yes, I did.

And when you go to Settings → System Information → Video, do you see the Dolby Vision capability listed there?

No. It says something about available HDR sources: None.
So, I guess copy/pasting dovi.ko from my laptop to CE’s root was not the right way to go. The problem is I can’t understand how to use Putty and I assume that’s what is required?

Steps taken: downloaded 5.15_2.6_dovi_patched_fix_fel.ko, renamed it to dovi.ko, and copied it to CoreELEC root using copy/paste in Windows. I am guessing this is the cause of my issue.

It’s not a fake projector. I bought it direct from XGIMI.
CoreELEC is set to 1080p because no higher settings were proposed.
XGIMI support said that even if CoreELEC sends the signal as 1080p, the projector will upscale it to 4K, but I note the projector says DV settings are only available for DV content, even when passing a video specified as Dolby Vision through it.
The point is, my DV content goes through the AM6B+ before being passed onto the projector. Perhaps the 1080p setting is the cause of DV settings being unavailable on the projector? After all, unless I am mistaken, upscaling is not the same as true 4K.

The EDID shows something other: Display Product Name: 'BOSE LS'

EDID says the opposite, max 1080p, no HDR.

We can’t help you any further. You can get a DV capable TV and compare your system.
If DV is than working return the projector.

I am not going to buy a TV to test this with.
I tried through the Bose system and then direct to the projector. The result was the same.
I know you don’t want to help me any more, but do you think the HDMI cable may be the cause? I ask because it is 10 metres long and not a powered version.

The only thing that bothers me is that the AM6 feeds into the amp or the projector and in either case, CoreELEC and Kodi on the AM6 will not offer higher than 1080p. I would have thought that it would be possible to select 2160p even if the amp or projector downscaled it. Is the dovi.ko file I am using the correct one? Remember, I had doubts about that as I copy/pasted it to CoreELEC root via Windows.

Allow me to double check that. It looks like I may have connected the wrong cable to the AM6.
One other question: I had the Bose system with my previous AM6 Plus and that did not have 4K functionality so the cable used between the AM6 and the Bose was HDMI 1.4. I am still using that cable. I thought that HDMI 1.4 would still transmit 4K although at only 30 MHz. Do I need to change that cable as well?

That could definitely be an issue. Maybe you can test with a shorter cable by temporarily moving the box closer to the projector? Also, check if the projector has any settings for the HDMI ports to enable higher bandwidth (often called Ultra or something similar).

If a shorter cable works, you might consider buying an optical HDMI cable.

It was a cable issue. In summary, first I need to upgrade my HDMI cables to optical. If that doesn’t solve the problem, the Bose system will have to go, although Bose claim it is 4K compatible but limited to 30 Mhz output.

Be careful which cable you buy. I’ve tried some questionable optical HDMI cables from AliExpress in the past and they didn’t work well for my purpose (4K 120 Hz gaming from my desktop PC to my OLED TV). In the end I bought a (very expensive) Rupro cable which has worked fine ever since.
