Xiaomi Box S 3rd Gen as a Dual-boot CE Box

@Portisch @roidy
Sorry guys, got less time than I thought and couldn’t test new dtb yesterday. Will try today.
As for the the Android version, I have the exact same thing as @roidy, everything is the same as the screen.

Btw, are there things that need to be specifically tested ? Anything new ?
I saw your post @Portisch regarding WiFi, Bluetooth and DV so is there something you need us to test with this new dtb ?

Now I know the reason:

I have the build from 241022. The issue of booting is a bootloader item.

I try now the update available if it is 250107 build.

EDIT: yes, after the update the build is now 250107.001.V816.0.25.7.22 and CE just boot fine.

Next nightly CE-NO 20250930 will include a s7d_s905x5m_xiaomi_3rd_gen.dtb.

Please make a fresh, clean install on boot media and use this new DT.

Ensure first the Android version is minimum: 250107.001.V816.0.25.7.22

Otherwise the device stuck on boot at the Mi logo.

Wifi should work and DV is working to:

Does this mean there is a potential dovi.ko for other s905x5m devices or is it more complex than that?

If the soc is of the j/k variant. I still didn’t see any in our usual supporters.

Right, I hadn’t thought to look in the images of the board I see the -K now. However I did read here that one S928 did get DV even without a J/K desalinator, it might be worth a try?

No, there’s was some doubts about which X96 models were from j variant but to have DV they have to be of one of those variants. There are other ways like detailed in the unsupported channel but not related to this.

@Portisch, this is solid progress, thank you & any other CE dev working on this. Here are my findings… please LMK if I can provide any other insights:

Wi-fi works, but speeds are abysmal. Getting around ~7Mbps-ish or so between my PC (10GbE network) & Synology NAS (also 10GbE) (below) vs. 340Mbps-ish on wired (using USB gigabit ethernet hub):

What’s strange, something I’ve never seen before, are 3 different Wi-Fi options for the same SSID?!.. I tried all 3, and speeds were the same ~7Mbps-ish, so switched back to ethernet for rest of testing:

DV now works! All flavors (tested P5, P7 & P8). Yay! But, the display parameters are wrong. The picture is zoomed in, like so for all DV videos:

And these are existing issues you may already be aware of:

  • HDR10 & 10+ videos all play with weird distortion like I posted already above
  • BT section under CE settings still shows ā€˜no adapters found’

Again, thank you for working on this box.

Maybe it’s Wifi station related. On one router I get about 500kBytes/s.

On another router I get >10MBytes/s.

Buy cheep, get what you bought…

Here is all working, no problem, no log…

Conculsion: Buy cheap and take what you get.

Finally about €60 for a DV capable device isn’t that bad.

Hi,

First, thanks to dev about working on this, this is really great

I’m testing the latest nightly and I have some questions :+1:

  • When creating the image on my USB key, I didn’t copy dovi.ko (I forgot to copy to root usb key).
So I copied after, but I didn’t see settings for it, I mean only the default one when no file was there.
Do I need to reinstall from fresh ?

  • We know that BT is not detected, so it’s mean that the remote will not work right ?
I have connected keyboard and mouse to be able to configure CE.

  • So did a quick test and for now it didn’t play anything yet, I have copied my xml from standard Kodi that runs on a FireTV and my PC (connected to a db from my NAS), so my series and movies show up but can’t start them.

I didn’t look further right now, I just receive the Xiaomi

So will look how getting logs to try to figure out what is wrong.
Again thanks for all the team :+1:

Edit : I have copied a wrong playerfactory, so it explains why it failed to start

Seems dovi.ko is loaded from logs : https://paste.coreelec.org/DeadbeatMenace
But I surely not have the good version

Is anyone having any animation glitches specially when you set GUI to 4K?

Finally got a chance to try the new dtb and so far everything seems to be working really good.

Wifi works fine:-

DV plays back perfectly, no zoom effect like @1SqueezPlz reported.
HDR10 and HDR10+ playback perfectly, no weird distortion like @1SqueezPlz reported.

All in all once bluetooth is working then this will be a really nice little box.

Thanks @Portisch :+1:

Did you use some dovi.ko for it ?
Because I have tried and in log it doesn’t load.

BT doesn’t work on my side neither the remote from the box, I did use keyboard and mouse for testing

But yes, it seems that this box works quite good, I have used a usb to lan for better bandwitdh too

We are make some progress about w1/w2 chip & BT… be patient…

Nope, didn’t need to copy any dovi.ko file over, it just works.

Wait, I’m lost.
You don’t need any dovi.ko file and you still have Dolby Vision working and the Dolby Vision settings in CE settings ? When I did previously try the ā€œfirst versionā€ of CE for the box, I used the dovi.ko file, without it I didn’t have the options in CE.
Haven’t been able to do anything CE related those last few days unfortunately, been working a lot at odd hours (I’m a train driver :locomotive:) and not home a lot.

Again thank you to the devs and the testers for all the work, you have resuscitated the interest for this box. :slightly_smiling_face:

dovi.ko is now used from Android partition on eMMC.
