3D Frame Packed (MVC) output with CoreELEC?

Nice that S928X will be able to do 3D as well. Only SBS & TAB, no MVC. Unfortunately, with regard to DV, I understand it can do DV MEL, but not FEL/dual-layer.

Think I’ll order a S928X to play with, a Ugoos AM8 or AM8 Pro.

For S928x, see Installation guide

But you will not have MVC, just SBS & TAB formats

Doh! Yep, read it opposite. Ah well, will save money not buying a S928X .

Hi!

I have tested 3D with today’s nightly “CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-21.1-Omega_nightly_20240727” in the Dune homatics r 4k plus, and it works perfectly but have a small problem:
Subtitles (text and pic) and gui only appear on the left eye image.
Only MVC other 3D is good.

Thanks again.

Hi! I have the same problem with am6b+ with the last devel update and since then ng nightly 7.26-7.29. All mvc be it mk3d or iso. Under sbs the gui and subtitles are good. I was going to write but still testing all the settings. I will test it today with CEC turned off completely. I have Himedia q10 pro and with it everything is fine in 3D. I have Optoma Projector and Denon x2600h amp, 2.1 HDMI cable, but with the added 1.4 HDMI cable I have the same problem. I also tried a clean install, now I have that too.

I don’t understand without showing the issue! All is fine on my screen.

Unfortunately, the CEC was not the problem. Thank you very much for addressing the problem. I thought that I was the only one with this problem, because I searched here on the forum, but could not find it. Should I also send a LOG?

Hi @Portisch
Found a minor problem, my beelink gs king-x crashes unless I whitelist all 3D resolutions i.e 1080p30sbs etc.,
No biggie though just that the Minix U22-XJ Max don’t have this issue.

Thanks for all your work.

Hey all,

tagging @Portisch , Master of 3D :-).

Yesterday I found a potential issue and did some investigating today.

I experienced regular crashes during MVC-MKV playback of Life of Pi 3D. This happens after 1 to 5 min of continuous play. Happens in “Hardware based” 3D, but also, if you pick ''2D/monoscopic" or even “disabled”.

Interestingly, the exact same 3D-file plays fine on a non-3D display in 2D, no crashes or problems, which indicates to me, that there is an issue with 3D handling, if a 3D display is present, no matter if 3D is on, disabled or set to monoscopic.

Crash means in this case: Picture initially freezes, Audio sometimes continues for a few secs. Sometimes black screen, sometimes green bars/artefacts, then after like 10 secs it crashes back to home screen and I have to reboot, as starting any movie will freeze CE completely.

Tested a bunch of other movies in mvc-mkv and BDMV and they all play fine in 3D. I also tested the BDMV of Life of Pi and the crashes happen here as well.

The only difference between Life of Pi and all other movies I tested? Life of Pi is one of the rare 3D-movies in stereomode 14 instead of 13 (right eye first = stereomode 14). This thread names a few of these movies. As mentioned, they are pretty rare, but some are pretty high profile.

Naturally, I extended testing to Hobbit 1 (Disc 1 and 2 separately as BDMV), as this is also a stereomode 14 movie: the exact same crashes occur. So three out of three stereomode 14 movies have this issue in my testing.

I also tested changing stereomode of Life of Pi manually to 13 via a header editor. This resulted in exactly the same crashes. Changing the mode worked though, as the depth was all messed up during playback in mode 13. So I don’t know what to make out of this as I don’t know, if changing the header is enough or if there is more to a stereomode 14 file.

This is the crash log of Life of Pi in stereomode 14.

This is a sample stereomode 14 mkv (first 5 mins of the movie), which should be enough to trigger a crash consistently, at least it is on my end.

As always, all of this was tested on an Ugoos AM6B+ with an LG E6 4k passive 3D OLED with nothing inbetween (no receiver and such). Used the latest ng-nightly on a fresh install, no addons, nothing, completely mint CE.

Am happy to provide more info, if requested, just tag me :-).

There was no continues improvement on the MVC decoder since about 15 years as the user format is dead. So it will maybe not be solved ever…

The format is not dead  I don’t see how MVC decoder development has anything to do with any faults found, when MVC is still the defacto 3D SDR encoder and has been working well for years on PCs and even VR devices.

Not only have I never come across an issue with MVC decoding. But I’ve never seen a single complaint on any 3D forum about decoding MVC with 2 exceptions. First, if there is an error in implementation. I’ve seen this first hand and had to find the offending code in the dev Git before the developer would believe me and fix it. The other exception is usually when the user device is not set up correctly to decode MVC.

Even if it can’t be handled, a crash shouldn’t happen. But, I think Enet is right. There is probably some way to handle mode 14 3D content.

I think you’re all misunderstanding @Portisch , the root is an Amlogic-galile 3D code mess which there VSI team abandoned long time ago, unless you contact them there will be no miracles in fixing them atm but you never know @Portisch might find the magic cure & then Amlogic will steal him from us!

Well I am not even sure, if this is about stereomode 14 tbh. This was just a half-educated guess as I cannot interpret the crash log and don’t know what to look out for. I also had the suspicion, that this is about some audio incompatibilities, but I couldn’t replicate based on audio codec, so the idea with mode 14 stuck.

Could somebody confirm the crash on their hardware with the sample provided or other mode 14 movies?

I read somewhere that Sammys Adventure 1 is also mode 14. This movie I coincidentally tested yesterday in BDMV and it ran fine in my testing for like 10 min. Will test again later to check, maybe the crash happens in this movie after a longer time. Will report, if I see a crash.

OK so @Portisch are talking about Amlogic development. I get it now.

I just tried this on my non-3D TV and I do not experience a crash. However, I did notice that the only 3D mode available is block_rl and the picture is definitely distorted.

This actually seems to be a Kodi issue with a potential fix. It basically seems that Kodi needs to decode mode 14 files as mode 13 files and then swap the eyes for decoding to work properly.

More testing, more bad news.

I ran some longer tests and unfortunately all MVC movies (mkv and BDMV) are crashing on my end sooner or later. So most likely the mode 14 was just a red herring. The other movies just take significantly longer to crash, between 15 and 30 mins usually. Not a single one ran through and I tested like 10 movies now. I naively thought until yesterday, that if movies ran for a few min, they will run their whole runtime, but that seems to be wrong.

This is of course rather bad news, as this indicates a deeper problem maybe within the MVC handling itself, which might be out of control for the CE team. Nevertheless, I think we can rule out the mode 14 idea. Sammys Adventure is mode 13 btw as far as I can tell.

I tested with mkv/BDMV from my own discs, everything immaculately ripped with no reencoding, only remuxed, so we can assume not bad files, at least not all of them.

Now, the question to all of you: Has anyone watched multiple 3D movies and can confirm, that they ran fine? Maybe then the issue is my setup. If nobody can confirm, could somebody (@xmlcom perhaps :-)) with 3D-gear please let some movies run and report the findings? Just trying to get a bigger picture and see, if the problem is on my end or for all of us.

Thanks :-).

I had the LG E6 oled many years ago. I was using a Zidoo x9 box as source (and a BD Sony player also). I remember had many problems with many movies either from Zidoo and from the BD player. In the end I replaced the Lg with a Panasonic Plasma 3D tv (which i still use with the same sources (plus the CE 3D capable box) and the problems with 3D ended, This has been my experience.

Hi @Xenothar , the sample worked but I had to whitelists all 3D mode i.e sbs tab etc.

However I think the depths is still lacking so hopefully @Portisch can incorporate the mode 14

The MVC 3D problem on am6b+ with log file. Optoma HD29Darbee projector and Denon avr-x2600h. I played the 3D Subs in 3D ISO Sample.iso. I don’t know what could be the problem if not for everyone, but I would be happy to be able to use it as a well working 3D player. I set the am6b+ settings based on this
