Your issue will be related to:
Your Android video firmware is below 4.1.
So you need to update Android and hope it firmware and bootloader is updated as well.
We can not use newest firmware to support all media when the the bootloader does not support it.
To eliminate anything funky in my system, I re-did a fresh install on a uSD card but did not restore any setting. Just tried to play the file directly from USB drive. Same result with black screen and just sound. Is there any other diagnostic information I can provide, other than providing the actual hardware device. Should I maybe just bite the bullet and get another player?

I also rebooted back into the Android system and the information there says the firmware is Jan 2023, Android 11 (but this can be deceptive) and kernel is 5.4.125

In build 20250321 nothing network related things has been changed. Which can I assume it is somethimgh on your end. Like bad cable if you have 100mbits speed even over ethernet.
Here I updated TOX3 to the latest possible version from the end of 2024, it came out of “3.25” for Android ucode version: ‘3.49’.

Just updating the topic. I saw that there were some corrections.
Maybe someone with latest slimbox in devices like Ugoos X4 or some other can check the ucode version. it’s a longshot but it’s worth a try.
