CoreELEC with S928X has some teething issues, it might take some time until it’s actually usable. Hardware decoding of AV1 content is probably the biggest thing it offers over the S922X boxes. I have no problems with non-existing FEL support as I mostly use material from my media library where such content will be DoViBaked to Profile 8 anyway.
It’s a bit hard to keep track of what the current list of issues is - is this correct:
Passthrough of TrueHD and DTS-HD MA does not work
Multichannel PCM audio is not working, only 2.0-channel output setup works
DoVi profile 7 FEL support (possibly never achieved)
AV1 HW decoding hangs with “the HBO noise logo”
There’s those different DoVi things going on in the side as separate branches so it’s easy to get confused…
Is this something that could change if DoVi becomes possible with kernel 5.15?
The clips (Deadwood S01) I’ve tested still hang. There’s nothing really special about the encodes, SVT-AV1 (psy mod) stuff. However, I did another encode without any concatenating involved and it worked. I’ll need to test if the chunked encoding method causes this.
EDIT: and are any of those side tracks I mentioned planned to be merged to mainline? Or does the team consider them too experimental for that?
This is a debug log from my first test where the hang occurred if you are interested in having a look.
I want to try out more demanding skins. I have addons that pull 1000’s of entries from trakt. I wouldn’t mind having a true upgrade. I think I need more single threaded performance.
All passthrough should work, it’s just bitstreaming the file over HDMI to your receiver. But if you have a multichannel LPCM track, or anything like FLAC, AAC or Opus, as of now it is only possible to get 2-channel output.
wow that’s a massive deal breaker. if this can’t be fixed then this SOC is not going to be adopted mainstream I don’t think. might as well stick with s922x
What I don’t understand is how Dune HD can safely say their product the Dune HD Solo 8K, which is using the same S928X J/K processor can decode Dolby profile 7 FEL and MEL for iso, mkv etc, yet our devices such as the Ugoos AM8 etc cannot decode FEL?? What are we lacking here??
I guess it doesn’t really matter to me anyway now I’m jumping ship from the AM8 Pro and getting AM6b Plus. One step forward then I’m taking two steps back lol
The media player supports direct playback of Dolby Vision profile 7 FEL double-track and double-layer files. This is the most advanced Dolby Vision format. The media player plays video in this format using both tracks/layers. The important Dolby Vision information from the second track/layer (Dolby Vision RPU metadata) is transmitted to TV together with video data from the first track/layer. The passed video data uses 10-bit color depth - the maximum color depth supported by OLED-panels in OLED TVs, i.e. this fully uses the capabilities of OLED TVs. Combined with the full use of Dolby Vision metadata this gives an excellent Dolby Vision picture on the TV screen.
Looks like some “interesting” wording - note the lack of video data usage from the second track/layer, only taking the RPU.
It would be 12-bit color depth when correctly composing the final video from the first and second track video data.
