Amlogic S928X

So what happened chronologically exactly on your end?

For me, after the text on command line the dune reboot and goes back to dune hd. I see no CoreELEC logo loading screen and this happens very fast, so much that I barely had time to check the picture of the command line.

You also talked about a power cycle needed on the box. Can you tell me step by step what you do, especially when you do the power cycles?

Here’s what I do:

Preparing Installation Drive

  1. Connect the USB Storage to your PC and open Balena Etcher
  2. Select the CoreELEC’s image file (eg. CoreELEC-Amlogic-ne.aarch64-21.2-Omega_nightly_20250406-Generic.img.gz)
  3. Select the USB Storage that you want to use, proceed with the installation and make sure that it will complete successfully
  4. Open the COREELEC partition, navigate to the “device_trees” folder
  5. Copy the s5_s928x_ugoos_sk1_8g.dtb file to the root of your COREELEC flash drive and rename it to dtb.img
  6. Copy dovi.ko to the root of your COREELEC flash drive
  7. Safely remove the USB drive from your PC

CoreELEC Installation

  1. Under Android settings, select “Enable developers options”, “OEM unlocking” and enable “USB debugging”.
  2. Install the Reboot to CoreELEC APK.
  3. Insert the CoreELEC USB drive in a USB port on your device.
  4. Launch Reboot to CoreELEC APK and choose “First boot”.
** HERE I SEE THE COMMAND-LINE FOR SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND THEN REBOOTS TO DUNE OS. NO CORELEC LOGO SCREEN **
  5. At this point, if everything went well, CoreELEC should be up and running, so just proceed with the initial setup.

What size of USB are you using? How is the USB stick formatted? Format it to FAT 32…

The first action in CE installation is partitioning USB drive to two partitions; first partition is left as FAT 512 MB (done by Etcher) and the rest is Linux formatted (not seen under Windows). After this CE installation automatically reboots in 5 sec to start CE. Maybe at this point, as @clarkss12 suggested, you should power cycle the box…

If possible, use 32 GB USB stick, and check that your “dtb.img” is not renamed to something like dtb.img.txt. I don’t have an S928X box, but that is what I always do with other boxes. Also I don’t think that “dovi.ko” is needed for first installation

I tried with 500gb samsung t5 ssd, another sata in external enclosure samsung 500gb ssd and 128gb lexar usb key.

I delete all partitions before using baletaetcher and it creates 512mb coreelec and 32mb empty ext4 partition.

dtb.img is ok and correctly named.

I saw the partitions because i have partition master and i saw second ext4 is only 32mb uand theres a resize me.txt in there but I dont think resizing the partition to a bigger size is needed at installation? On my last try I tried to resize partition with partition master but it failed for some reason.

@clarkss12 , when exactly do i need to power cycle in these steps?

Sample short video

Hi I haven’t been on forum for awhile is there support for SK1 coreelec NO

yes there is support

I made a video about how to create the bootable flash drive. If you still need help, I will make a video on how to install CoreELEC onto this media player.

@clarkss12 thank you for this awesome video like usual!

That is exactly what I do, except I don’t format to NTFS I just leave the partitions deleted and the drive still shows in balenaEtcher when I flash it and I don’t copy any remote files for now since i only have one UR01 for my am6b+ for now. But these two steps are optional to my comprehension right?

My Dune HD firmware is the latest 250205_2220_r22. It may be the reason mine won’t work if you don’t have the same one. Please check which one is installed on yours, you can see it somewhere in the Dune OS menus.

Yes, I would like to see a video of all the steps when you install CoreELEC on the device please without any cuts as that is the part that doesn’t work the same for us.

Be sure to show the power cycle part to see when and how you do that.

Thanks!

I am running 24930_2300_r22. I never updated it because I do not use this media player. But the firmware should not matter.

Here is part 2, it installed without issues, and did not have to do a power cycle. I am sure you have done the same thing, so not sure what is happening with your media player. Keep in mind, that I was previously running CE on this device, so it may have done something to the boot record.

Ok your dune logo flicks 4 times then CoreELEC appears.

For me on NG I see the text on command line then reboots to dune os and on NO I see 2 flicks of dune hd logo then it boots to dune os and no CoreELEC logo.

I am close but no cigar

Which usb port you use?

I used the USB 3 port furthest from the front of the box.

When I did the install the last time, it showed the Linux commands on the screen/TV, but not this time. Also, normally when I upgrade the firmware, I do a factory reset, but did not do it this time.

Didn’t you use the “NE” version and it installed ok??
When I did the CE install a couple of days ago, it was on the older firmware and I did the “NE” version first. I then did a complete reset on my flash drive before creating the “NO” OS.

Edit: Today, I updated the Dune HD firmware and did a complete reset on the flash drive. I then created the “NO” OS on that flash drive. That is when I made the video.

NE never installed ok, I just see that text on black screen and then no CoreELEC never appears and not working abd if i NORMAL REBOOT afterwards still no CoreELEC.

I did try NE 21.2 nightly first multiple times and saw the text but no coreelec logo

Then I tried NO 22 nightly and I saw the two flicks of the dune hd logo but no coreelec and back to dune hd

Then I tried NE stable 21.2 release and I saw one flick only of the dune hd logo (no text) if I remember correctly but no coreelec and back to dune hd

Then NE 21.2 nightly again and saw the text same as first time and no CoreELEC.

I can try NO again on port farthest from the front of device as I used the other one in most of my tests.

Why don’t you do a factory reset on your Dune Media player. Start from scratch.
That would be what I would do.

I did factory reset and tried CE NO and still not installing. I guess it’s not meant to be. Thanks for the help though!

Check the name of the dtb.img file. Sometimes there are errors when renaming dtb.
You can use this file if you like.

Did you try with a 32GB USB stick? To big USB drive is an issue on MANY boxes.
@clarkss12, which USB size do you use on your box?

He used 128gb flash drive in his video and I also used that.

USB stick != USB stick even if same size.
