Best device for Coreelec in 2022/2023

De-interlacing was better on x32/64, but the video acceleration was a bit of a luck. CEC was a big headache. Heavy skins loaded properly but it depends on the dev who made that skin.
At least, that was the old info I have about Kodi on Windows or mini pcs.
Maybe things changed and you don’t have to spend a fortune on a HTTCP.

I would try this fanless option for a media player.

Hi,
It seems that all the major drawbacks associated with x64 processors have been addressed with the new N100 series processors - and they are now nearly as good power wise as the ARM competition. Hardware decoding is on a par and you dont have to rely on the quality of the vendor kernel to get it working.
Decent enough ones start at around €200.00 which for a long term prospect is acceptable. It seems that they struggle a bit on 4K at high frequencies but thats an issue i wont have to face for a few years yet.

I like the look of these bad boys;

This thread is named “Best device for Coreelec …” which Intel devices clearly doesn’t work. So please stop such discussion or open new thread.

Even after reading thge entire thread, I’m still not sure what’s the actually the suggestion here, to buy a CE box in 2022/2023/2024. I know it’s hard to be focused on single subject with 300+ posts but looks like we went in a lot of diffrent tangents and sort of lost fouces on the matter according to the title. I have the TV and Receiver that supports all of the new ultra Hi-Def format. I reckon, if I need all of the latest featurs including DV, DA, HDR10[+], DTS:X etc. on a standalone CE box, am I right in thinking it has to be one of these?

  1. Minix NEO U22-XJ (if can be purchased)
  2. Homatics Box R 4K Plus
  3. Ugoos AM6B Plus 2021
  4. Ugoos AM7

My current box is MINIX NEO U9-H, which I’m using since 2018, without any issue but the time has come for an upgrade to run the latest CE versions.

The Ugoos AM8 Pro isn’t supported, as none of the S928X is. Everyone has its favorites , the ones you pointed have DV capability if that’s important for you.

thanks @Vasco!
What about Ugoos AM7? Is it a better option than AM6B Plus 2021, in terms of future proofing? I really like Minix product line but U22-XJ cannot be bought anymore, as it seems.

It seems to me that you can also count on the Khadas Vim 4, which I believe has a little more computing power. Very useful for maintaining fluidity on modern Skins using Windows hubs for example. However, it lacks Dolby Vision.

Good luck !

If you need use all the features vedio and sound by Coreelec OS Dune hd homatics box you will not regret that.

Yes, I just pointed out the ones supporting DV. If that’s not important vim4 is a very good choice, powerful and with full audio support now!

I surrendered my life to the hands of Harmony Hub a long time ago and it’s very hard for me now to get out of it; so a working Harmony remote is another MUST for me. Based on my research and info from here, my best options seem to be:

  1. Dune HD Homatics Box R
Doesn’t have this particuler device in the database but reported to be working with this settings:
    Manufacturer: ONN
    Model: 100026240

  2. Ugoos AM6
This one is in the DB, so probably AM7 will work too

What is generally favorable for CE - a S922X or S905x4 based device, for features and future proofing?
I found this online: Amlogic S922X vs Amlogic S905X4

Any of the s905x varients are core limited so they will choke when the going gets tough. Kodi is getting to be very resource intensive in terms with of CPU usage so you are boxing yourself in with these boxes. S922x should be the lowest you are looking at in my humble opinion.

I agree with this. Went from a Dune HD Homatics and an AM6B+, UI speed and stability was quite noticeably better (running Fentastic here). Also far less hangups and crashes while navigating. As of the latest 20.5 build it got even better. The support and work being done on DV is also a pretty big plus.

Dune HD Homatics Box R is out of stock pretty much everywhere in UK but found one not-used, opened-box in eBay and bought it this afternoon. I’ll see if I get a reasonably priced MINIX U22-J Max or Ugoos AM6B+ to buy.

Can either of those boxes be booted into CE from SD card?

Dont know about minix, but am6b+ can boot to pre installed ce in internal memory (you have to download and flash firmware 0.5.4 from ugoos website first) .

Thank you for doing the research. I’m itching to get my hands on a DV capable hardware for CE

wait e few days more… the developers and some testers are onto something… it seems like the Ugoos AM6B plus could be a near perfect device if they get it working.

Right now they try to get dv fel with cm4.0 support and true tv-led working. It is still early, but may be worth to wait a few days more…

That should be applied to Minix U22-XJ as well, I suppose, as it has the very same CPU as AM6B and very similarly specd?

What makes it the near perfect device Sunset ?

Edit : doing a little research I see that the SoC is not the same indeed.
The Ugoos Am6b plus has a S922X, whereas the Dune HD Homatics Box R has a S905X4.
Even though the S922X in a little older, it seems to be much more powerful indeed .
But from what I understand the Ugoos Am6b plus also has a microSD slot that can be used to boot CE from , that leaves the USB3 port available

Edit2 : just saw keunhuvac’s post just above, the internal memory can possibly be used, even better as I guess it can only be faster that microSD

Edit3 : I might be wrong, Ugoos Am6b plus has a S922X-J not a S922X

it makes it perfect because it is the only device with kodi (CE) that can play all sound formats with passtrough and dv mkv with fel, real tv led and support for dv cm4.0
