Best device for Coreelec in 2025

Hi guys, just wondering about the current state of CE, particularly on the Khadas VIM3 and VIM4? My main concern is Dolby Vision as it is one of my requirements. I’m looking to purchase a VIM4 possibly but only if Dovi is possible. Any other suggestions for a future proof high powered device with Android TV possibilities are also welcome. Thanks.

None of it support DV.
Most future proved SoC is SC2, S905X4 and up:

@ imas “Are these cheaper devices. Tox3 and vontar x4 good enough for 4K remux videos? Even high bitrate and fps ones like Gemini man 4K”

Works well Played a remux version, no issues I could find.
I did have a network error that stuffed up play but circumvented that and this and other files I tried play with no issues I could see.

you could ask **ht2tweak

He’s got a video 2 days ago about the HK1 which seems to be the clone of vontar x4, and tried MPEG-2 and VC1, lots of frame drops

ht2tweak might be able to do the testing for HK1 if you ask him, he’s safe

No need to advertise users with own opinion for his own needs. This thread is about “best” device for CoreELEC, not for personal needs best fit.

BTW his videos aren’t fully correct and not always up to date…
As said, it’s a personal point of view, not about device with what system works best.

my mistake, I’ll try to keep on point.

I’m getting the HK1 RBOX X4 soon. Gonna give it a go so I could start degoogling my life. I don’t care for DV or FEL since both my TVs can’t play it anyways. HDR is fine for me so let’s see how it goes via singleboot

EDIT: Loving it thus far

4 posts were split to a new topic: CPU Benchmark Addon

I’m looking to replace my current S912.arm box as its a bit aged. It runs fine but the library stopped working long ago and has some audio issues as its running an old kodi version. I see no point in trying to update the OS as the support is not there anymore.

Current:
NOTICE: Starting Kodi (18.0-ALPHA1 Git:f621a02). Platform: Linux ARM 32-bit
NOTICE: Using Release Kodi x32 build
NOTICE: Kodi compiled Feb 13 2018 by GCC 7.3.0 for Linux ARM 32-bit version 3.14.29 (200221)
NOTICE: Running on LibreELEC (community): 8.90.4 (9.0), kernel: Linux ARM 64-bit version 3.14.29 aarch64
NOTICE: FFmpeg version/source: 3.4.1-Kodi

Need:

  • Cheap box whether its android or whatever, I’m talking under 50eur cheap
  • Plays from local samba share via gigabit ethernet, no reencoding needed
  • Plays 4k HDR with all audio including Atmos/DTS:X passed to receiver
  • Plays eac3 and ac3 codec which current box has some issues with for some reason (drops, out-of-sync), newer Kodi/ffmpeg version will probably fix this.
  • Somewhat future-proof even though my 4K TV is only HDR, I imagine next one will have HDR10 and DV but I know DV is not easy with cheap boxes so its not a deal breaker.
  • Video sources are mostly high-ish 30-40 Mbit/s bitrate x264/x265 4K HDR encodes with Atmos/DTS:X audio. Don’t care for blurays/remuxes, theyre too big. If my curent ancient box can handle this, I imagine anything thats newer can as well.
  • Don’t need streaming app support as this is handled by the TV itself, need pure Kodi

any suggestions?

Vontar X4

37.77 euros, sale starts in 5 hours in UK. you should get it for 35 euros after the coupons you can apply.

It’ll do pretty much everything except DV

best value box for the performance and features, install CoreELEC on EMMC, it will be pretty blistering
this is a list of boxes with single core python speed measurement

I would love it if you ran the test and gave me some me the result on your S912 hardware, you can find the “CPU BENCHMARK addon” in official kodi repo. install and run and you’ll see a url with the results

more details here

the next best is the TOX3, but they pretty identical and like 8 euros cheaper for the Vontar

Thanks a lot looks like I asked at just the right time, just grabbed the Vontar X4 for €36.91 shipped, thats an easy decision at that price, will replace my S912 quite nicely until I need something beefier with DV, and by then DV will probably trickle down to lower priced devices.

I’ll try and get the benchmark done but my Kodi install is really outdated and busted up, not sure I can even install from the kodi repo but I’ll try

EDIT: for the benchmark unfortunately I don’t think it will be possible, tried installing the addon and got “ERROR: CAddonInstallJob[script.pystone.benchmark]: The dependency on script.module.kodi-six version 0.1.3.1 could not be satisfied.” then tried installing kodi-six and got “ERROR: CAddonInstallJob[script.module.kodi-six]: The dependency on xbmc.python version 3.0.0 could not be satisfied.”

seems I need python3 on the box which I don’t have as the box is ancient running old kodi and LibreElec

hanks bud for trying. good price on the Vontar X4, once you get it , install CoreELEC on the EMMC

before you do ask for advice since you can brick your device, I’d love the score for the Vontar X4 if you had the time later. thankd

I just noticed the 128GB version is cheaper than the 64 GB

I read this before

Best device for Coreelec in 2025 - #646 by confused

“vontar x4 for 36yuros from ali…stunning value!!
superfast, can write to emmc, certainly with the 32gig model, did read issues with the 64gig one
what are you getting extra out of a ‘bargain for 182 dollars SK1’ as mentioned above??”

sorry I just didn’t think they will have the 128GB cheaper model
can you cancel and buy the 64GB model to make sure?

@ usbhdmi

On this listing the 32GB is cheaper

I wonder if it’s a listing mistake and you’ll get the 32GB model

but I’d make sure from what @confused said

That link cannot ship to my address. I got it from VONTAR X4 Amlogic S905X4 Smart TV Box Android 11 4GB 128G 32GB 64GB Wifi BT AV1 Media Player TVBOX 4K 1000M Set-Top-Box - AliExpress 44

will score it for sure once it arrives and I set things up

@ usbhdmi
which version did you get?
4 64
4 32
4 128

someone mentioned the 4 64 has issues with and he said to get 4 32

normally 4 32 is cheaper but on the listing you bought, the 4 64 is cheaper.
I’ll make sure to buy the 4 32, in case what the member here said is correct and 4 64 has issues.

check your bought items and see what version you got. you could ask the seller why is the 4 64 cheaper and if it’s a mistake and which version will ship

I got the 4G32G, its the one I wanted to get, there is a slight price difference but I don’t see the point of 64 anyway for a pure KODI box, don’t need Android or dual-boot

Thanks for the Benchmark Sheet! The S922X devices with it’s A73 cores (N2+, AM6B+) really running circles around the 905X5 devices. It was to be expected, as the 922 contains big and little cores, while the 905 is build with little cores only, even thought it has the newer cores.

So the “somewhat faster” from the first post is a bit misleading. When I replaced my N2+ with a Homatics R 4K Plus I felt a big performance degradation. But I thought, it was due to the EMMC vs USB. But now I think it’s more likely that it’s the CPU itself.

I’m having odd issues and was going to replace the hardware to make sure that’s not it. I was going to just get another C4, but is there something better in the same or smaller form factor?

Libre Computer Alta is the same form factor but with a more powerful CPU (A311D).
