S922x like S905x2-x4 has not very good upscaling algorithm, it is inferior to fire tv stick 4k 2018, apple tv to 2022, shield tv pro 2019 players. The amlogic makes a slightly less sharp image.
LG Cx, C1, G1 have about the same upscale quality as amlogic, a bit better even if you put the sharpness at +10, but you can also raise it to +15+20, then it will be even sharper. G2 should have a better upscale algorithm.
I did an analysis of the upscale quality of the players in these videos.
Zidoo z9x pro, fire tv cube 3rd and S928x players can produce even slightly better quality than fire tv stick 4k 2018, apple tv to 2022, shield tv pro 2019.
That’s if you compare the clarity of the Y brightness channel.
As for CrCb color channel clarity, LG converts all incoming 1080p video to 420. And then makes 4k 444 out of it again, so in this LG TVs are inferior to the rest of the TVs, even the latest C3-G3.
Therefore, in general, either make upscale by am6b to 4k, but on the TV slightly increase the parameter sharpness, or output from the player am6b 1080p for all video 480-1080, and upscale to 4k is made by LG tv. But we lose a little bit of color clarity.
So am6b is not the best option for upscaling to 4k.
Maybe the reason I prefer AM6b+ upscaling is because I have sharpness a little higher on my G2 (at 25 vs 20).
G2 upscale on 1080p is okay I think. Very noisy, but not grain. Probably closer to G1 then G3. Need to have DNR on TV set on low to make it more watchable.
For AM6b+ upscale, just need sharpening on TV but DNR not needed.
going to installl kodi this weekend on the minix and wanted to know which type of device is better to install to, internal, MircoSD, usb strick or External SSD ?
or does it not matter
also once installed will it boot kodi stright away not into any operation system
as the first does not say anything about the Dolby vision files but the 2nd link does but it has somthing about installing PlexMod4Kodi which i am not interested as i just want kodi as not sure what that is for if needed, seems to be a few different guides but not sure which one is the better to use
what you mean by faster player what world be faster? why do the guides say use external, also would an external SSD drive not be just as fast since these are usb 3 devices and people saying something about dual boot . would i not lose the in built operating system
This tool does require command line access to run, so there’s a bit of a technical hurdle for some, but it’s overall straight forward. You’ll copy over the existing settings from your usb/sd card installation so is a transparent move.
While preferred for my needs, I couldn’t get single-boot install to work. Dual-boot seems just fine, though, if you run into any issues.
Another reason to hope the 928-J gets CoreElec support.
Do you have links to tests for other devices?
At the moment I’m thinking I’ll use my Ugoos AM6B+ for 4K only. And use my Intel NUC for everything else (I play a lot of hires music and still have a lot of old non-4K movies)
Kodi UI navigation through libraries (cover art and fanart etc, depending on your skin settings). This can be laggy if Kodi is not installed on the eMMC as that’s where its cached art files reside.
It’s good to know that the current default to upscale to the minimum matching resolution is the best setting for this device. As always, your testing brings evidence to speculation.
I think it’s important to remember that the S922X came out in 2017 and the S905 was originally released in 2015 with it’s variant the S905x4 in 2019. These are fairly ancient processors. The only reason they’re generating so much excitement is their support for the holy trinity of CMv4, FEL, and display led DoVi. If you’re looking for the latest and greatest in upscaling, they’re too old.
Does anyone know if the chroma upsampling in coreelec devices is configurable?
From a quick search in the code, there are references to a whole bunch of different filters (various bicubic, triangle, bilinear, spline, lanczos, …) in multiple places throughout the code. Are these references applicable / are these all options that we could use?
Is it really just an age thing? I’m pretty sure I’ve read @DMDreview stating that the Oppo does the best upscaling for low resolution content, like 720p.
Hi guys, am posting this here first since many of you are Ugoos AMB6b+ users / CoreELEC developers / so very knowledgeable
So ever since Omega_nightly_20240424 came out that fixed the Sony DV red/purple screen issue (thanks so much!) I have been using the Ugoos AM6b+ every night along with PM4K as my go-to player instead of the official android TV app.
And every night I have gotten intermittent herky/jerky video combined with audio out of sync when initially starting vids or when coming out of pause. Happened last night during the actual playing of a vid that had a particular fast action motion and right away the jerkiness again started so decided to post about it. It doesn’t matter whether the vids are 1080 or 4K, doesn’t matter whether H264/5, and doesn’t matter whether HDR or not. The audio format doesn’t matter either. The intermittent herky/jerky has happened to any and all vids. What I gotta do to get the audio/video back on track is to hit the back button and go back 10secs then it plays normal again. I can’t be the only one with this problem or has noticed this, right?
So what I noticed is that with the official android TV Plex app that I have installed on my Sony TV the video never starts playing right away when hitting play or coming out of pause or when seeking back or forward. There is always a slight delay (one second or so) until the video resumes as if the video is waiting for the audio to “catch up”. (And perhaps this is why I have never experienced the herky/jerky problem with the official Plex app.) What I noticed with PM4K (and CoreELEC) is that there is no video delay when seeking, coming out of pause etc. The video starts to play immediately then it takes a sec or two (usually two) until the audio resumes.
So am thinking that this could be the reason for the intermittent herky/jerky? That the video starting its playing without a delay and without the audio already playing (and being in sync) is why we get the herky/jerky audio/video because sometimes the audio doesn’t properly catch up with the video? Or is just because the S922X chip in the Ugoos isn’t good enough or just too slow?
Or is there a possible way to get the CoreELEC player to delay resuming the video after a play/pause/seek until the audio “catches up” same like the official Plex player does?
