Kinhank G1

Hello.

I have questions about this box whose price is unbeatable, even outside of promotions, when looking at the technical specifications (it’s even suspicious ^^).

If I order it on Amazon and receive the device with its latest update, will it be possible to make a backup of the locked bootloader to re-inject it later if necessary via the UART module?

And second question, if we replace the bootloader with the unlocked one, is it really necessary to install the custom firmware since we would have the unlocked bootloader anyway?
This would allow for future Android updates, I suppose…
So installing custom firmware is apparently irreversible and blocks future updates…
So Android TV 14 with theoretically the support for auto frame rate on Android…

Because I will be using this box at my parents’ place initially under Android TV to retrieve it later and not block access to CoreElec.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Probably, haven’t tried it…

Yes, for two reasons, it will block any updates which will lock bootloader - so no CoreElec - and since the new version already comes with new firmware which will automatically install with first powering G1 to boot Android.

Exactly, if the update has already been applied by default on the box, why install the same custom firmware on top and force the Android TV part to stay on this version?
If we can just replace the bootloader without touching the rest, why not do it?
It’s true that it doesn’t guarantee anything that the engineers will find another trick to lock the bootloader in the next update…

Anyway, if the box goes to ATV14 and the bootloader is still unlocked, CoreElec requires modifications to boot like on the Homatics, but since the team no longer supports this model, it’s dead…
And that’s a real problem…

you mean 14? there is no ATV 13  we need android TV an no Android on a box.

As I said, if Kinhank puts ATV14 on their G1, it will no longer be possible to launch CoreElec as was the case for the Homatics R 4k Plus.
I believe the developers will need to make a fix to the system, but since this box is EOL for them, it’s dead…

I hope you didn’t mean CE developers. Because this is not CE problem if device itself doesn’t allow booting any OS from USB.

Anyone have any idea where can I get the u-boot.bin.usb.bl2 (DDR.USB) file? I am stuck in BL1 mode and would like to try this method.

Unfortunately it does not work to write the bootloader to SD card. It worked before, but now it won’t boot.

@hungphutho?

I’m talking about the CoreElec update that was recently made for the Homatics R 4k Plus when only the NO version was working with ATV 14.
Update from the beginning of this week that allowed the NG version to work on the Homatics

I suppose that if one day Kinhank releases an ATV 14 update for the G1, and we manage to unlock the bootloader as we currently do with ATV 11, there would also need to be a CoreElec NG update to make it work… Which won’t happen since the CoreElec developers have stopped supporting this box.

It does not matter what happens in Android Update.

There are only 2 ways to boot CoreELEC on Kinhank

If have Box with firmware revision from older Kinhank G1
And have never clicked on update/(yes was forced as soon as connection to network)
And after success have never returned to Android

The other is j-tag
Downgrade bootloader
Flash custom hungphutho

Thats it

I have not tried to return to original with OTA that was posted.
Why would you (other than to return it i guess)

I have been pondering to try Flash Ugoos X4q
Firmware which has similar Hardware
And can use X4q DTB in CoreELEC
Now that bootloader has been downgraded

Both KinHank and SDMC would love to unlock bootloader and sell bucketloads, it’s not them who benefit from people purchasing stuff on google ecosystem. So even if SDMC are aware of the method to downgrade firmware, they might just let it be since you have to be in this forum and know where to look to do it and it’s technical. So it’s they can sell more boxes and still be compliant until google tell them to patch this also.

So I’m guessing whatever method was used to be able to downgrade ATV11 might work with ATV14 and when the update happens the original author of the exploit might update his box, try to get it working and hopefully post it, only issue is if they patched it then no CoreELEC from the firmware update lol

In fact, I would like the best of both worlds: a box with good specs (SoC S905X4, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, microSD port, HDR10/10+/DV) and low price under 100€ that has Android TV with certified apps and runs on CoreElec.
Unfortunately, the Hinhank no longer has 1Gbps Ethernet and also lacks a USB 3.0 port.
And I also have a doubt about its ability to accept Dolby TrueHD Atmos or DTS(-HD) passthrough.

Since the G1 is still on Android TV 11, there is no auto-framerate on certified apps like Netflix, while it is available on Android TV 12 and 14.
Hence the reason not to dismiss the box with the custom firmware running on Android TV 11.

Unless by then the creator of the Custom Firmware manages to do the same thing with the next version

And as I said since the manufacturer is not SEI, we’ll see if CoreElec would still work under ATV12/14 if the bootloader can be unlocked.
This was not the case with my Homatics R 4k Plus when it switched to ATV 12 then ATV 14.

It is fixed in nightly at least for CE22 NO. For CE21 NE I would need one box with tmate terminal sharing enabled.

No doubt, since it does.

Is it so difficult to set Refresh rate in Android to whatever certified apps stream at, so no need for switching?

Yes I know that’s what I said yesterday
Ok for CoreElec NO since ± 1 month and NG since the beginning of this week
But I don’t know if the corrections that were made to make CoreElec NG work on ATV14 with the Homatics R 4k Plus will be the same for the Kinhank G1 if an update is ever released and the bootloader can be unlocked…

With CoreElec I’m sure it does, but I’m talking with ATV 11. For exemple, no dts-hd on ATV11 with Homatics R 4k Plus. Ok with ATV12 and 14.

Very old app for Shield… Don’t work very good with Homatics R 4k Plus…

I made a mistake and copied something wrong to G1 so it doesn’t boot anymore but says ‘make your life colorful’ on the TV screen.
I bought a Cp2102 usb to uart on Aliexpress, installed Silicon Labs driver (11.4.0) and PuTTYPortable on my win11 computer.
The Uart is connected to G1 as in the picture (gnd, rx, tx).

After turning on G1 I tried to pause for two to six seconds before short-circuiting D0 but the PuTTY window remains black.
What could be the cause of the failure?

It’s hard to see, but I think you need to turn the uart adapter 180 degrees!
The correct connection is:
GND - GND
RX - TX
TX - RX

Question: Can this type of connector be soldered onto the motherboard of the Kinhank G1 to facilitate the use of the UART module?

Since I saw that the UART could be delivered with cables that seem to be able to plug in…

I don’t know much about it, but I have a small soldering iron for my child’s game repairs ^^

What am i doing wrong?

SD card file system must be formatted as FAT32 type
